Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.

Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.

All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it's up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery-and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.

And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he's got to do it all alone.

Or does he?

Ha, literally finished the book 2h ago.
It's a really good story, with tons of relatively simple science (physics, chemistry astronomy) that most should understand and will make you feel smart ;)
    Definitely recommend!

I just finished it last week, good read :)

Good book - if you liked the Martian you'd like this. Note this looks like Trade Paperback size.

Thanks - ordered. Strange that you can get the dead-tree version delivered cheaper (with Prime) that the Kindle version

    • +1

Demonstrates misguided priorities - when we should be growing trees to absorb carbon, they’re chopped to make novels.

      • +12

Novels are the least of our worries in terms of deforestation :(

        • -2

I’ll guess most novels come from plantations, not forests. But that’s missing the point.

          • @AlexF: Shows how much you've missed the point. I read it on a kindle.

Lots of other reasons deforestation occurs and most oxygen is generated by the oceans.

            • @Caped Baldy: Well, not really the oceans… But, yeah I'll accept that answer. Haha

      • +7

It’s carbon capture, grow tree, turn into paper, grow another tree!

So long as it’s plantation timber and not clear cutting forests to replace with farming cattle it’s not actually that bad. Only when the paper breaks down is it releasing co2.

That’s said, the fuel for cutting and shipping the book around probably negates any benefit.

    • +1

That was my first thought as well. I'll hold off for a Kindle edition sale.

    Beep boo boop.

Great book, up there with The Martian.

  • Haven't read a book in a while but this sounds like my kind of thing. Ordered

How does The Martian book compare to the movie? Worth reading?

    • +1

The movie was very faithful to the book. If you enjoyed the 'science-ing' then the book has even more, and there's a pretty cool section near the end of the book which was cut out from the movie.

    • +5

Novel was much better. They had to condense the whole book into a 2 hr movie. I did not enjoy the movie as much as i did the novel.

  • +3

Thanks OP. Hopefully this is better than Artemis which was absolute dog shite.

    • It's heaps better, felt the same way.

    • I enjoyed Artemis. Just finished it a week ago after listening to Hail Mary (which was better as was the Martian). Audiobooks for all three.

    • Yep better than that, not as good as the martian

  • I liked the Martian but will wait for Audio.

    • There's an audiobook as well, just use an audible credit?

    • +5

Audiobook was pretty good. I enjoyed it.

      • Audio book was awesome, how do I say without spoiling, there were some sounds that were extremely well translated in the audiobook…

        • Halfway through the book at the moment, yes wondering how they would do those sounds in the audiobook version!

          • +2

            @uggugg: They make them…. Audible.

Yeah they just make some fast bleep bloop sounds, I haven't read the book only listened to the audio book. Then if I remember he will read back the noises and translate them in his head as he figures them.

    • +2

I've finished the audiobook, it is masterfully narrated. 10/10 👌👌👌

  • damn, just bought this last week for double $$$

  • +1

I wish that Amazon also reduce the Kindle version to $8. I prefer Kindle to paper-based books as I hate the extra storage space required, as well as the environment.

    • Exactly right!

I clicked on the link having already made the decision to buy the Kindle version, and it's more expensive than the physical paperback version! I guess I'll wait.

  • +1

Feel like I'm gonna get whiplash from Andy Weir. The Martian, amazing! Artemis, exists! PHM, highly recommended! (No spoilers, I'm still gonna read it)

  • Seems like it's really reddit and the guy's name is Ryland so I hate him already but I'll give it a go. Cheers OP.

  • Great book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I read the book and immediately listened to the audiobook straight after.

  • +1

Vastly better than book 2, but is kinda like a dumbed-down version of The Martian mixed with ridiculous Dan-Brownesque cliffhangers everywhere. And the end was ridiculously lame. But still a mostly decent read, I guess.

    • +3

And the end was ridiculously lame

Yep, for a nerdy easy reading sci fi book, it was pretty decent right up until then :)

    • Agree, the ending left me disappointed. The last 5% dragged down the rest of the book, but it's still overall a great story

  • Kmart had the larger paperback for $12 a few weeks back

  • +2

Def worth checking out the audiobook. The sound effects for some of the dialogue are incredible.

  • It’s compelling, but the writing lacks sophistication, perhaps the 1st person narrative contributes to it. By the same token, it makes it very accessible to a wide range of ages. 7/10

  • +4

Just in case anyone missed the gag, Hail Mary, the ship, has Grace, the character inside of it. One might say, "Hail Mary full of Grace" …

Confirmed by Andy, and it's a terrible pun!

  • This was a fun read. Well worth it
