Sunbeam Grindfresh Coffee Burr Grinder EM0440 $79.20 Delivered @ Myer

160

Saw this reduction on this grinder.
I can't give my opinion on how good it is but for the price it is probably one of the cheapest electrical conical burr grinders you will get.

  • Seems it's not good for fine/espresso grinds; https://www.choice.com.au/products/home-and-living/kitchen/c…

most grinders at this price point wont be.
but probably good enough for Aeropress, French Press etc.
Might also be okay for pressurized baskets.

      • but probably good enough for Aeropress, French Press

100% - Will cause nothing but inconsistency and frustration for espresso or siphon.

But fine for Aeropress/Delta Press/French press et al. I have one at the office which a few of us use (errr…when not stuck at home) for Delta Press brews.

I don't have this problem with my espresso to be honest.

Are you using a pressurised (double wall) basket?

        • yes

          • @OhPee: That is likely why it works for you. Double wall baskets are looked down upon by espresso enthusiasts, partly because they don't require fine enough grinding.

    • +1

I used to have this (years ago) and it could easily "choke" standard baskets at the finest settings. Unless they've downgraded the quality i'd expect it to do the same now.

A no brainer for anyone buying pre-ground coffee.

I've used mine for 6 years at work. Can't fault it. Can easily grind to the point of being too fine. Also have a Delonghi grinder at home. Cant see the difference.

  • I have this, it grinds well enough and if you want to grind a batch at a time into the storage container that comes with then it will be fine. But if you want to grind fresh to your basket then there is a lot of mess. So much mesh. All they had to do was make a shroud around the portafilter rest.

    • +2

I've seen people buy a 3d printed one for your specific portafilter on etsy

      • Going to look

Just grind into a stainless steel dosing cup. 100% mess-free.

      • Put the grinds back into a 250g coffee bean bag. Makes it super easy to pour into basket.

        • 🤣

        • just grind into the group handle, the little bucket thing can go in the bin ;)

Use this for cold brew, it's ok nothing fancy.
Got it when sunbeam had a half price sale many moons ago.

If you want this for espresso I would recommend steering clear and picking up a Smart Grinder Pro instead. I bought this about 6 months ago to pair with my De'Longhi Dedica and unpressurised basket and the results were terrible. Only after tinkering around to add a couple of spacers under the burrs could I achieve a fine enough grind and even then it was still inconsistent and not worth the mucking around.

I still use it today and it is perfect for cold brew. Just this morning I had an issue where it randomly stopped grinding half way through and I could only get it to continue by cleaning the beans out and putting everything back together.

    TLDR:
    Good for cold brew.
For espresso if you want something that just works then get something better. However, if you are keen to tinker and on a budget then maybe.. just maybe this might suit your needs?

    • I am going home to tinker

    • Yeah mine is dying a slow death too, don't think they're built well

    • I totally agree with you. I have this and use for cold brew. Not recommend for espresso at all.

  • I got this, it does the job, but it makes a hell of a mess.

  • I have this grinder as well and have tried 2 different espresso coffee machines - EM6910 and BES840XL.
I can only use this grinder with pressurised (dual wall) baskets.
I have tried with really fresh beans and on finest grind setting, and I cannot get a drinkable coffee (I drink flat whites).
Using this grinder with pressurised (dual wall) baskets give a decent enough coffee, and I have been using it this way for years.

I want to try shimming the burrs, but worried I will stuff it up and end up with no grinder.
This comes up on Amazon for $80 regularly, so its not a massive bargain, but I'd say it is a good deal if you are only planning to use it for pressurised (dual wall) baskets .

I am waiting on the smart grinder pro to approach the $200 price before I make the upgrade, but even the dose control grinder at $199 right now would be a better option if you can't stretch to the smart grinder price.

    • sad to say Breville price increase has hit Australia, it's going to be a massive sale to see the SGP hit $200. and i don't think we will see it sub $200 ever again.

    • +1

Yeah don't mess with it, mines not quite the same after I tinkered with it.

    • $249 on TGG Commercial site at the moment FYI

      • I almost went for it on TGG Commercial when it was $215, but I have some JB HiFi vouchers I want to use for the purchase, and holding off until I can find a seller I can price match. I assumed they wouldn't price match TGG Commercial…

  • Extremely messy, grinds flies everywhere over the counter top. The push activation "button" is too far away from the spout and by the time the grinds gets to the basket the excess grinds is already all over your benchtop.
I do not recommend this grinder unless you want to add clean up grinds from benchtop after making coffee as another step?

  • Can this be used as a spice grinder?

    • +1

Yes, I bought this model exactly for that. Peppercorns, mustard seeds, fenugreek, coriander seeds all work great. Although I do find pink/rock salt powderises even at the coarsest setting. Hope this info helps.

    • +1

Expensive and impractical for that purpose, as it's a bigger, standing unit with a spout instead of a smaller grinder with a simple chamber. Unless you're grinding industrial amounts.

      • +1

It works extremely well however, Ive used mine to grind up toasted rice and it was fantastic and consistent.

      • To be honest I have not found a powerful spice grinder yet in Australia. The Breville spice grinder just dies after some time, same with Sunbeam one. The motors are not powerful enough.
        Breville https://www.breville.com/au/en/products/coffee-grinders/bcg2…
        Sunbeam https://www.sunbeam.com.au/kitchen-and-home/coffee/coffee-gr…

        • Do they die because the motor burns? Is it overwhelmed because the spices are too hard or there's too much of them, perhaps?

          • @pizzaguy: No, the motor never burns, it is just that it gets heated up quickly and slows down significantly. I still have these lying in the cupboard.

  • Are the internals the same as the EMO480?

    • Yes it is. I swapped out the burr from this into my worn out emo480.

So this is actually a cheap burr or parts replacement haha

I'd go the emo480 as it has the on off switch rather than depression thing.

  • Not sure how different the models are but I've been using an em0480 (stainless one) for many years. Easily goes fine enough for espresso machines. For those saying it doesn't people were modding them to add another spacer (washer) to the spindle, easy job a buck or two from eBay. In fact sunbeam were selling and probably including this now too perhaps.

There's a considerable price jump to the next tier of machines like the Rancilio Rocky grinder etc
