        Because it's a niche market.

  • I normally spend the extra .invite making the coffee by hand

  • +2

big fan of these grinders almost no waste in grinds you put 20g in you get 20g out. and the consitancy for espresso and even for course grids for french press its perfect. Yes its experience but its still cheaper than alot of the industrial grinders and this is cafe quality grinding.

  • I was tossing between getting Eureka single dose and Eureka Specialita (with possibility to get 3rd party single dose, blow up & inclined base in future). I know the advantage of single does from freshness point of view so coffee does not get stale in hoper, etc, but I am wondering, if you keep opening your coffee beans bag or even if you store them in vacuum container every time you make a cuppa, then it get exposed to air, wouldn't that affects the freshness as well, which defeat the purpose? Any view from experienced user would be great.

    • +1

Yes. You are spot on, but it's not as bad as keeping beans in the hopper. Opening and closing the bag isnt THAT bad I think

I pre measure my beans and keep them in Ikea herb/spice bottles. Or you can pay for expensive single dose bottles.

Or you can split them into smaller ziplock bags or containers, so you are opening up a smaller amount at a time.

      • Thanks, that makes sense, I think Eureka grinders are the one for me.

    • I wrote earlier in the thread that a mate of mine grabbed the Specialita 55 last week. He definitely rates it and has no retention. (He's a coffee-a-phile). Granted he has it paired to his La Marzoc Linea. (Awesome combo and the shots he pulls from it are awesome).
I have a Ceado commercial grinder and I really want to change it as its overkill for home use..

    • Of course, the freshness will be affected. But it won't "defeat the purpose" as you say. The whole beans will remain fresh for a good while… Whereas the ground beans, sitting stuck in the conical burrs, will dry out much more quickly.

I have a sunbeam grinder, I give it a little shake from side to side before each use to remove old grinds.

Whilst there's a lot of people trying to justify the cost of this grinder by attributing benefits to it such as "it doesn't hold many old grinds" - I think that most ozbargainers can see this for what it really is - an expensive, desirable, luxury item. Real world, measurable benefits would be minimal.

      • I had the Sunbeam. It was ok, but not amazing… This is a pretty pricey piece of kit. (Say that 10x fast). :)
I'd probably say the Sette is a decent grinder at a reasonable price before going up to the $1k+ level and then you're really at the diminishing rate of return for $ value…

  • pftt this is how I grind my coffee every morning

Why am I even reading this thread?

  • +9

I like my coffee and have zero interest in buying one of these, but really enjoyed reading through this post. I find it fascinating reading the conversations between people who are at the extreme end of various hobbies and passions. Learn something new every day on OzB!

    • The scary thing is that we haven't really scratched the surface in this thread.

I know guys that have spent over 3k on their grinder alone

    • Agreed

Waiting for the custom mech keyboard community to rock up

  • It if was a flat burr grinder, I might bite. But for conical burr grinders, there are others that perform just as good if not better for $700-ish. Looking at all the complaints and feedback in this post, I think you guys expect the consistency of a flat burr grinder, which the Niche Zero is not going to give you, even if you threw $1000 at it.

    • Flat does not always mean better than conical. Flat is more common in higher end grinders but that doesn’t mean you can’t have bad, inconsistent flat burr grinders.

I’ve compared the NZ to my Mazzer Mini with upgraded 64mm burrs and found it to be much more consistent and flavourful than the Mazzer. YMMV.

      • -1

Yes, I agree that both types can be better than each other depending on the quality and set up of the grinder. But the complaints that many seem to be posting is that it gives large grinds and dust at the same time, which is the grind consistency/feel. That is typical if the conical burr is not set up properly in terms of burr clearance.

    Absolutely AMAZING grinder. Just saying.

I've put close to 60kg of beans through mine and it's never missed a beat. 18.3g in….18.3g out every single morning.

My last three grinders were an Macap M4D —> Mazzer Super Jolly Electronic Grinder —> Baratza Sette 270Wi and there's no way I'd go back to either of them.

  • After reading everything and deliberating…AUS model is sold out. 😩

    • +2

Don’t fret - it’s always this price. They release stock from time to time. Register for updates and be patient.

  • Damn that was an awesome deal, shame it's sold out.

  • +1

Oh damn, out of stock. I was about to buy 6 of them.

I’ve had my Niche Zero for around 10 months and love it. Stepped up from Smart Grinder Pro. No comparison. More enjoyable workflow, quieter, consistent grind size, little retention (the SGP sucked for that), easy to clean, solid performance for espresso through to filter and pour overs. I noticed an improvement in flavour in the cup immediately.

These are hard to find stock of as Niche is still behind the eight-ball on releasing supply, but this is not a bargain. It’s great value for its performance but this is the regular price, and source.

Those who pay $1600+ are just inpatient and paying a sizeable markup so that local retailers can drop ship it and pass on duty and GST. Nothing wrong with that, and I support local retailers in other ways but buy direct from niche and you’ll always pay £499 plus £49 to ship. Most get through without tax.

I’ve still got my SGP as I pull it out in summer to grind larger volumes when I’m making batches of cold brew etc even though it’s all over the shop at doing larger grind sizes! Then I put it away as it’s not the most pleasant looking grinder 🤣

  • -5

Would love someone to do a blind taste test between this and the $20 Kmart job.

  • GST applies to this purchase, right? So it’d be ~$1030 including shipping + 10% GST.

    • Mine got through customs yday and I didn't get charged tax. It's a risk but sounds like most get away with it

  • Thanks OP even though the end user reviews are mixed always good to learn about another high end grinder.

I have a Eureka Atom, similar price when I got it. Once I figured out has performed well, is super silent and pretty consistent dose, although a little tricky when you change the grind to get the dose spot on without practice.

A good, possibly better and cheaper ($750 below) alternative is the Baratza Sette 270Wi with built in scales for precise dosing and known for almost zero grind retention, main drawback from my research is noisy.

    https://www.thebeanery.com.au/products/baratza-sette-270w?va… https://www.thebeanery.com.au/products/baratza-sette-270w?va…

    • I currently rock two 270Wi’s, one for the regular daily blends and one for single dosing. The noice is real, but my wife forgives me every time the coffee arrives on the bedside table.

    • +1

      Baratza Sette 270Wi

      Definitely noisier 🤣 Understatement.

My 270WI made it to landfill after the controller board failed and let out magical electronics smoke. It was <12 months old and had done <40kg of beans

I loved the inbuilt scales, but having moved onto the Niche I just measure my beans with a set of Acaia Lunar scales and trust in the low grind retention of the Niche to know what goes is pretty much what comes out.

  • When I bought my coffee setup late last year this grinder was just not available ANYWHERE - I ended up with a Eureka Mignon Specialita which albeit is not a single-dose grinder still performs well for its price ~$850.

Is it wrong that I also want the Niche? The workflow is what appeals to me the most about a single-dose grinder.

    • I got the Eureka Mignon Specialita too, and mainly do a single dose on that with the 3D printed hopper :)

Is it wrong that I also want the Niche?

      No

Edit: Eureka is flat burr while Niche is conical. They produce different flavour profile. I would love to have both.

  • +2

So, using a brick to crush a handful of beans on the concrete isn't really the way to go? Seems a tad cheaper…

  • A little off topic but if one had a SGP and wanted to upgrade to this, where would be the best place to sell it?
Is there really a market for the lower end second hand grinders like the SGP?

    • +1

I sold my Sunbeam grinder on Ebay.. Coffeesnobs, etc won't touch it. lol

    • +1

yes… FB market place and gumtree.

  • -1

    So cheap! Great deal.

    • It’s not a deal! It’s the regular price and the official channel for buying this grinder!

There are no official distributors of this product in Australia. Retailers (mostly coffee specialty e-tailers) buy from Niche, just like you can here, and add necessary costs to then be able to pass it onto their customers and still make a profit after import costs and adding GST.

  • After reading the comments, I never knew making a cup of coffee is this complicated!

  • +1

Great grinder, highly recommend been using one for almost a year now.

Turned out to be way more expensive as I then purchased a $3.5k coffee machine to match.

  • The grinder on my Breville Barista Pro has broken, I'm looking for something that can do both espresso and filter coffee (for my Breville Precision Brewer). What are some good options that are available in Australia? Should I get the SGP? I only wanna spend $300-$400, can I get something that will do both types in that price range?

    • -1

Baratza Encore has a reputation for punching above its weight and able to handle both espresso and filter coffee. Aesthetics and build quality do obviously suffer but might be worth looking into?

      • Yeah it's on my list, I've seen reviews of it and the SGP saying they aren't good for espresso. Found that a bit weird considering Breville bundle it with some of their espresso machines, e.g. the dual boiler.

        • -1

Grinder that can properly handle both end of the spectrum is not common unfortunately even at higher price range so it's not going to be easy at the price range you are looking at. I'd go as far as saying Baratza encore is pretty much the only realistic option

  • +1

bought this from my local stockist before even buying my coffee machine for $1.1k more than a year ago. Marketing aside, you know it's by far the most used grinder in coffee-related youtube channels speaks volume about this grinder.

Buy once and never need to buy again. Mine has been rock solid since day 1, so quiet and easy to maintain. Compliment most kitchens and classy looking AF (subjective). There is a saying you should spend more money in grinder than your coffee machine, now I'm onto my 3rd upgrade (Rocket R58). Still not needed to upgrade the grinder. Most people should find this suffice for their needs.

  • I've just read this thread and I'm even more confused on what this machine does and how it does it.

I get the impression that knowing the coffee lingo takes years of dedicated or is it something that can be picked up in a month or so.

Till then I'll just push a button for mine. Two if I'm making it with milk.. Good enough for the girls I go out with.

Funny - this morning I woke up content with my SGP. By end of day, I'm considering if should skip this Niche Zero as mid-level and go straight to a Lagom P64. Thanks OzBargain!

    • Ozbargains real talent is getting you to spend money at the end of the day haha.

I went from an integrated grinder (breville coffee machine) with a grinder I bought from Aldi for my filter setup - from that I skipped the sette/mignon/ode/niche phase and went straight to an Atom 75, very soon there will be a P64 sitting next to that.

  • Looked into getting this but went with the Eureka Mignon Specialita 55. Can't comment on the Niche but I love the Eureka, it's super quiet for a grinder (from my experience anyway) and can use both the hopper for batch coffee making or use it as single dose (which I do at the moment). Retention not an issue when running down the same bag of beans.
Love the flat burrs, love the portafilter holder, love the timer, easy to change grind settings. I don't have any gripes at all.

I have the white one and it's very aesthetically pleasing next to my white Ascado Steel Duo PID. And I can make a coffee in 5mins from startup without waking the house up!

Having performed a fair bit of research before the purchase, I'd say that a lot of "facetime" YouTubers use the Niche and quite a lot of "non-facetime" instagrammers use the Eureka so I'm not sure if the Niche is really that good or just popular for being well marketed. There's a hell of a lot of variables that go into making a good espresso, retention is only a minor one.

  • Now back in stock for pre-order

    • They are back again for pre order but December delivery. I ended up just grabbing one that runs off a EU plug as they are being dispatched now.

      • I ordered EU plug too. Have you got your machine yet? Mine has been shipped and in transit since 14/Oct. No movement after that

  • Anyone know when AU models will be release again?

    • It comes through every month or two at least. Just subscribe to their newsletter.

      • Yeah I'm subscribed
        Just playing the waiting game
How long are they usually in stock before gone?

        • When I bought mine, the AU model had units available for days after the launch (black only, from memory - I think white had sold out). The others versions sold out very quickly, but AU was fine.

Could have just been that time they had excess AU units, or aussies just weren't buying at that time…dunno.

          • @caprimulgus: I'm chasing the black anyways
Just hoping it drops again soon! Haha

            • +1

@Discoaus: I'll be 12-months with my Niche in Jan - still loving it. Hang in there and I'm sure some more stock will pop up soon, particularly now manufacturing has probably picked up globally a little again.
