Would You Buy a House That Someone Committed Suicide in?

I'm curious how this would affect your valuation of a home.

If I knew, no. If I was oblivious, yes

      is there some saying

If every one hears it but a tree didn't fall in the forest there was no tree.

      • +2

        Probably was a drone.

      • +6

if a tree falls in a forest, and there is no one around, does it make a sound?

        • No. Sound is the mind's interpretation of changes in air pressure stimulating the eardrum. No eardrum/mind/person to hear it = no sound.

          • +1

            @doncarajo: That’s a tautology.

          • +3

@doncarajo: The fall of the tree would produce the acoustic wave and that would propagate in the forest irrespective of an observer. So the tree "makes" or generates the vibration/acoustic wave.

People call that acoustic wave a "sound" and accepting the wave exists outside of an observer would lead to say the tree "made" the accoustic wave - aka sound.

To use a different example, we accept sharks have electroreception, despite not being able to sense electrical stimuli ourselves.

So, it could be argued that the tree "makes" the sound just like some sharks "make" electrical waveforms. We don't sense those, but they're being made by the sharks and exist irrespective of our perception.

          • @doncarajo: Whilst true, the fallacy there is that other animals (eg Snake) will hear or sense the sound/vibration…

…so yes, it makes a noise even if there is no-one (or person) there in the forest.

        • +3

If a tree falls in the forest and lands on a mime artist, does anybody care?

    • +1

What if you found out after you bought it?

      • +11

Sorry, what was that? I didn't hear you. A-anyways I have an appointment I must get to. Bye!

    • +1

Well then your answer is still no

    • +2

I once had a cat called Schrödinger.

  • +2

    • +6

I said I don't want any damn vegetables

  • No I Would Not

    • +3

why? at least you have someone/some thing to play with when you're alone and at a lockdown stage

  • +53

It wouldn't bother me if there's no trace of it anymore. I'm sure many of us have been in buildings or homes where death has occurred.

    • +13

or at least had sex on

      • +15

        on or in??

      • +18

        Lol @ on.

Are you a rooftop tiler by profession mate? :P

        • +5

Colorbond might be easier, its generally a little flatter.

          • +6

            @ATangk: Ribbed for your pleasure…

      • the body or the house??

  • +3

    haunted for sure

  • +4

    Bad juju

Would probably still buy it though.

    • +7

      Bad juju

Profit by turning it into a theme park haunted house attraction STCA. :)

    • +1

      Peak Sydney!

      • +16

Where it's haunted but even the ghost feels bad about how much you're paying.

        • +3

Or the ghost heckles you for eternity about it:

"I paid 5000 pounds for this… Who in their right mind would play 1.5 million for it???”

  • +51

    What matters is asking price.

    • imagine how they advertise these days: guaranteed at least one tenant occupied, very good return on investment

      • +4

looks like jv's looking to sell lol

  • +1

    Knockdown and rebuild, problem solved.

    • +26

Ghosts stay with the land, not the building.

      • +13

You are thinking of indian burial grounds…

      • +34

Ghosts have to be real for that to happen.

        • +11

          Shun the non believer.

        • you don't have to see Ghost to believe in them, you will have nightmares in sleep.

          • @No ONE: Can't see what isn't there.

        • +1

Considering the billions of "people" that has died over hundreds and thousands of years. Excluding the Neanderthals and their ancestors. There are pretty much ghosts at every single corner of the planet.

If you believe in spirits and other beings you're taking up to the googleplex of beings out there.

          So… No I don't believe in ghosts.

        • 28 people with no sense of humour, sad.

      • Are they included in the price though?

        • If you are a shrewd negotiator you can get them included.

      • Like that movie poltergeist (sorry for the spoiler)

  • +4

    Poll?

    • +3

      A poll has been added.

    • +30

      …Tergeist?

  • +11

    Suicide - meh!
    Murder - no fanks

    • +1

Someone told me if die of old age, it actually brings good luck to the newcomers.

      • +4

        That makes sense. Cheers

      • +28

Did real estate agent tell you?

      • As in inheritance? 😅

    • +6

      what about a murder suicide?

  • If cheap and no signs of "it" then okay.

    • +30

Those chalk outlines are easily vacuumed up.

      • And what about the red stains between or near or next to the chalk?

  • +9

Not even a consideration; there have almost certainly been lots of 'activities' in the property that I wouldn't be happy being there at the time, but after it is finished, no problem.

I did work for a couple of years in an office where someone had suicided. No problems there either.
And I regularly went to a food court where someone had previously suicided.

    • +5

There have been roughly 2000 generations of Aboriginal people in Australia (4 generations a century at 500 centuries), at an average population of roughly a million. So there are somewhere around 2 billion Aboriginal burial sites in this country - pretty well anywhere you live you will be living over them.

So I don't know why you'd think a more recent death should put you off a house.

      • +2

at an average population of roughly a million

This is where you went wrong.

      • +1

Assuming an even spread of burials across Australia, that means an average of one ghost per every 3.8m^2
Using an average step distance of 30" and daily tally of 10,000 steps, we will on average tread over 3,887 burial sites each day.

        TIL Australia is very spooky.

        • +4

          Your math is way off.

Australia land area is 7.692 million km², which is 7.692 trillion m².

My sister was negotiating to buy a house in Sydney - her mother in law found out through a google search that there had been a homicide in it. The realestate agent said that it just had hit 5 years so didn't have to notify anyone when selling. If you google the address it comes up though. The estate agent wouldn't lower the price either - they wanted full market value. Surely if when you put your address into google and it comes up brutal homicide you would be in for some sort of discount :\

    • +1

      Did it sell?

      • +16

Sydney market - yep, at full asking price.

        • +92

Sounds like with the current Sydney housing demand..

          (takes off sunglasses)

          .. they made a killing.

          (C.S.I. Miami 'Yeah!!!' sting)

        • -4

Sydney market - yep, at full asking price.

          Bikies bought it.

        • +4

          yep, at full asking price

How do you know full asking rice was full market price, below or above?

It sold at whatever price the highest buyer was willing to pay.

          • +1

@ihbh: Should have said asking price - however at the time of sale it was also at the high end of valuations of similar houses in the area.

          • -2

            @ihbh:

            full asking rice

            Bit racist isn't it?!!

        • +5

Knowing Sydney it will be an investment property and the owner will never step foot inside.

        • And then the sydney tax. Sold 20% over asking

        • Should have brought someone to stand at the auction with a sign

        • Well, they already killed the bloke, might as well buy the house

I mean, when else do properties in super desirable areas come up!

      • I wouldn't buy it even at a discount. Don't know where my price would be though.

    • +8

What law states a discount is required for a homocide?

      • +4

        Don't get any ideas…

      • What law states there is only a five year disclosure obligation?

        • +1

NSW Fair Trading I think established it due to the Sef Gonzales house (which started the disclosure laws)

          • -1

@niffy: Hum… my understanding is that there was a duty to disclose material facts including such things as murders - but I'm not sure about the basis of the 'five years' as the limit…

        • +15

In NSW, the Property and Stock Agents Regulation 2014

54(1)(d): "within the last 5 years the property was the scene of a crime of murder or manslaughter"

          • @ak47wong: Imagine buying a house and the detectives suddenly show up 7 years later to search under your balcony and dig up all the shrubbery in the area looking for traces of remains of a missing child.
