Do you need 1 of those steering wheel setup or is it good to play on either controller or keyboard + mouse?

    • +11

A wheel is pretty much a necessity for this game and is really immersive with a proper setup. Whilst a controller technically works, it's really difficult to control and you'll become frustrated quickly. Definitely not optimised for a controller compared to other more arcadey games. Keyboard + mouse is pretty much out of the question.

      • What is the cheapest decent wheel to get?

        • +3

          Logitech G29/G920

        • +1

If u want new, Thurstmaster T80 is a good basic one. Otherwise, u can get a used Logitech G29 or Thrustmaster T150 for cheap.

        • +2

At the price it's currently at at JB, I'd be taking the Thrustmaster T150 Pro without hesitation. The T3PA pedals it comes with are equivalent to the G29, but the drive system in the thrustmaster (combination of belt and gear) results in a smoother experience than the G29 (which is gear only).

The only downside IMO to the T150 v the G29 is that the G29 does a better job at feeling "premium" for the price with a nicer wheel, but if you get the racing bug the T150 will allow you to swap wheels to whatever you can choose in their range. The G29 is unmodifiable in this regard unless you're prepared to delve into the world of 3rd party wheels.

Source: Own a G29, love it, but if I had my time again I'd take the T150 for $299 without doubt. Personally hoping for a sale on the T300 somewhere during black Friday so I can move from logitech to Thrustmaster.

Edit: looks like JB is sold out of the T150. Apologies

@XabiFernando: I agree, I picked up a second hand t300 cheap, and it has been amazing. Big step up in feel compared to my previous driving force Logitech. Quick note, the t150 does not have a detachable wheel though, your have to get a t300 for that. If you are looking for a cheap wheel though, additional wheels are quite pricey, so are probably not in the budget range. The new t248 wheel is about $600 and is going to have a great set of pedals, but wheel is cheapish looking and non-detachable. You can still pick up a t300 for $700 at the gamesmen, but the pedals aren't amazing, and that will cost money to upgrade too.
If you are not keen on spending >$500, i'd keep an eye out for a second hand t150 at about $150 or a t300 at about $300.
Edit: looks like this second hand prices are higher than I thought, $300-$500 second hand…

        • Ive been using a Driving Force GT for the last decade. Its not the most high end wheel but best value for money at $70 that I bought it for. Its got 20 buttons as well which is great for stuff like AC which has lots of configs you can make on the fly.

      • Support 360 wheel?

    • +4

you definitely want a steering wheel set up for this racing sim

    • Fantastic game at a fantastic price. Huge mod community and ecosystem.

I played AC for a couple of years with an Xbox 360 USB controller - it isn't that bad and you can learn to be half decent too, at least with the slower cars. You need to get smooth on the thumb stick inputs. But, the faster the cars, the harder it is to catch slides without over-correcting - forget trying to control the F1 cars.

But yes, a wheel is best!

    • Check gumtree or Meta Facebook marketplace

      • +1

Honestly I found people trying to sell them for more than what some retail stores were selling them for (or the price was close enough you'd may as well just buy it new).

        • Yes it is sometimes the case. Doesnt meant you can't make an offer or wait for a better deal.

    • +1

I disagree with other commenters here — a controller (I use ps5) if configured properly, so that it isn't too sensitive, works fine.

I used my ps5 controller for a while just to see what a sim racer was like before I committed and bought a g29. The g29 is definitely more fun for sure but I think the game is entirely playable with a controller only too.

In some instances I reckon the controller is actually easier to control - especially with correcting countersteer. The difficulty is that you can't really feel your wheels slipping like you can on an actual racing wheel and you have to really pay attention to the screen.

      • Does this mean that there is probably the option to use a keyboard and mouse on a PC?

  • +1

Thanks mate, was waiting for this one sale!

  • Cheers mate. Just bought it to see if I'm really into this type of game before I buy GT7 and PS5 lol

    • +1

How really into it do you want to be? Could get a quest 2 and be inside the game. That's what I plan to do.

      • +1

Interestingly I've found my CV1 does better than my Q2 in AC. I only have a 1080ti so I might be suffering from the limited video encoding capacity.

        • I have the typical quest 2 colour washout with AC. I never found a way of correcting it so half the time i couldnt make out the side of the track and the sand/dirt. But it's pretty cool otherwise.

    • You might find this tough if it's your first racing game - if you do, I wouldn't let it put you off buying GT7

  • How does this game compare to Forza or Project Cars? Trying to figure out if I need another racing sim game

    • +2

this is feels more realistic compared to Forza with his the cars behave imo

      • +1

Surprisingly one of the games that feels most realistic to me is Live for Speed and thats 15 years old

    • +1

Much more of a sim experience, feels a lot more raw in terms of user interface. I generally enjoy the physics engine on this game, decent tyre models and graphics are decent. Unfortunately haven't tried iRacing to compare with its laser scanned tracks.

The mod community is quite large, so you can add many tracks.

Project cars is moving towards a more arcade like experience (though Project cars 1 & 2 were similar to AS), whilst Forza has always been more arcade like.

      • project cars 3 is arcade now, it was better in the previous versions.

    • +6

Much more realistic than Forza/GT/PCars although the career mode is pretty bad

The mods make the game though, this is one of my favs

Not perfect, but a rough guide to where most of the popular racing games fit in terms of simulation realism and graphics:

How do I buy this if I already have original AC? It prompts me saying I will basically not get 2 copies of AC which I accept but then at payment method I get this:

Your purchase could not be completed because it looks like you already own one of the games you are trying to buy. Please check your account and your cart to verify you are buying an item you do not already own.

    • -1

      Buy it as a gift.

    • -2

Pretty self explanatory. You can't if you already own it. You can only purchase it for others. Long gone are the days of storing steam gifts.

However, your use of "original AC" makes me think that maybe you believe there's more than one version. The Ultimate Edition is just the base game with DLC. Check on the purchase page to see if you get a discount for the bundled DLC as sometimes you do, sometimes you don't and sometimes it costs even more as the algorithms can be screwy.

      • How it is self explanatory? You had to explain it. The fact I have to buy individual DLCs which in total cost more than the package deal just because i've already given them money is stupid.

    • You can't.
I sent Steam a support request about this the last time AC Ultimate was on sale.
They basically said that while they support bundling, that Kunos does not support it for whatever reason with Assetto Corsa and so you have to buy the DLCs separately.

It's pretty bad. I just decided to do it as it only cost me a few extra bucks at the time as I didn't want to bother try jumping through the hoops that may have allowed me to buy it.

    • +2

No one else replying has got it right. This exact issue happened to me before earlier this year and I found a solution.

There's a way you can remove a steam game permanently from your account - do that and remove AC from your library, and then buy this.

It's a bit annoying but it will work.

  • Thanks

Tempting at this price. But then I'll need a wheel setup for another $600 odd on a Thrustmaster T300 RS at the bare minimum. If I really want to make the most of it, I'm gonna need the 5K Vive Pro 2 right, for another $2,200 or so. Tempting… oh yeah, don't have a gaming rig so I'll need maybe one of these 3080 prebuilts for another $3,000. Of course, I can't be a pleb and just mount this stuff on my desk! I'm gonna have to invest in a cockpit rig for another $1,500 for something decent. What? That didn't come with a seat? Ok let's go seat shopping I suppose!

Once I'm all set up, I'm gonna need to buy a REAL racecar to prove to my doubters I really am a very fast driver on a racetrack. Naturally, I'm gonna want a Porsche 911 GT3 RS duhh..
At this point it's evident I'm not made of money, so I can't afford something new, so I'll have to settle for a used 2016 one for around $400,000.

So yeah, $11.67 is very, very, very tempting!

    • if you want to go cheaper VR it works great with the quest 2 via wireless pc link

Iv started with a G920 but can see that getting replaced with something nice if i use it enough haha

    • Virtual tournaments are often organised the winners of which have previously been put into development programs to drive in real life so that's your end game, buy all this crap as an investment into your race driver future.

  • +1

Is there any official multiplayer for this title?

  • +1

    LAN option??

Almost bought this for myself and my 3 boys to race on over the weekend but noticed only option is online PvP which according to reviews is these days pretty dismal due to lack of servers high ping etc etc….

So yes I am showing my age, but I miss the days of having a LAN play option. Any games in this genre that have a LAN play option anymore but are newish?

    • +1

Why? The reason games like this don't have LAN is because you can create your own server. No high ping or lack of players issue either as it's local and you have your own players.

It's easy to set up. Just do a search on Youtube.

    • There are plenty of Australian servers around, not necessarily the most populated.
But really, any server with a ping of 300 or below is fine to race on with no worries as long as your internet is stable.

  • Got it thanks OP. Now just need a PC to run it…Already have a G920 and a rig but they're connected to the xbox.

Don't forget to install Content Manager and SOL to make the most out of the game, along with all the extra cars, tracks and mods!

A controller is a cheap way to see if you're more of a casual player or want to step up to a wheel

  • Cheers !

  • It's 6 years old, how does it hold up with more modern titles?

    • +1

      still better than modern titles.

    • It's still very good in terms of driving experience. I tried a couple other similar games like rFactor and Project Cars 2 and never liked them compare to AC. Graphic and UI definitely a bit old but still clean. Don't want to spend subs for iRacing so never tried it.

Huge mods but I find I always screw up the game setting after installing mods so I decided to stay with its original contents.

Now I nearly only play it's brother ACC and go on AC if I want to drive manual.

  • +1

    there is Asseto Corsa Competitzione

    • +2

True. Bought that recently for $16 odd thru OzB and I just bought this. Now I have both and no steering wheel. But I look forward to the future.

  • Great game/simulator.

There are lots of mods available online to install too. Tracks, cars, gfx, features.

But yes, need a steering wheel to drive properly and in a rewarding manner

  • +1

Great game. Online can be sometimes toxic as there arent many Aussie servers. If you really want a challenge then try to get Gold on all the "Challenges" in the game (there are also achievements for each of them). Nothing like doing 90+ laps of Laguna Seca trying to get gold!

    • What makes a car game online toxic??

      • Some people tend to exploit (i.e. deliberate false start), then you also get the standard rammers and ragers who dont know racing etiquette. First corners are always fun in online races.

  • +1

My 3000+ hours on assetto with a sim rig will say this is a great game. Modding community is strong both paid and free.

Get content manager and Custom shader patch straight away.

    • where do you get the mods from?

  • www.racedepartment.com or assettocorsa.club

A few track mods i recommend trying out (Online as well)

    Pacific Coast 1.0
    L.A Canyon 1.2
    Shutoku 0.9.3

They are my go-to Free roam Chill maps.

  • Missed it, it's back up to $58 :(
