  • Compatible with PS5 but needs a heatsink yeah?

  • Check the heatsink dimensions before you buy. The one I chose was a tight fit width wise. Sony lists the dimensions on their site.

  • How much better is it compared to Crucial P5 1tb? I mean value/performance wise.

    • +1

Much better. This is a Gen 4 drive whereas the P5 is only an Gen 3 drive which has a max read and write speed of 3400 MB/s and 3000 MB/s. And this price isn't that much more expensive than the P5 either.

  • +2

Man just want a 2TB with great random read/write speeds, below $300 ideally. Does anyone think there will be any good ones around Black Friday?

Also which drivers are the best for random read/write and mixed usage? Any recommendations?

    • +1

In same spot as you. $300 cap for 2tb Ps5.

COD takes up 200GB without the single player game installed. I have ratchet and clank 2, and nba 2k22 and I’m not installing until I get a drive. Not buying anymore games. I’ll wait until after Christmas if I have to though no rush.

Better to spend another $30 and get a much better drive like Samsung 980 pro.

    • +2

Where can you find a Samsung 980 Pro 1TB for $217?

      • I think it was $208 not too long ago.
Haven't tried if the code works but if you have eBay plus these guys are offering $50 off which brings it to $205

        • +1

I see $10 off only with PLBFSS?

    • Samsung only has claims to a 400mb/s faster read speed. That's probably not worth $30 to most people

  • Will this be a good choice for 5800x + MSI B550M PRO-VDH?
    Is heatsink also recommended?

    • +1

it comes with a heatsink and ye it would be good aslong as its your only pcie 4.0 ssd.

      • +1

Did you mean that my motherboard or the P5 Plus comes with a heatsink?

        • +2

ur motherboard, assuming u have an m.2 ssd alr, and u used the top m.2 slot, its the thing u took off the top of where u slot ur ssd into

          • @abjsdhasehasee: ahh thank you, didn't look closely enough, so no heatsink needed if I get Crucial P5 Plus.

            • +1

              @beOson: for your motherboard no

              • @abjsdhasehasee: my current pc is an ancient machine, i7-2600 + 2.5 Sata SSD and etc, I am thinking of a new AMD build 5800x + MSI B550M PRO-VDH + GTX 1060 3GB + this Crucial P5 Plus, mainly doing Photoshop, is the Crucial P5 Plus going to be too much for me?

                • +2

@beOson: for just photoshop? probably too much, although im really not into ssds and not sure if the general concensus of a pcie 3.0 tlc ssd is good enough is still true or not.

what i would recommend is go for like an a2000 for below 140, better motherboard like b550 aorus pro / v2 and then some ballistix memory <-(if you wanna oc ram well)

                  -
id recommend u ask someone else about the ssd question

                  • @abjsdhasehasee: Thanks for the recommendations!

For the motherboard, I've already changed my mind after doing some research, might go with the MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK instead! The b550 aorus pro was on the tier S list too but then it's $50 more.

I won't be doing any OC, what ram would you suggest? 16gb and 32gb options?

With the Crucial P5 Plus, I wouldn't even know that exists if the deal didn't come up to OZB tbh..and I usually tend to keep my PC for years (my current build was 10 years ago and it's still solid for its specs), so I thought it's good for future-proof + the price point makes me tempting…

                    • -1

                      @beOson: 16 gig -
                      https://www.amazon.com.au/Crucial-Ballistix-Unbuffered-PC4-1… sr rev e
                      32 gig-
https://www.amazon.com.au/Crucial-Ballistix-Unbuffered-PC4-1… < comes with single rank rev b 99.9% of the time but theres a chance you get an old kit with dual rank rev e

rev e and b oc similar (doesnt matter for you really), but dual rank rev e is simply better for the fact thats its dual rank, meaning rank interleaving, meaning higher theoretical throughput with a minuscule latency hit

                      • a 3200 c16 > 3600 c16 is literally the most simple oc you could imagine and id really recommend it rather than spending $40 more lmao
set fclk to 1800, set mclk to 3600, set vdimm to say 1.42v and stress test using tm5 for 1.5 hours. done

if your talking about the vrm tier list for the motherboard, its literally useless, all b550 vrms are totally fine for even a pbo 5950x, what you care about in mobos is ram ocing and features. i really only know about high endish boards, so i cant say whether or not the tomahawk is good or not so idrk.

and ye for 186, id say go for it

                      • @abjsdhasehasee: Went with Crucial P5 and the 32GB Ram you posted. Thanks for the advice! Really appreciated.

                • +2

@beOson: It depends. You haven't said how intensive you will do your photoshop. If you are making money from it and work with big files @ 4K then yeah, get a Gen 4 PCIe. Otherwise it's too much.

Gen 3 would already help you heaps. The thing I have with futureproofing is you can't really, my usual advice is get what you need now, with a bit of headroom, then worry about what might happens later. And with SSD, you might want to worry about the storage size more than the speed if you don't fall into the category I said above, as there is higher chance that you will max out the space before you even barely hit the speedbump.

By the time you hit either of the upgrade point, you either have newer and better technology options to choose, or have more than enough money to splurge on a great one (given that you hit out the speed due to all the projects you will be working that give you those nice kaching and you need faster to get more works done hence more kaching). Gen 4 might even be the new standard by then and have cheaper pricing.

Imo, you can save roughly $60 with some mid range Gen 3 and spend that on better motherboards/RAM, things that will speed up your performance immensely and evenly. Also, you might want to look at some good coolers as the 5800X runs hot due to its design.

                  • @Thomthomx: Yep, went with Gen3 P5, it's already more than 7 times faster than my current PC!

For motherboard have ordered the MSI B550 Tomahawk which should be slightly better than my previous pick.

Will the Dark Rock Slim be enough for 5800x without any OC?

                    • +1

@beOson: Dark rock slim might be cutting it too close, but regardless of what cooler you pick make sure you update your BIOS and play with curve optimizer to undervolt as much as you can before getting unstable, no loss in performance (my MT score on cine bench actually went higher the lower I put the voltage)

                      • @Juggernauto: Thanks. So which air cooler would you suggest? The regular Dark Rock? I mentioned they I will run everything as stock, no OC, it's just a workstation with GTX1060…so I don't think I will have the chance to even touch curve optimizer.

                        • +1

@beOson: I think it's still worth it spending maybe 10 to 30 minutes on curve optimizer as you'll be able to dramatically reduce temperature (without loss of performance) and you should be able to use the dark rock slim, as it appears you'll have light loads.

Happy to discuss with more detail with you end up going this route

Tldr; curve optimizer is set and forget (once you find stable point), totally worth it

                          • @Juggernauto: Really appreciate your suggestions!

I ended up going with Noctua NH-U14S as I thought if I am keeping my system for >7 years (like my current PC did) then why not go for something better.

Regarding curve monitor, yes, I will definitely have a look into this. Initially, I thought it was all about overclocking which I don't need but then read about 'undervolting' which matches up with your explanations above and that's what I am willing to try.

                            • +1

@beOson: Yeah sorry if I wasn't clear! You can def use curve optimizer either way (OC or UV) but with ryzen it's not worth overclocking so a lot of people realised you could actually get more benefits from UV, good luck with your build!

  • what about this one for PS5? Comes with heatsink and seems to have better read/write

It's 317 for a 1tb drive. It's generally not worth buying SSD with heatsink. It's best to buy a SSD and a 20dollar heatsink. It saves you 80-100 bucks for an extra 5min easy install.

Can you earn $80 in 5mins at your day job?

      • Ohhhh my bad, it was A$205 when I posted it
