Been a while since we've seen a good price below $30 on Castrol Edge :)

As always, enjoy :)

Still have 6 but it's time to buy more!

    • +1

Only just got through my 30L from years ago at $23 a pop. Need 5W30 though.

      • 5w-30 / 10w-30. The difference is negligible unless you live somewhere that get really cold.

  • is 10w-30 typically more exp. than 5w-30 ?

    or the other way round

    • +4

Generally the bigger the gap between the two numbers, the more expensive

      • If the gap is smaller does it mean it's better for summer?

        • +3

Have a quick google of 'what is oil weight' and also your car model and the recommended oil for it.

        • +1

No, probably worse. Its cold start up pumpability and heat wave thrashing, thats the two extremes. For heat wave thrashing you want a high number so its not too thin. 10w 30 is mostly for low km cars and gives good fuel economy.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Wouldn't 5w-30 be better since the oil will be thinner when engine cold and easier to pump around?

Haven't seen many new cars needing 10w-30, usually 5w-30.

            • @placard: According to my Hyundai 5w-30 is good for temps around -20c to 40c from memory.

If you regularly need 40c+ then the recommendation was 10w-40

              • @4foxache: Probably good for people living in Dubai, but in Australia 5w-30 is more suitable.

  • Didn't know SCA price match?

    • +1

      Ok

    • i've price matched before in sca

      • what the process to get SCA to match this deal?

        • i asked if they price matched, and said the price on repco's online catalogue. the guy looked up on his register and said no problems.

          • +1

@neverlate: good to know your experience sounded rather painless. my only other experiences of price matching/beating were with officeworks and it was like being interrogated by centrelink.

          • @neverlate: Thanks

        • I doubt they'll Price Match. The last time this was posted on Ozbargain, I tried price matching directly through their Customer Service Team (not in store) and they refused - blah blah in store only for the Autobarn deal so we don't price match.

  • They price beat

  • +1

    OOS - all sold out

    • +1

Looks like they removed the option to C&C (which they usually do for these price drops), but the prices will be available in store.

    • 'in store only' the catalogue says

  • In Toyota / Lexus 4-6 cyl engines, this oil burns. You have to constantly top it off. It seems thinner than the specification. Genuine oil fixed the oil consumption issue and reading about it online, I was not the only one. There are Toyota engines that just don't like 3rd party oils no matter how expensive and full of new 'oil tech' they are. Just a bog standard Toyota oil may not be the most economical price wise or the most 'performance enhancing' oil but outlasts all 3rd party oils as they are over engineered for morons like me who over extend car service intervals and also designed with known limitations of their engines.

    • How much is genuine Toyota motor oil these days? 10w-30, 5w-30, 10w-40 etc

Might need to switch to Toyota branded oil since my daily driver is consuming oil at a fast rate.

    • Are you sure your car specifies A5/B5 oil? If not that's probably why its burning

    • +3

There is no such thing as Toyota oil, it’s either Idemitsu, Castrol or Mobil with a Toyota label stuck on the front. Toyota do not make engine oil.

Check out bobistheoilguy.com, many people have done oil analysis and confirmed Toyota brand is no better/different from the decent mainstream brands.

There are a few Toyota engines that are known oil burners due to bad piston ring and piston drain hole design, eg 2AZ-FE and 2ZR-FXE.

Also, the ‘overextending service intervals’ thing is a big contributor to this problem. Lesson is as always - change your oil on time with decent quality/correct spec oil and you’ll be fine, regardless of the brand on the jug.

      • +1

First time knowing about Idemitsu oil manufacturer brand. I know about Castrol aka British Petroleum and Mobil, shell etc.

bobistheoilguy frequently comes up google search engine+ motor + oil keywords.

I should probably now go for 10W-30 or even 15W-40 dino oil or semi-synthetic for my high mileage 4 banger 2az-fe engine.
Yet to reach 150K miles. Currently at 148500 miles to date.

        • Yeah it’s funny, they are massive but basically unheard of in the West. If you buy a car made in Japan, it will be factory filled with Idemitsu oil and other lubricants.

So you have the infamous 2AZ engine aye? Yeah there’s not much you can do other than go to a thicker oil. Your engine has piston oil drain holes that are too small and too few, they get blocked with oil sludge and the oil that the piston rings would normally scrape off the cylinder walls cannot drain back into the sump through those holes, the oil gets burnt inside the cylinder instead.

The 2ZR in my Prius has the same design flaw, but I’ve managed to avoid it with meticulous and frequent oil changes. For you, going to a thicker oil should help, any brand will do, the cheaper the better since you will be using a fair bit.

    • using a 1mzfe, and the most people don't have issues with 5w 30 and some in the US use 0w 20. would check the oil spec, or for a vvti issue. also a possibility of sludge and changing the oil has helped it. Newer Toyota model's spec is 0w 20.

      • I wouldn’t use 0W-20 in a 1MZ-FE, too thin. I put nearly 300,000km on one and exclusively used synthetic 5W-30 from various brands (Nulon, Castrol, Penrite, Gulf Western, even the Supercheap Auto home brand). Sold it with 350,000km and it was in perfect condition - I replaced the infamous leaky valve cover gaskets just before I sold it and the valvetrain was a pale gold colour, looked like new.

You have to remember that engine was first released in 1995, widespread use of XW-20 didn’t happen till well after that, and it was never specified for that engine. 5W-30 FTW.

        • +1

yep, those people were in the states (eg below freezing temps). Think it may have been the '02 model as well. going to change to 5w 30 myself.

          • @Cave Fire: That's right, Australia has a generally temperate climate, 5W-30 is a great all around viscosity for many engines used here.

  • Can this be used in place of 10w40?

  • if you subscribe to supercheap auto spam, you'll find these go for $20 per 5L bottle every time they have one of those "store re-opening" specials. you can get 2 bottles at a time.

  • No longer available

    • In store only…

      • Cheers

  • After a 5w-40 or a 10w-40 full synth. Hopefully one comes on sale soon!

    • Current catalogue ends on Sunday..

So guess they're gonna release the Christmas one then.. hopefully some nice goodies :)
