  • How many devices can it connect to concurrently?

    • +2

      Hey,

The Conbee website states that there is no limit to the number of devices you can add - theoretically you could have up to 65,000 (according to the Zigbee alliance standards). In terms of what we have tested, we have gone up to 80 nodes and not had any issues.

    • deCONZ (software) title screen says "Limited to max 512 network nodes".
Not sure if it is about software itself or hardware.

  • Does this work with Clipsal Wiser Switches?

    • Hi,

I cannot say with certainty as we haven't tested with Clipsal Wiser - but this reddit post seems to suggest they work:

      https://www.reddit.com/r/homeassistant/comments/ogo599/clips…

      • +6

As the OP of that Reddit post. It does work but is a little buggy.

        • As the OP of that thread, what did using them allow you to do and how much did it cost?

          • @kulprit: I have the Conbee II running on Home Assistant and the stick is really good and works well with all my other ZigBee products. The wiser switches have a few bugs, but there are work arounds.

I'm not sure what you're exactly after. The iconic wiser switches were about 90-120 each, the rasp pi for home assistant was 140ish as a complete package.

I have the switches set up to turn on with Google assistant and some basic automations such as turning some on when my roborock S6MaxV is running.

            • @Sanny: I want to add smarts and dimmers to every light in my house, but keep a push button light switch. Currently have normal Clipsal iconic switches.

              • @kulprit: That's pretty much exactly what I did and it works fairly well.

The dimmers can be an issue if you only have a low load on them (ie only one downlight) as they won't turn on if the dimmer is set to a low dim, so you have to increase the brightness first.

The switches all emit a light high pitched buzzing noise which is apparent when you're next to the switch. I used to have the 3A Nue switches in my old house which didn't have any of these issues and honestly worked better at 1/3 the cost but they didn't look as nice.

                • -1

@Sanny: Sounds like with the humming etc the tech still isn't ready. will wait another year and see how we go.. Thanks for the info

                  • @kulprit: You could alternatively get some basic push mechs and put some Shelley's in behind them, but that won't give you the backlight feedback.

                    • @Sanny: Shelley dimmers are wifi though? Trying to avoid having it on wifi.

Then the other option is fibaro, but they are too expensive.

            • @Sanny: @sanny - did you get through an electrical wholesaler?

              • @nekoakuma: MJS had them the cheapest from memory.

  • Keen to move my heavily xiaomi/yeelight-integrated home toward something agnostic and local. This might be the go for me… Tried moving over to Home Assistant (still relying on the xiaomi hub) but it was a bit of a PITA.

Anything I need to consider if I'm looking at removing the Xiaomi hub from my setup and running a bunch of button switches and yeelights through this?

    • I run Xioami switches/sensors and Lifx lights through mine with zero issues.

      • Sweet thanks. Are you running yours through a pi, or…?

        • +1

Yep. Pi4, running HA in Docker

      • +1

What am I talking about with Lifx? they're wifi and don't go thru the Conbee. What an idiot >.< LOL

        • +1

Yeah but I’m doing the same thing. HA controls the LIFX lights over wifi after receiving the button press over Zigbee from the ConBee.

          • @steve-oz: Yeah same but I didn't want to give the impression that the Conbee can control the Lifx locally. :)

    • +3

The main thing to consider when using a Conbee II is what platform you will run on - Home Assistant, OpenHAB, Windows computer with DeConz etc. The main driver behind this is how you want to set up automations - Home Assistant is great for automations with the new GUI. DeConz on Windows is a breeze to set up (just install a program) but automations aren't as flexible, and your PC would need to be powered on all the time.

  • Wowsers, that's a great price!

  • +3

Good price, though for Home Assistant the new Amber is looking pretty good with built in Zigbee

  • Thanks OP, bought 1. Cheers

  • Hey OP - I have some Zemismart blinds that use RF 915mhz - do you have any hubs that work with them (ie that frequency) The Sonoff hub (433mhz) of course won't talk to them.

    • +1

Apologies, not aware of any hubs that can repeat 915mhz.

If you really want to automate, you could consider wiring a Shelly Uni into the remote that you currently use (across the buttons), and basically replicate those button pushes. May require soldering though.

    • +1

      Check this
      http://www.rflink.nl/blog2/devlist

“ Technically, RFLink is capable of using 315, 433, 868 and 915 mhz frequencies with the protocols and devices listed below.”

Sometimes it is the protocol the device uses to communicate rather than the device name itself.

      • Thanks. I will look through this in detail. The issue is the hardware, rather than software. I’m surprised because it appears 915mhz is used in the US, so should have hardware & software available.

  • If I'm using Alexa as the core of my home automation, is there a simple way to get this to work with it? I'm currently having issues with a Xiaomi ZigBee door switch going through the Xiaomi hub / mi home and not having it's status show up properly in Alexa to trigger routines. Also my Xiaomi ZigBee movement sensors only seem to pass through "movement" signals, not "no movement detected for X minutes"

    • Alternatively if anyone has had any luck getting Xiaomi ZigBee devices to pair with an echo plus (which has ZigBee built in) I'd be interested to know how :)

      • +1

Conbee II wont work directly with Alexa - but if you get Home Assistant running, you can run your Zigbee network on Home Assistant using the Conbee II. Home Assistant will then integrate into Alexa giving you control through the Alexa app and via voice.

  • I really like the idea of something like this but everything I have running through the Xiaomi Home app and hub (lights, switches, vacuum, temp sensor) are all working fine. Am I just opening up a can of worms for little gain to get started with this?

    • +8

If it ain't broke, don't fix it! The only benefit I see for you for moving to a Conbee II is fully local control with no cloud.

      • Thanks, that's what I thought.

      • Plus 1 to the rep for honesty and integrity!

The other reason you might want to do it in the future is if you ever want to mix and match automations across ecosystems (eg if you get some Tuya devices (such as Arlec Grid Connect, Deta lights, MIrabella etc)). Not all the Xiaomi switches work seamlessly with the Conbee either, so if you were to swap over some of your devices might be redundant.

  • Hmmm…
I can't decide if I need another one to setup RPi with 2nd stick in a place which is too far from the 1st stick to reach.
There is no place to put "extender" in between but I have network there over powerlines.
Or I can still try to extend my Zigbee network even if there is way to install two devices within a direct line of sight and too much brick in between.

    • A powered Zigbee device would be preferred to act as a repeater.

But if this is not possible, you can create a second Zigbee network with another Conbee. On the second Raspberry Pi, you can use Zigbee to MQTT to send data to the first Pi.

      • Yep, the second network is what I was thinking about.

  • Does anyone know if you can add a 2nd Conbee device to the existing network of the first one and the zigbee devices just connect to whatever one is stronger? or do you have to setup a whole 2nd conbee network? then do you get interference? Or are they smart enough not to overlap.

    • Why would you connect a 2nd conbee device to the same network?

    • Get a Zigbee lightbulb or outlet so that it uses it as a "router", and extends the range of your mesh network. Battery devices don't operate as routers since that would drain their battery.

    • +1

I don't think it can be added to the same network. I would recommend adding Zigbee extenders (powered devices) to strengthen your network.

    • +3

IKEA signal repeater will connect to your exsisting conbee and extend the network for you.

My advice for anyone looking to start out with Home Assistant is to get an old laptop/tablet INSTEAD of a Pi. Will possibly be the same cost but will give you MUCH easier ways to backup/image your virtual machine especially if you are trying out new configurations. A Rasperry Pi using SD cards is a disaster waiting to happen. You have your whole house dependent on a SD card that could corrupt very easily and is a hassle to backup (not difficult but used to take me about 40mins to clone a 32gb card). You then have to find IDENTICAL cards to flash the backup onto noting that SD cards have slight differences in actual capacities between brands and even batches of the same brand.

I'm now using an old Surface Pro 3 and a virtual machine and it works great - even on Windows!

    • +4

Nah, cloning a card on etcher literally take minutes. And if you don't like micro sd then get a ssd. If you dont have existing low power device and have to buy one the pi4 is cheapest both in short and long term. Old laptop or pc still chew through energy at least 5 times the pi. I've been running on micro sd for over 2 years without issues. Only time i had problem was setting up causing 1 card to die.

    • +1

My Pi is running on an SSD and HA backs itself up at least once a day to Google drive. A full restore takes about 10 minutes.

You can even get cases where you can install the SSD and the RPi inside, instead of SSD external on a cable like I have.

But if you have an old Surface lying around, it make sense.

  • Yup, what's the maximum number of devices that it can handle simultaneously?

Also, what about windows 11 support?

      • As above for the device limits, in theory there isn't really a limit that Dresden have placed on the number of devices.

We will test on Windows 11 soon, but I don't think there should be any issues with compatibility between Windows 10/11 apps more generally.

  • -2

Every device gonna be supporting matter tho…..

  • this vs a flashed Sonoff argh… I do like the fact that the sonoff doesn't require a direct USB connection, though…

    • +1

      This.

    • +2

This. I had the sonoff, but the lag was annoying. I've since moved to a tubeZB ethernet based hub now so I could relocate my server

  • Hi. Very novice question. Once it's setup could you plug it into a usb slot somewhere (e.g. router) to be the power source and would it work ir does it only work when plugged into a pc

    • +1

It's not a standalone hub so needs to stay connected to a PC or RPi

  • Just reading that synology removed the ability to use these in DSM7. That's a bit annoying.

    • This is what I've just been looking into too. Looks like some have managed a work around, but not sure how long it'll work for.

Tossing up whether to get one anyway to test out as my system is a mess with multiple apps and just bought a zigbee hub for devices that won't connect to SmartThings - maybe this one dongle could have solved all of that, and get me off the cloud…?

      • Doesn't Smartthings support quite a lot of Zigbee devices already? If it's not supported then what's the chance it would be supported on Home assistant?

        • Some, yes, but not all - in particular the more generic devices (and cheaper) devices from China. While you can add some via the SmartThings backend, getting working config files for the specific device has proven more of a headache than it's worth.

I'm using the Tuya/SmartLife app for wifi devices already, so have ordered a zigbee hub that will connect to that so I can add non-SmartThings supported zigbee devices. I know it's all a bit of a mess, but I haven't been able to find a better way of doing everything yet.

    • I’m staying on DSM 6 for now, but this is encouraging
      https://mariushosting.com/synology-how-to-add-usb-support-on…

    • +1

Get a ethernet or wifi based hub instead? I mentioned in another comment I tried the wifi sonoff one which worked, but there was some definite lag for me (60 ish devices). I'm now running a tubeZB ethernet hub and couldn't be happier. It did cost a bit more though

      • Know you could get an ethernt ZigBee hub. Thanks, will keep an eye out.

    • Is this for Docker based installs? Seems to be working on my VM that is running under DSM7.

  • Hi,
I have a sonoff zigbee bridge, flashed with Tasmota. I also have a xiaomi vibration sensor in my mailbox which about 10m away from the zigbee bridge. The sensor has RSSI arround -91 to -94. After 1 day the sensor will become unavailable.
Will conbee ii stick has a stonger signal than sonoff zigbee bridge?

    • I have the Xiaomi aqara vibration sensor running on deconz with the combee ii and it also goes unavailable at regular times .. it's probably 5 Meters from the combee… I have about 30 other aqara devices and they are all fine .. I have read the vibration sensor is unrealable on the HA forum…

      • I actually have 2 xiaomi vibration sensors. Only the sensor in my mailbox that goes unavailable on the next day.

  • Does/will this work with Thread and Matter?

  • What are the other options for zigbee hubs or is this it? I need something to run my Lockwood/Yale locks at some stage, when to checked that ad the OP had posted soemthing that was only 20 bucks from memory and said it worked fine.

    • Other options are a Sonoff bridge flashed with Tasmota, Aeotec Smartthings, or Hubitat.

Sonoff also do Zigbee sticks similar to Conbee but signal strength is weaker and there are device limits.

      • Sonoff released their 'plus' cc2652-based USB dongle a few weeks back, which should be significantly more powerful than their older cc2531-based sticks and priced at $10usd .. ~$20aud delivered.

        • Sounds like a deal, where do I get one?

          • @Jackson: I picked one up last week from this link which seems to be the official source on Sonoff's website. They're sold out until mid-October though.

            • @horsey: Thanks! Like a good ozbargainer, there's no rush

  • OP - I’m looking for a battery operated light sensor that I would use to trigger my blinds through Home Assistant - I assume RF is going to be best for battery life. I can’t see anything on your site, but do you have anything like that?

There are no PowerPoints near the blinds, hence battery.

  • I have a mix of Xiaomi and aqara devices running on 2 Xiaomi hubs. Will this conbee 2 run all the Xiaomi devices or only some of them? I would love to get rid of the mi home app and calling back to China.

    • I have found not all the Xiaomi switches work seamlessly with the Conbee, so if you were to swap over some of your devices might be redundant, and others require a bit of forum hunting with copy/paste of code. Also if you have 2 hubs then you might need to also get some type of Zigbee range repeater/extender (eg Ikea Tradfri $20) to take the place of one of the hubs.

      • Thanks for the reply.

  • Just realised I could have this with deconz on a separate Pi to my HA install so ordered one! Thanks OP and everyone else giving advice :)

  • Whats a good zwave USB?

Finding all the things I want now only come in zwave, really annoying.

    • +1

so far Aeotec reliable for me, never ever have issue since day one. 2 years running

      • +1

Zwave.me is working well with a couple of Fibaro switches and Aeotec sensors, etc for me

  • hey OP, can you send to parcel locker address?

  • Hey ozbargainers,

Thank you so much for your support and really glad you like the deal. Unfortunately we have sold out of this batch. We are happy to continue this deal and anyone ordering from 13:00 Sydney time on 09/10/2021 will have a delayed delivery date. Anyone ordering after this date will see about a 10 day delay.

    • Is the price back to normal?
      Can't see $10 off.

      • +1

Hey, we actually ran out due to really high demand so to avoid selling out of our next shipment as well, we had to put the price back up. However, specifically for any OzBargainers that did miss out, we are more than happy to honour the deal and do a discount code - please just email us on [email protected] and we can arrange that.

        • Emailed you guys but got no response. Are you still able to offer this deal?

  • So is anyone else experiencing phantom button presses with the older Hue Dimmer Switches and this with Phoscon? I’ve reset the conbee, reset the switches, rebuilt the zigbee network from scratch, tried on a windows host instead of a container, and gone back several versions…. I’m beginning to pull my hair out

  • +1

Bummer ordered one last week at full price haha
