50-60% off is what I'd call a reasonable price for their gear - but not a bargain.

  • This is their normal promotion - usually get 40% or so off for joining, just a bit more as there is a sale, not a bargain. Its usually plastered all over their window.
Sign up is free for various groups like YHA members, so ask first.
Besides, Kathmandu is overpriced rubbish. Stitching or fabric usually fails.
Should have guessed - a newbie. Nothing wrong with that though.

    • I've found their product quality a bit hit and miss. Some products are quite good, some are rebranded generic rubbish. Their prices are also all over the place, but generally slightly expensive. Competing stores (Mountain Design) seem to have sales about now as well, so it's worth shopping around for expensive things like these.

      • Yes, this is one of the regular sales times (Easter) at most outdoor stores.

      • I totally agree about the "hit and miss" aspect of their quality. I have had a few things that started falling apart after little use.

However, i have also had others that have lasted years of heavy use. Notably quick dry towels, a wallet, and those travel pants with detatchable legs that i wore 90% of the time during 4 months backpacking around europe and still wear regularly 7 years later.

HMm haven't shopped at K for years. Back in the late 90's when it first came to Tas ppl went nuts.. these days even their 50-60% off prices are too high. I can get a much nicer down jacket from Lands End for less than half their sale price. The quality is better, and they look much nicer. Another great place to get outdoor gear is sierratradingpost.com

    • I remember those days in the Hobart store.
Quality has declined since 90's, & there is more competition for the sales dollar.

  • The only thing i've found to be good at kathmandu are their aluminium bottles.
Though their cotton sleeping bag liners are $24. Thats not bad. Need one of those.

    • I would avoid aluminium drink bottles. They are not safe - the liner inside may contain BPA and worse, toxic aluminium will leach into your drink when the liner is scratched or degraded. Stick to stainless steel bottles.

      • someone's been reading too many scare-mongering websites

as for the sleeping bag liners, get mum to sow up a folded sheet, they work a treat & are a bit more durable in the wash.

        • Did that, but is a bit heavy - but lasts longer.

    • I bought the silk liner. On first use, stiching failed & fabric ripped, as corners were not reinforced. Took it back & replacement was same. Did repairs while travelling, so could not return.

      • HAHA went and checked it out. Still a rip off (FFS the silk on is 139 normally and about 50 on sale). Went to Mountain Designs and got a cotton YHA type liner (with pillow insert) for $17 down from $30.

And I could make my own but for $17 why not just buy one! :D

SAYING THAT…the town hall kathmandu was packed!

    • Supercheap sell the bottles quite cheaply. Super cheaply, even. A mate and I got some for about $6 each recently but I forgot to post it here.

Wow Kathmandu are having a SALE!!!! that never happens.

  • i used to be a big fan of the pocketpack foldable backpacks that were $15 when they had the 50% sales. durable, 20L capacity and double zippered so you can lock it. now they've dropped the capacity to 15L and hiked up the price.

then i bought a hydration pack that leaked straight away. i never bother with their crap since

edit: summit club membership might also be free if you're a uni student. that's why i signed up years ago. but a couple of years back they changed it so you had to spend more than $100 a year to keep membership free.

  • I like their soft shell jackets. Picked one up for about $100 last time which I thought was quite a good deal.
