Using Sick Leave

I get 2 weeks of sick leave every year but never got sick for the past two years. Meanwhile everyone else has taken tons of time off for 'being sick'.

Does everyone else fake it and should I as well?

your body's past performance does not indicate future performance.. unused sick leave should also accumulate

If annual leave is enough time away from work for you, I'd keep it in the bank for a rainy day

    • Yes use sick leave like an insurance. You will never know when you may need it. If you would really need it, you should have enough for that time or it would be really bad not being paid during the time you're actually really sick.

    • Sick leave resets after every year, doesn't it? I know for sure it doesn't get paid to you if you don't use it and end up leaving the company.

Chuck a sickie mate she'll be right.

  • Does everyone else fake it

    Some people do, not everyone.

    and should I as well?

    Depends.

If you do, don’t be like the people who post on Facebook enjoying the day at the beach or some “not sick” activity, it may get you fired.

If you want to take the moral high ground, then no, don’t do it.

I had five year's worth of sick leave accrued and then all of a sudden I got sick and needed it all in one go. I was pretty glad I had it!

Nowadays, it's called Personal Leave and plenty of people use it as "mental health" days or for carer's leave, etc. Don't have to be physically sick to use it.

    • Mental health days are so incredibly important for so many people. It’s really good personal leave can be used for this now, and if anyone reading ever needs to, please use it.

Please also know that (in Victoria at least) an employer, manager, HR or anyone else is not allowed to ask why you are taking personal leave. They may require a certificate, they may not, but either way, they do not need any further information.

    • I had ten years worth of accrued sick leave, then got laid off at the start of the Covid outbreak and lost it all. 😟.

      • It's not necessarily a bad thing because, while you may be "Ugly", having that much sick leave would mean that you've probably got good health AND you still got a decent redundancy package! 😜

I'd happily trade you for that! haha

    • Was in the same boat, had loads of sick leave after years in the same place despite the occasional sickie, never thought I'd use it all. Loved one fell terminally ill, was able to use it all across two months of carer's leave + a little annual leave. A real blessing, considering no-pay leave would have indebted financially considering the medical expenses on the other front.

Now slowly earning it back, always plan to have at least a month in the kitty.

Isn’t the general rule of thumb 1 sick day no doc note required. 2 sick days doc note required? If so just take a day for mental health.

    • Very standard for one day no cert required, unless on Monday or Friday.

BUT… it is entirely up to your contract (or EB agreement). I know a few companies that require certificates for even part days.

  • No.

  • Personal choice. Moral issue and a bit of a health gamble.
A mental health day or just a day to catch up on sleep. Sure. Once.
You could break your neck and need 6 weeks off work so I think it is very short sighted to use it all up.

  • You're probably a carrier OP and just spreading the germs by coming in when you shouldn't.

I just use mine for vax recovery.

  • you could just take a sickefor mental stress i guess

From my observation some people use it all the time. Others say they never get sick then boom karma hits after 10 years and they have heart surgery and chew thru 6 months.

Haha not fair to say karma. But yes, if you have a serious health issue and you have months of sick leave backed up it helps so much.

  • Doona day… = sick day.

I'd been in hospital in my current role and still worked, nurses took my phone and PC away for a couple of hours.
Had never take sick days, even when I'm advised to. I know - stupid. Then with COVID and all the drama that unfolded, I used a couple of weeks (burnout). 🤦‍♂️

So, if you have it and you need to use it - USE IT! That's what it's there for…

  • Some ppl take a self-diagnosed mental health sick day (or two) to deal with their home life, personal life, or work life.

    Everyone including the employer benefits.

    Hey abcdef abcdefg

I was in contact with your boss, ghijkl ghijklm.

Make sure you don't chuck a sickie next week or I'll let them know.

  • My boss always takes leave, nearly 1-2 days every week and he never puts in any paperwork. I'm sure it happens across industries, so don't feel bad about taking a "sickie"

    • So he's essentially working 0.6 FTE?

I knew people who would work an hour extra every day and accumulate it so they could have a day off a fortnight. That was shut down very quickly.

  • Best time to take a sickie is when a AAA title drops.

It is a mental health day and we all need one in the pandemic.

I would say i have taken less time off and had less sick days (because of WFH) than ever before. I'm certainly gearing up to take 2 months off in Dec/Jan tho!

  • Yes you need to fake it just like other team members. Otherwise you are not team person.
And no your manager wont like you either.
Everyone should fake and take sickies

  • I've only taken 2 sick days in 4 yrs… but I think its time to start using them up

  • I got to use 7 days of sick leave when I went and got my eyes lasered. Unsure how elective surgery allowed me to do that, but I definitely wasn't complaining.

If you're feeling a bit stressed in the future just have a "mental health day". Isn't it Aussie culture to chuck a sickie every now and then?

  • I take sick leave when I'm sick. That could just be a mental health day or because I have a bad headache or sore back. It's like doing maintenance rather than waiting for something to break.

edit: I do have 200+ days available after 13 years in the same company

  • I wish I did. Because where I worked was very physical, my health related issues (my back mainly, which I had to see a specialist for) ate through my sick leaves and to annual leaves.

  • I used to when I was younger. Every few months I'd take a couple of days off sick. It was mostly because I didn't enjoy what I was doing, there wasn't enough to do and my boss was a bit of ****. Once I started a job that was challenging and that I found stimulating, I found I didn't want or need random days off. My bosses were also cool enough for me to take a day off if needed and not clock it as Annual Leave or Sick Leave because I worked extra hours all the time. When I left my last job I left with several months worth of Sick Leave which didn't pay out.

  • It's an implicit understanding that sick days can be used at your own convenience. You don't need to be sick per se - this is subjective anyway. Some people get covid and spend weeks in hospital, I got it and continued to WFH and work out indoors. Everyone's body is different.

If you're feeling stressed out or mentally burned, take a sick day. If there's too much on your mind and you don't feel like working, that's an acceptable sick day too. It's not just about temperatures or a runny nose.
