Long Term Parking near Train Station (to Catch Train to Sydney Airport)

Hello, I hope this is the right forum to pose this question 😀.

I am planning an overseas trip with my family for approximately a month. We live in upper North Shore, Sydney. The cunning plan is to drive to the international airport, drop my missus, baby, pram and luggage than drive off to a close by train station and catch a train to the airport with my toddler.

The question is, does anyone know specific street/road not far from a train station on the airport line where parking is not time limited ?

Cheers !

Disclaimer;

  • We don’t have any immediate family in Oz and have a feeling that would be a big favour to ask from friends.
  • Going on train all the way was already incredibly hard with one kid and the luggage (changing trains).
  • I am aware of council policy about long parking and I am ready to take the risk of being towed.
  • Probably, a true OzBargainer would park around Wollie Creek train station and walk but with a toddler it is a bit hard.

  • As your asking:- https://transportnsw.info/stop?q=coord:4880798:3763344:GDAV:…

Lots of street parking around this stop and then the 420 bus. Personally I wouldn't do it but your car, you're call.

Spending large moolah to go overseas for a month and try to cut cost on taxi/parking. Come on man, your priorities are in the wrong place.

    • -1

You forget OP is transporting four people with two trips each. Eight shuttle fares will be dearer than two taxi fares. And the taxi will be door to door too.

  • +2

Taxis are required by law to provide car seats for children, U just have to mention it when U book a taxi. . If U can afford to travel, U can afford that little bit extra on a taxi to get to the airport!

    • +2

Yep, and for four people it will be cheaper than the alternatives.

  • +5

I live in an apartment and no car space for me so I park near a train station on a street. Left it there for a week and thieves broke into it.
Your cunning plan is really stupid. You'll lose more money then what you're trying to save. Don't be so short sighted.

    • Great answer and an indictment on overdevelopment/town planning.

      • +1

The (over)development decisions are 99% made by elected officials, in this instance local Councillors. Very, very rarely is authority delegated to an officer, other than minor alterations and additions, or assessing complying development, which they have no say over any way.

Regardless of what the highly trained, impartial, Council officers recommend, regarding appropriate land uses, development densities, parking rates etc.. it all comes down to a Council vote that rarely considers the expert advice and is generally voted on down party lines, political donations, representing local constituents/vocal minority vs the needs of the large community, or on what decision may see them re-elected for the next term.

        Elected officials ≠ town planners.

        • Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, information about who voted for what is hard to find. I guess people just make a decision if they like the direction of the area every 4 years. I think that voting in LGA elections definitely should not be compulsory. Most of my councillors don’t have Facebook pages or websites, so I don’t know what they’re doing.

And that’s not to say town planners are totally immune from criticism.

  • In Perth you can park at the airport for 99 days for $99. I guess that deal will go away when we are allowed to fly anywhere besides Tasmania again.

  • Park at the airport. Long term parking works out to be app 20 a day

  • You are going to worry about your car for 30 days if you do that…

If you're super adverse to taking your family on the train with your luggage, drop them there early, give the missus $20 bux to spend on a coffee and a muffin, drive home, catch the train to the city then transfer to the bus and catch the bus to the airport.

total time requirement? hours, it's huge, but it'll only cost you $30, be worry-free and give you that last bit of peace and quiet from the family before you travel.

    • too long wait mate.

Craziest part of this thread is that your from Upper NorthShore and you're looking to skimp out on $70 for a shuttle at the risk of big $$$ for towing, damage, tyres and the stress associated with it while also inconveniencing someone else's parking spot infront of their house.

How can you afford an international family trip (ridiculoussss prices for tickets right now) for over a month but want to cheapout on the transport there?

Even if you do park in a neighbouring suburb, when you arrive back with your family you still have to do the trek yourself to go and get the car while leaving your family back at the airport. Seems super stressful for the family especially the baby and toddler after a long flight just to save such a small expense in light of a huge family vacation budget.

this is ozbargain! penny wise and pound foolish

    • +1

OP sounds like the type that would pass up travel insurance to save a few bucks

  • +1

if you must do this then park near tempe station or around brighton after dropping everyone else off at the airport and just get an uber in by yourself. It wont cost much more than the train to the airport anyway. But like most have pointed out its a lot of hassle and inconvenience to save a few $$

  • This thread is ridiculous. Surely has to be a troll post. Imagine being this cheap even as a member of OzBargain.

    • -3

Probably, I hoped that people would squeeze with ideas even more $$$. Sadly not, might find better support on Qantas Frequent Flyer forum, because apparently, on Ozbargain people are too posh and touchy.

      • +9

You know if an idea to save money is ridiculed on ozbargain which is full of tight arses who would inconvenience themselves to save a buck, it's a shit idea.

          • @bipsich: It's not….Ozdumping, people use the parking in and around eastern Sydney and the surrounding suburbs.

You are the reason car abandonment laws exist, you'll literally be in another country. You have the keys and…if you can't trust someone to drop you at the airport it's not like you'll be leaving a set of keys behind if there are any issues.

Next you'll be asking us how to best shoplift 60" Soniq TVs because you don't want to use your JBs gift cards….

            • -1

@Assburg: You want me to get me into broad arguments. Here is a hint: I truly hope that my action would make our councils more responsive and efficient.

              • @bipsich: Haha don't make yourself to be a hero, this is a cunning argument.

          • @bipsich: its not that it is hard core, it is that it is a stupid gamble with very little benefit but a huge potential downside. Ozb is not a gambling forum, you are betting on saving less than $70 with a downside potentially in the thousands.

            • @gromit: more like $350-400.

              • @bipsich: Damage, Slashed tires, broken windows etc could cost you a lot more than 400.

              • @bipsich: I get it, but I recommend that if you go through with your plan then it's better for everyone (including you) if you park in a carpark or outside a park or anything that is not a person's house.

This avoids deliberately inconveniencing someone, plus it makes it far less likely that your car will be damaged in retaliation.

We live within walking distance to a Sydney train station, and an old guy near us smashes mirrors/windows etc of any car that is left in front of his house for more than about two days. I've never caught him in the act, but I've noticed that commuter cars in front of his house routinely get damaged overnight.

  • You can find decent parking in Homebush/Burwood, Catch the bus to airport (Train is too expensive).

  • +1

Skimping out on this part of your trip could end up costing you the most. Damaged car. Towed car. Stolen car. You will have no idea if any of these things have happened until you arrive back.

Arrange a minivan taxi or shuttle. Gives the keys to your car to someone trusted, who can fire up your car once a week.

  • Just get a rental car to and from AirPort. Might not save you much compared to public transport but will be hassle free.

  • +6

I've lived in the area for over 20 years. Don't do it. Trust me, we notice when you have parked your car on our street and get a bus/train to the airport. The neighbours cars become very familiar and we have resident stickers. It is very frustrating to the residents who already have limited parking and most residents will call council asap to get it moved. I have also seen things done to people's car who leave it their and go away on vacation when the coucil take too long to get their act together.

You might get away for 2-3 nights but most definitely not a month. I definitely suggest looking at arranged transportation.

  • When I was cheap on airport parking I would search Gumtree for people offering parking at their property/garage/land. Always managed to find a few good options.

BTW, if a friend of mine asked me to give him a lift to an airport, I wouldn't mind doing that. I can always ask that later in return.

Hey OP, as someone who works for organisation who frequently manages long-term on-street parking near Sydney International airport, please note the following:
    - The street parking you are after, close to the airport are typically in high-density, narrow streets, typically where residents don't have off-street parking.
    - Other comments are right to say, if your rego is still valid, TYPICALLY, it will not be touched by authorities.
    - Residents in above mentioned streets do not take kindly to long-term airport commuter parking. Trust me, they know who they are because they deal with it day in, day out. Council typically does not enforce any restrictions on this, as on-street parking is for everyone to share. NOTE…….if you park in a location where it may inconvenience the local residents, garbage collection trucks, delivery trucks, please buy comprehensive plus insurance before you leave. Not all damage will be done maliciously but some may be.

  • What's the deal with the train? Struggling to get off with kid and luggage? Geez, life must be hard for you then.

    • +3

Not with OP with what he is trying to do but with OP re this:

What's the deal with the train? Struggling to get off with kid and luggage? Geez, life must be hard for you then.

The difficulty is changing train at central station when you have 4-5 luggages and kids - it makes it even worse when the lift at Central is not operational which happens time to time.

Best way for OP is either get a taxi (suck up the $120-150 bill) or just get a rental car etc.

  • Bardwell Park train station could work - not sure how safe it is overnight. I think part of the area behind the RSL is commuter carpark, part club parking. Probably full when you try to use it though! I'd be running too late for the airport to afford such games.

    • Enjoy the nails in your tyres.

  • +1

It's Oz bargains no one gives out free advise, especially to North shore people, I'm sure you can afford it.

  • Whatever you do, don't park in Arncliffe. People there get very attached to their spaces outside their homes. Parking there is asking for trouble.

  • +1

Lend me the car for a month. I will drop you off at the airport.

  • +1

Hi OP, if you really want to drive your car, use parkhound.com.au (airbnb for car spaces) to book a car space for a month in Mascot/Arncliffe/Wolli Creek/suburbs nearby, that way you avoid all the problems of onstreet parking that 99% of replies so far have made clear to you. Yes it's not free, but once you shop around the rates can be significantly better than the long term parking rates from parking companies.

You have the option of uber/train/bus/walking (in decreasing order of $) to airport after parking in nearby suburbs. I had no issues with 400 bus after parking in Mascot or Maroubra Junction/Eastgardens, you just need to factor in extra time.

  • Catch train to wolli creek and catch an uber.

  • +4

Amazing. You're rich, you live in an expensive area of Sydney and can afford to take the family on a long overseas holiday costing many thousands of dollars. Yet you are trying to save a few dollars getting to the airport.

    • -4

      can you read ?

  • This is probably top 5 dumbest posts on here in my recent memory. You must have some real shit friends if you dont think they would do you a favour and drive your car to the airport that has the baby seats in it and drop it back off at your place. Heck I'd even do it if I was your neighbour. What is wrong with this world.

    • -3

sadly, ppl like you,not reading or listening but having an opinion about everything.

  • +2

You seem to be hell bent on this idea.

Personally, I won't do it - not worth the stress, hassles and risks (mentioned by people above) before the start of your holiday, but it is your life, your money, your car, your family and your holiday.

So I wish you good luck & hopefully everything works out.

  • I just park in south street near 1 station street Tempe and walk over. Residential area. Easy.

  • What is offsite airport parking like in Sydney?
Melbourne it's pretty good from what I remember.

Drive there and they shuttle you to the airport.

  • I used to have a customer near Mascot Station and i'd walk to or from the airport and get the train to their office. I travelled with carry on so it was fine. I was amazed by the number of people that would get on or off at Mascot to avoid the fee for one stop.

You might find something in that area, but i doubt it. But you could find something and save a few bucks walking from Mascot ;-)

  • If you have a family and need to lug around car seats then I would just park at the airport. Bit pricey but so worth it from a convenience point of view. They have a 10% off deal on at the moment.

  • Hire an Airtasker with baby seats + maybe a van/fwd to fit all your luggage/pram
