  • Does this play all video file formats?
Does it allow you to sync the audio and video manually?

I bought this asus one 2 years ago and it couldn't play half my video collection.
    http://www.bttech.com.au/asus-oplay-hdpr1-media-player-p-105…

Does anybody know a media player that plays all video formats?
Only if you can get VLC player built into a media player some how.

Unfortunately no stand-alone player can play ALL formats, simply because formats are updated all the time. Some play most common formats, but then some idiot makes a new encoding format or container that breaks new files. For example Matroska .MKV files are horrible things, sometimes they don't even play on the computer properly unless you install a special player, and it once took me two hours to change a simple spelling mistake in one of the embedded subtitles. They went to a lot of trouble to design a truly tedious incompatible format with no decent graphic interface, so you need to use the command line to do anything more than basic manipulation.

The only way to truly future-proof yourself with video formats is to build a HTPC (Home Theatre PC) which is basically just a small computer. It will play anything that will run on a normal computer. Trouble is, you're looking at $300-$400 minimum, which is a heck of a lot more than $99 for an Astone, and it's not as portable. I carry my Astone box everywhere so I can watch movies at my friend's house, it's the same size as an external hard drive. I wouldn't do that with a HTPC.

I've seen the Astone AP-300 box selling for $59 before, it's just as good as the MP-310DT only without the (nearly worthless) TV tuner. The MP-310DT's PVR is terrible. Bad interface, bad software, unreliable, very poor episode guide. YouTube support is terrible. Web browser can't do Flash or Java so 80% or websites don't work. It's not worth the extra money. The AP-360 sometimes sells for $69-89, the tuner is bad but gets the job done if you fiddle with it a bit. Giga-E and USB 3 might be worth the extra $10, but if you want a bargain get the one of the cheaper boxes.

I extensively used three Astone boxes (AP-300, AP-360T, MP-310DT) and they all play almost everything I can throw at them, except for the new format variable-frame-rate MKV files - these horrible files don't play on anything I've found, and even have trouble playing on my desktop computer. I have to convert them to something else before playing them.

Astone software DOES NOT allow manual audio/video sync, but allows subtitle sync.

      • Thanks you for your detailed response.

      • thanks for your response, it's really detailed and gets to the point!

Thanks for the through information. I don't care about web or Flash on the device, but could you tell a bit more about the TV tuner. I am looking at something that could also replace my set top box as well as work as a media player. So, how bad is it? Surely it supports the free-to-air EPG and recording from it? Does it have timeshift feature, pausing live TV? Does it allow skipping forwards or backwards in, say, 30sec bits? How is the remote?

        • +1

The tuner can only record up to 8 things at a time, so it's not even enough to record all the Formula 1 programs over this weekend. Episode guide doesn't show full descriptions, so it's nearly impossible to see what you're actually recording. The name isn't recorded with the recording, so you just get a generic 'ONE_20120316_1050.ts' and have to figure out what it is by fast-forward/rewinding. Despite being dual tuner, you can't watch two channels at once. You have to switch to a channel to view the episode guide or record for that channel, you can't just browse other programs while watching one TV show.

Episode guide can only view 6 days in advance, so even though it's Friday today, I can't automatically record a program that's playing next Friday from the episode guide. The only way to record something next Friday is to manually set a recording, which is tedious. The manual SAYS 7 day guide, but that includes today.

As a media box though, it's great. As good as any others. Good subtitle and audio support. The remote has a nice feel. It's easy to fast-forward and rewind. Cabled networking is very good, I have two boxes hooked up in different rooms and can watch the recordings from one box on the other, and also watch things from my networked laptop. The MP-310DT has a networking server built-in, so I can actually access the hard disk from my laptop or the other Astone boxes. It even allows me to watch a movie on the MP-310DT and connect via another media box in a different room, so my wife and I can both watch different movies or TV shows off the same internal hard disk. That functionality is fantastic. I hear the wireless dongle support isn't very good, but haven't played with it enough to have any useful comments. I can seamlessly connect to the MP-310DT and play movies via wireless on my Android tablet, but the media player is connected to a dedicated wireless router via Ethernet.

Have a look at the MP-310DT forum, it might help answer other specific questions:
          http://www.astone.com.au/forum/viewforum.php?f=27

        • i bought one last year, and i agree about the pvr functions, this hardware is the same as the Playon hd and the tv tuner is an addon daughterboard, and i gotta say, the software feels like it's been 'tacked' on as well! above issues + others, like recording can stop anytime you do something else, and when it's playing a file and a schedule comes up it will stop playback, even though it can still play & record simultaneously! it's a good media play with the tuner functions tacked on hastily
re wireless dongle, it should work with any Realtek based adaptor, i bought one from ebay a while back and it works fine, keep in mind browser is basic, helps if you have a wireless keyboard too

        • Sorry Jakentta, I just realised I skipped part of your question:
Yes, it is easy to skip forward or back 30 seconds. You press left or right then press enter. Press twice or four times for two minutes from memory. The AP-360 has dedicated buttons to skip forward 30 seconds, but the MP-310DT does it slightly different. Takes getting used to, but it's easy enough.
The timeshift feature is awful - you have to remember to turn it on before it works!! The only time I usually want to use time shift is after I just missed something on TV and want to go back 30 seconds. With this box, it's too late already.
Can't record two TV shows at the same time, but can watch one and record another.
Playback of TV shows stops when a new recording begins, which makes no sense. You can start playback again once thre recording has actually started, but it always stops when the recording starts. Annoying.
Free to air episode guide support is nasty. Just nasty. It does support recording direct from EPG but you can't reliably tell it to schedule to record 10-15 minutes before or after the show, so you always miss the end with commercial stations.
Remote has a nice feel and easy access to audio/subtitle settings.
The AP-360 has a go-to feature so you can jump direct to 1hour 37 minutes in a movie if you want to, but the MP-310DT doesn't appear to have this, so you have to scan forward. Scanning is quite fast though so it's not such an issue.
The box remembers the time you pressed Stop, so you can easily resume playing a movie where you left off.
History feature remembers the last 20 or so items you watched on the hard disk, but doesn't remember this for network shared files, so if you have a separate network movie server you have to find the files manually each time. You can set a 'Favourite' though to go direct to the network share folder, and it still resumes playback where you left off.

      • I totally agree, I purchased one and tried it out and ended up returning it as my wife needed a Dual PVR function and this unit did not live up to this feature! The specs on paper seem great, however in reality PVR is terrible, software and user interface is not great, Web is bad, however a a media player codec support appears to be good.

    • Popcorn Hour plays ALL formats. However it costs a lot, and you need to upgrade every once in a while.

  • Wayyy too much text on that page.
No one is going to read all of that, they will just lose interest

    • If it was in a table then I would read all of it.

    • +1

      Agreed.

      Definitely wayyyyy too much text.

Need to shorted it down OP

  • I have the astone ap-110, love that thing! I will definitely be up for 1 maybe 2 of these.

    Thanks!

  • Can I hook it to foxtel box and record foxtel channels?

    • No you can't - the MP-310DT only has a TV tuner, but no AV-in.

You need the AP-360T to record Foxtel. In my opinion it's a much better box. It doesn't have the USB 3, Giga-E or web browser, but lacking those 'features' don't affect its role as a movie player/recorder.

  • How much is the WiFi Dongle for this so I can connect to my WiFi at home?

  • Really want to neg because of the horrible page of words in the "description". Don't think im allowed to though :(

  • I have an astone ap-110,more and more file format can't be played now.

  • Way too much in that description!
