What to Do with Multiple Visa Giftcards?

Hi All,

Would love someone with a savvy mind to give me a hand.

I received 4 x $250 prepaid Visa giftcards as a gift from a company that I work with. I used them on various things and now there are two gift cards remaining with $61 each on them and one with $12 on it.

I understand that there is nowhere to 'consolidate' them, but does anyone have any ideas?

I want to purchase new birkenstocks/shoes, so I've tried to purchase gift vouchers, but most come in denominations of $50 / $75, meaning wasted money or not enough funds on there. I have also tried to link them to my Paypal account but they don't appear to work.

Any ideas?

Cheers

    food shopping
    .

    • ^ This.

The $133 worth of gift cards you use on a food shop is then applied to your purchase of Birkenstocks via debit/credit card, just in your head.

I have also tried to link them to my Paypal account but they don't appear to work.

Linking gift cards to your PayPal account won't add the gift card's balance to your PayPal balance, the card will just be linked to the account.

  • I have a similar issue and most online stores don't do split payment.

If these are visa giftcards that can be used in physical stores, the only way to use them up is to go in store and do a split payment when you buy something.

Can be anything from fuel to food, or any other store. Just say you want to put $12 on this card, then $61 on the other. Then pay the rest of your other cards.

Just not in ALDI (ALDI you can only split with cash-card).
Coles/WW you can easily split on multiple cards.

      • Handy to know…..

If you find a store that has a physical location they will usually be happy to do a split payment over the phone and then ship your good as you would as if buying online.

I recently did this with CC reward gift cards.

  • You can buy gift cards from woolworths - including the WISH GIFT CARD (INSIDE SUPERMARKET - NOT ONLINE) pay with split payments.

    Or

Pay your council/utility bills online/@auspost if they allow (that's what i usually do)

if nothing, give it to you kiddo or something dude, reward them for doing something good that should have gotten

Like literally any purchase where you can use Visa???

    • No.

A lot of online merchants don't accept prepaid Visa gift cards, because they are "unverified" Visa cards. A lot of online merchants now require cards to support 3D Secure (1.0 or 2.0), which basically rules out any "unverified" cards.

      • And what about physical shops? It's not like spending $134 at the supermarket, petrol station, cafe, etc., etc. is an arduous task.

The supermarket is my personal go to for spending the last dregs of any gift cards I get.

It should be fine to use in-store, but it would ultimately be at the merchant's discretion. Some merchants may not want to accept prepaid Visa gift cards to reduce their exposure to fraudulent transactions. In those cases, it would more likely be the merchant saying "no, I will not accept it", rather than their point-of-sales systems automatically blocking it.

I know that Woolworths also blocks some prepaid EFTPOS gift cards as payment methods if you are trying to purchase some of the gift cards from their stores, and I have a sneaking suspicion they do the same thing for the Only1 Visa gift card they sell there too.

The supermarket is my personal go to for spending the last dregs of any gift cards I get.

Agreed, that would be the most hassle-free way to do it.

    Welcome to OzBargain!

I received 4 x $250 prepaid Visa giftcards … and now there are two gift cards remaining with $61 each on them

Sounds like someone may have been purchasing $100 Coles Gift Mastercards!

I understand that there is nowhere to 'consolidate' them

I think it's time to get creative.

    Here are some suggestions:

    • Use the three gift cards to purchase a $100 Coles Gift Mastercard for $94.50. The deal ends at the end of today, but if your nearest stores have stock, that may be possible. You'll need to go to a serviced checkout (the checkouts with the dedicated assistants, or the service desk) to do this, and ask for "split card payments" and state you want to use multiple Visa cards. This will use up $12 on one card, $61 on another card and $21.50 on another card. Coles doesn't allow split payments at its self-service checkouts when you're trying to purchase a gift card…

    • Alternatively, you can use the three gift cards and another payment method (e.g. your own debit/credit card) to purchase 2x $100 Coles Gift Mastercards or 1x $250 Coles Gift Mastercard. The latter would make sense if you want to use the Coles Gift Mastercard to purchase Birkenstocks/shoes.

    • You could try to purchase a gift card from Coles, Woolworths, BIG W, First Choice Liqour, etc that allows you to load any dollar amount (e.g. Uber / Uber Eats gift card, Apple gift card, Google Play gift card, The Perfect EFTPOS gift card (which has a purchase fee), Only1 Visa gift card (which has a purchase fee), WISH gift card, Coles Group & Myer gift card). Woolworths allows you to use multiple payment methods when paying for gift cards at any checkout (unlike Coles), so that would be easier.

    • You could also use these gift cards to top up account balances you may have with Apple or Amazon.

    • Alternatively, just spend it on your groceries or fuel or other everyday essentials (as others have suggested), as these businesses are more likely to allow you to use multiple payment methods in one transaction. I think this idea is the most hassle-free option.

Thanks heaps for the suggestions mate!

      • Or if you have a telecom bill like Telstra you can prepay any amount too.
e.g. add card in Paypal and pay via paypal with no fees.

  • Jb accepts split payment

Any bricks & mortar store will accept split payments.

I just use them to buy groceries

    • Sort of. Two examples:

      • Kmart doesn’t allow split payments at all if you’re buying a gift card. It’s a limitation on the POS system (for some reason) and staff cannot override it.

      • ALDI only allows you to use two payment methods if one payment method is card and the other payment method is cash. That may not be helpful if the OP is not a cash spender.

  • I use left over money on gift cards on petrol. I stack it with shopper dockets

  • I had this issue recently. I used some in store at Woolies or Coles as they allow split payments, and can also buy Amazon AU giftcards for any amount you like.

    Coles, Woolworths or Petrol.

  • Why not just use them in store? Birkenstock has retail stores in all cities i believe. Failing that; myer/dj's sell them too.
Any of these places will do split payments across multiple cards.

Otherwise just spend them on groceries and use the money you would otherwise have spent on those groceries on the shoes.
