It's better not to specify something as being "for your Nintendo Switch" when it can get bricked by using non-ideal pd

    https://www.chargerlab.com/the-reasons-behind-the-nintendo-s…
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6INIHrZBGg

The second link is pretty much an ad for a 'good' mini dock but they're at least testing it specifically for the switch and looking into what is bricking the system

    • seems the only way to guarantee not bricking is to use or modify the nintendo dock.
i've been waiting for a decent price on one of the re-shell kits to mod mine into a mini dock.

    • Haven't seen any reports on this causing bricking.

Aten is a reputable brand btw

      • yeah i ended up buying one after doing a bit more digging.

on the aten website they have a lot of images that look like a switch but aren't, perhaps due to copywrite.
they do specifically mention the switch quite a lot, and they have youtube videos on the aten youtube with it working.

the fact that it is firmware updateable is promising too.

I've used it with switch, it doesn't brick.

      • thanks for confirming - assume you had to do the update first?

        • Yes, it's pretty simple though

  • This product will require a firmware upgrade to function correctly which can be found on the manufaturers website: www.aten.com/au/en/products/usb-&-thunderbolt/docking-statio…

    Fine print.

    • Yep seems like it should work safely with the Nintendo switch:

      • For USB-C game console users, please update UH3235 to the latest firmware.

All you have to do is connect it to a PC and follow the instruction manual. Easy

    HDMI 1.4 @ 30hz, no thanks.

Underrated comment. 4K30 on a computer is just awful.

      • while i agree with this sentiment AND given you have by Blitzwolf and other 4k/60 units for not much more, the reality is I'm running 1,440p on a 4k28 and 4k32 panel simply because I find 4k to be too small and 1,440p is really good enough for me.

        Its $20. There's a reason why its $20.

The scaling options in Mac are good and even Windows 10 is decent these days, so you shouldn’t have to run lower resolutions. In any case, non-native res on LCDs look janky. I run my portrait UHD 28-inch second display in “looks like” mode that’s roughly 3000x1700 (cant remember the exact figures) for that extra bit of size to match the size on my 32-inch display (at regular UHD res) on my Mac.

The problem with these products is they try to over deliver by doing 4K, but only at 30 hertz. As you note, if you actually want 4K, 4K60 options aren’t much more.

You spent the money on a 4K display, spend a few dollars more and get one that does 4K 60 hertz, no reason to settle for this sort of half-assed compromise.

I can confirm that this works with the Nintendo Switch. Definitely good at the price and extremely portable. It doesn't brick it luckily 😅
