  • Is it a data only sim, or could you put it in a phone and make calls?

    • The 50GB offer expired 31/3/21 - shown in sticker on some packs.
Might still be able to redeem, as Woolies promote it as having 50GB. Contact Optus.

Otherwise it is only a $2 Optus "Prepaid Data Only" SIM which needs to be activated by date on box next year.

      • It successfully activated with 50GB.

This is more of a lottery than a deal

    • +2

Nearly 13k clicks - you're very late to this popular Deal!

Plenty were available across many stores when the Deal posted! The Mods verified that - shown at bottom of Deal Description. And so many were bought… yesterday.

All stores near me had stock at time of Deal posting. 90min later there were none left.

Hardly a lottery, but a limited clearance of out of date stock. The 50GB offer (on sticker on boxes) expired 31/3/21!

Those who arrived early had the best opportunity - like in most Deals.

      • Data on mine expires Nov 2022.

        • No the included $2 SIM expires 2022!

Read the conditions on the Data Only SIM pack - "activation required at extra cost"!
It comes with no data - "SIM pack includes SIM only & no recharge value."

Bonus 50GB Offer expired 31/3/21. These boxes had the sticker on them, but may have been removed as the offer has expired. Mine had the sticker.

Woolies staff warned before I bought.
I warned about this 32 min after Deal was posted
          But Optus may honour it.

If you have proof the 50GB is valid - please post that.

          • +1

@INFIDEL: I’m a newbie so have no idea how to post a screenshot - sorry. But mine def has 50GB credit.

            • @msjem: That's not necessary.

Where does it say 50GB is included?
Has the offer got an expiry date like the Woolies stock (31/3/21)?

Have you activated the SIM (the only certain way to know what's includedh?

As this is the main uncertainty of this Deal, it would be good to clear up.

              • +1

@INFIDEL: Oh ok. When you go to activate the sim, if you click through the steps, after you’ve selected which mobile number you want to use from their list of options, it pops up and says this sim includes 50GB of data, then the next step is selecting the plan.

                • @msjem: Thanks!👍
                  That's great! Good info.

Hopefully the Woolies ones will be the same.
I must give it a try, just not finish the activation yet. Don't need for a while.

Only 1 person who bought from Woolies has reported back that they've activated with 50GB. But Optus needed to transfer the data allowance on to a new $2 SIM. Which they could say "No" to…

                  • +1

@INFIDEL: That’s bizarre. Yeah I didn’t activate mine just yet either. But just remember to do before the 30 days is up. It says on the side of the box on mine ‘activate within 30 days of purchase or by the date advertised on a promotion’…. it was advertised with 50GB, so they need to validate that. And as for some of them having stickers? What sticker? Did yours have one? Who’s to say which ones had these alleged stickers? Mine didn’t. You bought it expecting 50GB to be included, as advertised, and included it should be. Honour thy promotion now Optus hand out ;)

                    • @msjem: The "activate within 30 days" is usual.
(That's not on my Woolies box!)

It is more to do with the possible expiry of offers. If the offer expires, you can get Optus to apply it if activated within 30 days of proof if purchase.

In the case of Woolies purchases - the offer has expired (stated on sticker on my box). But Woolies is promoting the 50GB inclusion.
                      Optus should fix any issues.

  • +1

Got the only one at Loxton. Took 3 people who work along side it all day within 2 metres to call in a 4th person to even know what I was talking about while showing them the picture from the woollies app haha

I use optus 4g for my internet so a good deal

  • Thanks for sharing OP. Glad I read the comments the data only lasts for 28 days. I was thinking of getting it for camping but not worth it if I need to keep topping it up.

  • Damn, needed 1 of these badly, anyone want to sell one in Vic, say $15 or so?
    Pm me.

None left in Vic by the looks of it.

  • There are about 6-8 left in Maleny QLD

  • Thanks got the last one @ Coffs
    ( Park ave)

  • worth nothing that I have a similar model to this from years ago and an internet outage at home - I managed to convince optus to provide me the unlock code and everything but it took a good few weeks for them to assess my request and return the code

funnily enough I waited too long before my trip to do it so had the dongle in my suitcase the whole trip to receive the code on the last day, sorry I can't be more specific with what I did to convince optus to let me unlock though

  • +2

many of us maybe mistaken "the INFIDEL" as the OP , very enthusiastic

    • OPs first time. A very good one at that!

Years ago, with a different username, I used to regularly post about SIMs & wrote a Wiki here on how to get the most from them.

I've moved on to another Deal: "FREE" Japanese Film Festival classic movies
      The Fruits of Passion 1974 R18+ b&w
"Erotic art-house fare with a political backdrop" ;-) すごい

  • Got one from Officeworks with a PBG which bought it down to $4.75. 50GB valid until Nov 2022. Happy.

    • 50GB valid until Nov 2022
Who told you that?? Hope you're right.

What colour modem is yours. Optus does have a 50GB on a black model for $99

Sticker on box from Woolies shows Bonus 50GB Offer expired 31/3/21
$2 SIM expires in 2022. It has no data

      • Says $79 on sale

        • But no one here is buying it at that price either. Its a $99 model in store.

          • @INFIDEL: Sure was just pointing out that price online 😊

            • @snappy1234: Was asking if its the same model bought at OW for $4.75 - which should include 50GB!

Woolies white model had a sticker saying the 50GB offer has expired. But the SIM card hasn't. Which creates uncertainty.

              • @INFIDEL: True- black one is newest model ZTE MF971RS
                @ $79 reduced from $99

                • @snappy1234: Unlikely OW would have PM that new model. A totally different product.

Woolies staff said these were being cleared to make way for the new model. But also warned me the bonus 50GB offer had expired - showing me the sticker on my box.

Can only activate & see. One report that Optus required a new $2 SIM to move the 50GB data over to

                  • @INFIDEL: Sorry I am somehow leading you astray- all I am talking about is your price regarding optus website nothing more nothing less.( which only refers to the new black one yeah)

                    • @snappy1234: No - that its the new ZTE modem with 50GB is interesting. Assume that's what Woolies will be stocking next.

      • Mine def has 50GB credit. I don’t know how to show proof sorry this is the first post I’ve commented on :)

        • Did you activate a sim with the woolies purchased one ?

          • @snappy1234: Because I tried earlier and website said I had to recharge- no credit given.

Will of course contact Optus and see if they will add 50gb to a $2 broadband sim as someone noted up on this post deal.

            • @snappy1234: No I got mine on PBG from OW for $4.75…. but it says on the side of the box on mine ‘activate within 30 days of purchase or by the date advertised on a promotion’…. that it includes the data so I would def contact Optus about it…… it was advertised with 50GB, so they need to validate that. And as for some of them having stickers? Did yours have one? Who’s to say? Mine didn’t. You bought it expecting 50GB to be included as advertised, and included it should be. Honour thy promotion now Optus hand out ;)

              • @msjem: Thanks again.

Yes, Woolies promote this as having 50GB, but confusingly had stickers showing the offer had expired. Some stickers had been removed as out of date.

Now 2 people who bought from Woolies have reported difficulties activating.
                Contacting Optus should work.

              • @msjem: No sticker- but info on box says
                Huawei E5577 50G Mass Modem
                Expiry Date 01 Sept 2022

                • @snappy1234: Not the sticker. Actually on the side of the yellow Optus box - small print, down bottom.

                  • @msjem: Thanks for the good, detailed info.

                    Not there on Woolies box.
It does say it's locked to Optus & fee to unlock…
I'd say the Woolies stock is quite old!

                    Lucky you PM @OW!!

                  • @msjem: Tried activating - it worked & has 50GB!!
                    As you said under Plan.

                    Will sleep well tonight💤
                    Thanks again👍

            • @snappy1234: Just entered SIM number in Opus Activation & it worked!

              4 YOUR PLAN
              Your Optus Prepaid Mobile Broadband modem includes;
              50GB Start-Up Data
All for use in Australia within 28 days. Activate within 30 days.

              I'm happy now!!

              • @INFIDEL: Tried again this morning and it offers 50gb data.
Must have had a glitch last night 😃
And before anyone says are u sure about sim number… I did check !

  • Additional stock was found at Balgowlah. Purchased one at 8.50 pm. Sticker on top of box states expiry 1/May/2022/

  • +1

Asked live chat for the unlock code and after 1.5 hours, they said it'll take 3-7 days to receive.

Want to try again tomorrow. Anyone know of a faster way?

    • +1

Comments here & in past Deals that Optus didn't send the correct codes.
You only have a limited number of attempts.

      • Even after sending in the IMEI to live chat?

I can only access the modem settings with the Optus SIM inside. Any other would show a SIM unlock page.

Unrelated, I take these "unlock code for $xx" on ebay don't work 100% of the time? Wonder if Bagman is still on here?

        • +1

Yes - they sent IMEI to live chat. Abd received wrong unlock codes. Have a search. I posted link to issue in past Deal.

I've used an Amaysim SIM with no credit to access the modems dashboard & change settings (password, APN etc)

          • @INFIDEL: Thanks for all the replies, here's hoping there is a way.

Maybe it doesn't like my Felix sim? The optus SIM will have to live in the modem until a working unlock code arrives (or something).

            • @silverrat23: There was another comment it didn't accept a Felix SIM.
(My head is full of remembered comments, but forgotten where I read them!)

              • @INFIDEL: The plot thickens, now to hunt that comment!
                Basically, I'm out of luck aren't I?

                • @silverrat23: Maybe… I'm hoping someone will post a breakthrough..

                • @silverrat23: Found that Felix comment - it was from YOU :-)

And you had asked how to change APN settings… Which didn't "unlock" the modem for me as promised.

                  So your comments are memorable!

                  • @INFIDEL: This whole time, I am the monster?!?

I'll confirm this on my end once I get a third sim (not optus nor felix).

                    • @silverrat23: Found link to previous issues with unlock code + others comments around it.

                    • @silverrat23: So, inserting a now-deactivated Amaysim Sim yields a "No service" message on the modem and "Restart your device" upon logging into the settings page in a web browser. On the other hand, an active Woolworths mobile sim (Telstra wholesale) shows a "Sim lock" message, just like the Felix one.
To answer my own question - no, the Felix sim is not the culprit.

            • @silverrat23: Yes it does work with the Felix SIM if you've unlocked the device.

              • @Dacs: Is this something you tried yourself? How did you unlock it if so?

                • +1

@silverrat23: Yes. I got one of these devices in a previous deal. Optus support couldn't/wouldn't give me the unlock code at first, but after I'd had it lying around for over a year I tried again and they gave it to me. I tried the Felix SIM (Vodafone network) which worked but was very slow as is the Optus network. I think it's because of the buildings around me. It's only the Telstra network that gives okay speeds for me.

  • Despite the uncertainty that 50GB offer had expired on 31/3/21 (shown on stickers of some modem boxes)…

Just entered SIM number in Opus Activation & it worked!
    https://www.optus.com.au/activate
    At step 4 it shows:

    4 YOUR PLAN
    Your Optus Prepaid Mobile Broadband modem includes;
    50GB Start-Up Data
All for use in Australia within 28 days. Activate within 30 days.

Others have had problem in activation.
There has been a report that Optus fixed that by using a $2 sim to transfer the data allocation onto
So contact Optus if there are issues.

    • +1

I was able to activate the 50gb with the original SIM

It did say on the packaging that 50GB has to be activated by 31/3/21 but the activation was seamless

    • What's required for activation? My dad is travelling in his van and I think this will really help us stay connected. I'd like to set it up for him. Any insight would be helpful

      • just the sim number and an ID

  • Any left in the ACT? My local (Tuggeranong) said stock available yesterday but when I went down the lady said they had none, never had any and she wished people would stop asking :-)

    • Try calling Officeworks for pricematch
      Low stock at tuggers.
But 3 other ACT stores have stock showing online.

  • DIY unlock so far looks almost impossible due to two reasons. Firstly there is no safe usb download and so the non-safe version of Balong downloader leads to wiping NVRAM. Secondly, this E5577-320 model firmware doesn't appear on the internet. I am guessing it's a customised version made for Optus.

The only plausible way is to wipe NVRAM and install firmware from other E5577 variants. While IMEI can be restored manually but no idea about what happens to radio settings.

Can anyone shed more light on how feasible this might be? Or other ways to unlock?

    • Given this Optus model has been sold for years, & there are old Deals with people trying to unlock…

And 2018 comment: even after unlocking them they are missing the 4G Band 5 for Vodafone/Kogan

Only successful way (so far) seems to pay or convince Optus to unlock.

Some chatted & Optus sent the correct unlock code, but other comments said the sent codes did not work.

Someone here claimed they changed the APN settings & that unlocked it Of course that doesn't work with a locked modem, it just adds an extra Network APN which you set as Default - tried & failed

      • Thank you for this summary. Looks like I might give it the destructive approach a go since it otherwise it heading to the landfill.

        • Worth a try.
Make sure you note the steps, in case it works! And report back.

          Good luck 👍

If it cant be unlocked, mine will be used with Optus resellers SIMs like Amaysim. Amaysim SIM in it now.

          • @INFIDEL: Bugger I didn't get very far with this. Turned out I didn't even have the torx screwdriver to disassemble it. The size is quite small so I suspect only people in the phone repair trade might have it.

            • @CoronavirusVaccine: Its a long time since I've worked on mobile phone hardware. Found my torx screwdrivers - smallest one is a T2 - too big!

Overseas I needed to fix an older phone which went for a swim… Talked to mobile repair booth by the beach & used their tools free. Brought the washed & dried phone back next day, reassembled - worked!

as an ex chinese national i'm happy to pass anything from huawei, thank you for looking out for every citizen in the world, but no thanks

  • Anyone unlocked it successfully?

  • Be prepared to spend over 2 hours and visiting a store to have the sim replaced and activated.

      • The both the live chat and in store optus rep told me a new sim wouldn’t do the trick. I have escalate it to TIO.

        • Unfortunate you had a very different experience.

Most times if a SIM can't be activated, swapping to a new SIM in store & adding the same service by the provider solves the problem. Which seems what Optus finally did.

Done it with other Telcos many times. Used to be a problem with Telstra SIM starter packs - the included number was reused by Telstra before the expiry date… So the SIM couldn't be activated. A lot of hassles.

Can't be done online. But have found some staff in store don't want to spend their time (not making a sale & dealing with the hassle). They & manager just find excuses. So best done in a corporate owned store.

I just knocked off a dummy battery for one of these modems.

Now I can use it in my car or trailer connected to the secondary battery without the fear of the battery swelling or exploding due to heat.

I'm currently using the Optus credit so I can later get the unlock code to use it with Telstra and share my data. If it works well I may even ditch the horrible fttn broadband that I have at home.

The good thing is that using a dummy battery basically leaves the unit untouched (other than a small cut on the battery cover) so I can just stick the battery in it and use it.

It would be an OK solution for a remote time lapse machine but it wouldn't be great if it needs a restart.

My dummy battery doesn't look fantastic but it does work.

    • It uses under 1 amp for a full day of being on with three devices connected to it.

      I'm happy with that.

    • Wouldn't it have been easier just to plug a power bank into it?

      • +1

But then the battery would expand to potentially dangerous levels, given the set-and-forget nature of this modem.

Rigging a dummy battery resolves that issue by tricking it into thinking it has one, only to be hardwired, which easier to regulate.

        • Ah right - fair enough.

      • +1

Yeah it would have been easier. But not safer.

        As stated by silverrat23

The batteries in these type of modems can't handle contact trickle charger for long periods. The BMS in them is not that good so then they swell and may even catch fire.

        https://www.rvmobileinternet.com/guides/preventing-mobile-ho…

        https://yescrowd.optus.com.au/t5/WiFi/Mobile-wifi-losing-bat…

Also, connecting a power bank means that the power bank would need to be left in the car and recharge often.

The dummy battery method allows this to be ran from either the vehicle main battery as the current use is very low (it would take months without running the car for the battery to be affected) or a secondary battery in the car of a camper, trailer, motorhome, usually those setups also have solar panels that to up the "house" battery.

I ran mine non stop for over a week with no issues, until I used all the data inclusion.

  • Didn't realise I had to activate within a month to get the 50Gb.. if anyone missed out and wants to buy the one I bought and ok to pay postage, PM me.

    • +1

You don't need to activate within a month. You have until the expiry date on the packaging.

    • Decided to keep it.
