so it wasn't my imagination that hard drives got really pricy lately

  • +1

Yeah I got 2 from Castle Hill OW, price matched too $94.05. added two more slots total 4 for my Buffalo NAS. was quote $129 each in Sunday Northrock market lucky did not buy it. Thanks for the info Panda.

DSE has a USB 3.0 interface @ $99 if anyone want

    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/XM1280/seagate-freeagent-gof…

No idea what is it rpm though.

    • +1

      that's a 1TB, do the maths… ha ha…

      • +2

        Ok, some math

        1 TB x USB 3 = 3
        2 TB x USB 2 = 4

        Both are $99, and 4 > 3, so should get the 2TB USB2 one

        • Haha, I like your math

        • Depends on what you're using it for. If it's going to be a storage drive where you put stuff on their once and keep it there, then 2TB is preferable. But if you're going to frequently transfer stuff onto it and replace older stuff I would prefer the extra speed. I make large backups on a daily basis, removing older backups, so for me the extra speed is more important since I spend a lot more time transferring to and from the drive than you might.

        • Thank "lostn" for the explanation, so many judgemental people these day. I buy neither of them since i don't download any movies or music.

  • +2

Just got one priced matched by OW for my Time machine. Thanks Pandabargain!

  • Please note some posts indicate that the internal drive could also be a 5900 rpm drive (see comments)

    Model # ST2000DL003:

    http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?name=st2000dl003-bcuda…

    • Mine is, Part#9VT166-570, says Green drive on the upper right hand corner of the label.

      • hmmmmm, can I assume that if there is no 'Green' label on the upper right hand corner the package will contain a 7200 rpm drive?

    • +3

Not really a problem, pretty sure both DSE and Officeworks state in the descriptions on the websites that the drives are 7200rpm, before you do anything else just run a program that tells you the drive model and rpm speed and if its not a 7200rpm return it as product not as stated and get another.

      • What a pity :(

Don't know if the staff at Officeworks are intelligent enough to comprehend the advertised and actual spindle speeds of the internal hard drive

From their perspective it will look like I'm trying to return a product that is not defective

Even if they allow me to return the product I don't think they'll let me break open a few more packages just to find one that has a 7200 rpm drive

  • Price matched and beaten at OW Auburn, there's about 5 drives left around 4:30,

    thanks Panda!

  • Price matched at office works trinity gardens. Took my tablet in with the page loaded and they did it straight away.

  • +3

Officeworks Dee Why refused to pricematch. According to the genius working there, online exclusive prices dont qualify when the physical store is selling at a higher price. Sometimes I wonder where they find these idiots…

    • Happened to me this morning.

      Officeworks "tech-experts" are jokes.
They talk as if their machines are the "latest thing" and the bigger the hard drive the faster it is!

    • The officeworks site says this:
      What about online stores?

Identical products are price matched against online stores but as with any other kind of store, the item must be currently in stock.

  • A mate just ordered one on the net, paid with credit card, got frequent flyer thingies and paid $94.05

His word:: "Get$4.95 staff discount off"

Maybe tricky is now matching OW ?

    hmmm

  • He does not work for tricky etc

  • +1

For anyone having problems ordering and using Opera, try Chrome.

Edit: The website used https up until finalizing my order, at which point it switched back to regular http. I don't think I'll be ordering online from them again…

    • +2

Thanks, was starting to feel the unstoppable rage boiling. You may have just saved lives.

  • +1

I've just opened mine and it’s a green HD which is 5400rpm. It’s very easy to open the case and install your old hard drive, if you want to reuse the case.

  • OW still price matching. Quote "is this the Dick Smith price match?"
If they run short of stock they just need to place a bulk order with Dicks

  • +1

Just picked up the last one from OW in East Perth.

Went in and they price matched it straight up, dude who I spoke to mentioned it was the second one today (only 9.30am here)

    • lol it was probably me they were talking about i got their at 8 am and bought all they had i mustve missed one !!!!

  • Thanks, I've just bought one at officeworks Elizabeth Street Melbourne, pricematched with 5% discount.

  • Went to Officeworks Clayton this morning.. their price had already matched Dick's $99 so I couldn't get the 5% off. However, I have a Coles team member discount so got the 5% off anyway.

Is there any way to check if the drive inside is 7200 or 5400 without breaking the shrinkwrap? I want to return it if it isn't 7200.

    • +1

Can you use Coles team member discount after a price match?

      • It's not supposed to be done. That said, if OW matches the price, you can get 5% off the lower price as ShrewOrJustTight has done as a regular staff discount.

        • How does he do that? Or did you mean me?

      • I have never tried it to be honest. But I have too much decency to ask. It's a big ask to have them beat a competitor by 5% and then take off 5% on top of it.

      • Na I tried, but the system rejected the card. Can't do another discount if it's already discounted.

    • Did they have many left at the Clayton Store?

      • Sorry it took this long to reply… posting limit for new users kinda sucks.

When I went yesterday there was only 2 left and I took 1.

The drive turned out to be 5900 RPM, so I wouldn't bother getting the last one. The ticket price still says $127 so the typical customer wouldn't know its true price. That is how OW normally does things when they are price matching a competitor privately (even if it's a catalog item it will be cheaper than it is in the catalog).

The product description is no longer listed on OW website so I can't even claim false advertising on the 7200 RPM.

The product code on the back of the box is ST320005EXM101-RK, the exact same as some people's drives who have a 7200 RPM. This means it's impossible to know what drive you will get. In other words it's a lottery.

It also says DOM: 10/2011 which I presume is the manufacture date.

        • they changed the drives over from 5900rpm to the newer 7200rpm ones in 9/2011, so any manufacture red after that should be 7200rpm.

oh and if clayton is out, I got mine @ ferntree gully; they had at least 30 when I went.

        • Just do a search on google for http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Dat…

Then click on the 'Cached' link for that page and print it out take the drive back.
More than likely the staff at Officeworks can see the page on their systems at the store anyway.

    • Not sure about just looking at the box, but before you do anything to the drive try something like Crystaldiskinfo and it will give you the drive model and RPM.
Both Dick Smith and Officeworks(drive listing seems to be gone now) describe this as a 7200rpm model so if you get a 5400/5900rpm model take it back as it's not as described.

    • Weird if Officeworks changed their price as their website (front page) still shows $127: http://i39.tinypic.com/15hexye.jpg

Clicking it doesn't go to the product though (which appears to have been removed). Dodgy…

Anyone used these drives in a USB3 or eSATA caddy/docking station?

  • good deal, but looking at the newegg reviews; it's just too much risk for this reward.

    • I'm kind of glad I held off on this deal.
Perhaps this deal is a sign of manufacturers catching up by increasing the supply of HDDs to the market.

      • yes sir that's the one. a very very mixed bag of reviews there. I'd be concerned about even getting the drive on its own WITH warranty included.

  • This was only $65 on a deal in January.. wow. And that is post floods.

My gripe with Seagate EXT drives is that unlike WD Mybooks, you can't stand the thing up vertically due to slanted design, so it takes up more space on your desk.

  • I am struggling to find the exact product on the OW website.

Can anyone supply a direct link?

    • They have removed it from the OW website (see my comment above with screen capture). You may find it instore.

      • Thanks daydream. I tried OW Brisbane City and they were out of stock.

So can I presume, bar physical store stock, the only way now is through DSE?

        • You can try price matching the DSE price at others (JB, HN, GoodGuys, whatever is convenient). They are unlikely to beat the price though, just match it at best. Luck of the draw.

  • Damn, that was fast shipping! Ordered wednesday night, and the postie just dropped them off to me at work. Kudos to Dick Smith and Au Post.

  • I think I will wait for deals on a usb 3 model!!

  • Just received my order from OW,
    Model No. ST320005EXM101-RK, DOM:12/2011
no green label here so hopefully a 7200.

    • mine were 11/2011 and 7200rpm

  • all 4 arrived for me
    all 7200rpm drives

  • OW Osborne Park WA said $127 on the shelf but $99 at the checkout so pricematching is no go there. Bought two anyway, I consider this like paying $10 for delivery :)
    Edit: tons left.

    • For other Perthites, OW Morley had maybe 10 or so left yesterday. They're $99 on shelf now though.

All the ones I looked at were DOM 11/2011. I bought one and it was 7200RPM. Thinking of going back today and nabbing another one.

  • I just got 2 from Officeworks in Chadstone (VIC). Shelf label showed $127, but they already scanned up at $99. I had staff discount though, so $94.05 FTW!

Have now removed both from the cases, happy to say both were 7200rpm models :-)

Still plenty left on the shelf at Chaddie

  • I like how when a good computer related bargain appears on OZB it usually means buying from Officeworks instead of where the original bargain was offered. ;)

I'm going to a different OW this time to get a 12/2011 DOM model and going to try and get a refund on my 5900 model. I'm not sure what they will do with it since it's been opened.

    • How can you return? I couldn't find any way to see what the drive inside was without cracking open the case and reading the label (HD Tune, etc couldn't tell me what the drive was just connected over USB), presumably you must have found a program that would tell you because they surely wouldn't take back one that you had cracked open…
Luckily for me both mine were the 7200rpm model I was after :)

      • I used Crystaldiskinfo, and returned the drive, got my money back. It was hassle free. They asked me why, I said the drive was the older model and not the 7200 rpm models Dick Smith were selling (which OW was price matching). They got someone from "Technology" to come and inspect the package, but all she did was open the lid and saw the drive was there and said "Yes it's in perfect resaleable condition" and they gave me a refund. I could have replaced that drive with a 1TB one and they wouldn't have known.

I'm considering whether I should buy another one or wait for other deals, and perhaps price drops on HDDs in general. I don't really want USB 2.0 for an external drive so it would be for opening up. Maybe a single 2TB drive is enough for now.

  • Which internal drive among the 3 found (5400, 5900 & 7200) is the most reliable?

  • Is anyone else experiencing a similar difficulty in updating their firmware.

    I have a 7200rpm ST2000DM001 with CC9C firmware.

When running the Seagate utility for CC9D I have this message

Model Matched, No Firmware Matched! Will not download firmware.

The instructions state: Even though the model is a match, the current version on the disk is not compatible with the version supplied in this update.

Yet, CC9C is a known prior firmware.

    Any ideas?

  • WARNING:
mine arrived today, 10/11 and it was 5900rpm Seagate ST2000DL001 (9VT156) wrong drive. I called Dicksmith and complained , they advised another team would contact me and book in a courier to pick it up and correct the issue.
    anyone else experienced this?

    • You need 12/2011 to be sure it's 7200 RPM. 10/2011 is 5900. I don't know about 11/2011, but I know for sure that 12/2011 and onwards is 7200.

Better to buy from OW so you can inspect the box for yourself.

  • Received mine from Dick Smith last night -> both are DOM 11/2011 and both show up as 7200rpm with Crystaldiskinfo. Thanks OP!! Soon to be plucked from their enclosures!

  • Got four delivered today. All were DOM 10/2011 and they are ST2000DL003-9VT166 with firmware CC98. These drives are 5900RPM and the firmware is not upgradeable with anything that Seagate published :-(

I called the Dick Smith 1800 number, explained that they advertised a 7200RPM drive, but delivered 5900RPM and that I would like the product exchanged for what they advertised/sold. The guy on the other end of the phone was helpful, but there was not much he could do for me at the time. He said he'd get in touch with the "online sales team and their buyer" and call me back tomorrow.

We'll see what happens next. I guess I could always suggest to try contacting a local DSE store and see if they have any DOM 12/2011 stock I could swap for.

Haven't voted yet. +ve for deal, -ve for actual product and undecided on how DSE handle the support.

    • +1

After talking to Dick Smith on the phone today, they suggested that the online store can refund or I can take the drives to a physical store and swap them to see if I can find 7200RPM drives. They said that even Seagate could not tell them which ones will be 5400, 5900 or 7200, just by looking at the packaging.

I went to Chatswood Chase store and swapped all four DOM 10/2011 for DOM 11/2011. I just tested the DOM 11/2011 and they are only 5900RPM. :-(

So, it looks like the DOM 11/2011 batch is not all smooth sailing. I wonder if there are any Sydney stores that have DOM 12/2011.

  • received 2 from Dicksmith, ST320005EXM101-RK, DOM 11/2011.
Checked with Crystaldiskinfo and both are 7200RPM.
    I'm relieved.

    • Would you mind posting the serial number(s)? You can leave out the last three digits if you are concerned about privacy.

All the eight drives I tested had serial numbers starting with 2GHNYxxx and all were 5900RPM. It would be good to know if the 7200RPM drives can be identified by the serial numbers.

  • +4

I visited six Dick Smith stores today, looking for DOM 12/2011 drives. Could not find a single one, out of perhaps 150-200 drives I inspected. Some boxes had no DOM, the rest was a mix of 07/2011, 08/2011, 10/2011 and 11/2011.

    • A test of four 10/2011 drives turned up four 5900RPM drives.
    • A test of nine 11/2011 drives turned up five 5900RPM drives and four 7200RPM drives.
    • The serial numbers of 7200RPM drives were 2GHNYTxx, 2GHNYYxx, 2GHNZ0xx, 2GHNZExx.
    • The serial numbers for the 5900RPM drives were mostly in the 2GHNYxxx range, with only one in the 2GHNZxxx range.

My guess would be that Seagate were switching from 5900RPM to 7200RPM drives somewhere during the production of batches 2GHNYxxx and 2GHNZxxx during 11/2011

Anyway, after a lot of stuffing around, I now have four 7200RPM drives. I hope the above information will be of use to others who may be trying to get their hands on a 7200RPM drive, rather than getting a refund.

I want to say thanks to the Dick Smith staff in the stores I visited. Everyone was helpful and they checked all of their stock, even going out the back to check for me. The Chatswood Chase boys saw me twice and on my second visit allowed me to test potential replacement drives on one of their demo PCs with my copy of Crystal Disk Info on a USB stick. We got lucky and the first box we tested had an 7200RPM drive.

    • DS actually opened up the shrink wrapping in all these HDDs for you to test them? Goodness. Now all their drives are technically "used". I don't think I'm going to buy from DS again now..

And you actually visited six stores to test over a dozen drives? And they all had no problems opening their stock for you? I guess the 7200 RPM drives really mean a lot to you to go through all that trouble.

I would have just gone to OW instead. Plenty of stores had the 12/2011 drives.

  • Just went to Dick Smith Macarthur Square as i received a drive dated 10/2012 and 5900RPM.
Went through about 10 drives on the shelves and a few out the back, all were dated 10 or 11, so i picked up a 11 with the latest serial number, ill let you know once i test it again.
    Fingers crossed

    • And its a 7200.
Serial Number on the box was 2GHNYXFR

      Hope this helps others
