Gigabyte AORUS 2TB M.2 Gen4 NVMe SSD $369 + Shipping @ Skycomp

440

Saw this 2tb Aorus Nvme SSD at skycomp I believe its the cheapest price on net atm!

Next cheapest I can find is ebay $439 sometimes there are discount codes but still doesn't bring it down to this price plus shipping.

Shipping for me was $14.50 in Sydney.

yes there is a new version but really are you going to use that extra bandwidth for most things??

Such value, much wow.

go easy my first post

In regards to extra bandwidth the same can be said for this SSD and cheaper Gen 3. For gaming you will not notice the difference between this and a Kingston A2000. I run both on a high end X570 and there's no noticeable difference.

I'm keen to see direct storage come into fruition because the difference will probably be more noticeable for games at least.

Anyone know if it fits in the ps5?

      • This isn't an external USB SSD

        • +1

yes sorry replied to the wrong thread with the same question. was in the process of editing when you responded.

yes it works with the ps5 works perfectly when installed.

          • @Kiato: LOL, too many ozbargain tabs open?
The concern isn't whether it's compatible but whether it will fit with such a large heatsink.
Don't know the answer myself but it looks pretty chunky

            • @FireRunner: I don't think this one works with PS5, I think it's the new 7000s that works with it.

            • +1

@FireRunner: Yea there was a few tabs open.

              https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/ps5-insta…

The drive doesn't hit the performance requirements but it does meet the installation requirements. It does work, and I didn't notice any issues when it was installed with mine but I did upgrade mine pretty quickly.

              • @Kiato: Can anyone get the beta for the hdd upgrade? I thought it wasn't in Aus yet (assuming you're in Aus)

                • +1

@Kammi: vpn for it now or rumors have it it'll be coming to aus pretty soon too if you would like to wait.

    • Actually i think this is too slow for the ps5?

The AG70S2TB looks like the ps5 one

      • Yep, this doesn't work.

Last I heard Sony wasn't enforcing the minimum transfer speed and just checked if it Gen 4.
          Has it changed since then?

          • +1

@FireRunner: I'm not a PS5 user (my kids are but they haven't upgraded storage) but I recall an older thread here someone saying this wasn't compatible.

Edit/ Kiato above said it worked for him, good enough

            • @[Deactivated]: One thing to note is that the SSD support is still in beta.
Though I think it's unlikely, they may make the minimum transfer speed a requirement in the next PS5 system update for the general users

@FireRunner: It might not be enforced, but it would be a terrible idea IMO to buy something under spec. Might a) end up being enforced later b) actually degrading game performance for games that expect the bandwidth within spec. Its not even work considering I reckon.

            • @Gmetal: Depends if future games can actually utilise the higher bandwidth of Gen4 NVMe drives
Currently, most utilisation happens during loading which would just mean a slightly longer wait for a under-spec drive
I don't see it becoming a hard requirement or by using an under-spec drive actually having an negative effect on games anytime soon
But who knows for sure, sticking to spec would be safest option

Edit: I wouldn't get it for PS5 at this price but a drive for around $300 like this deal I'd probably risk it

              • +1

@FireRunner: "Currently, most utilisation happens during loading which would just mean a slightly longer wait for a under-spec drive"

This is a greatly over simplified model of how loading data works in games, its not just static pre-level load times. Many modern games, and even more so PS5 generation games will not use this model of "loading screen while data loads to RAM and then you play". With the shift to SSDs is that they can now more aggresively stream in data as you play than before - ie load in as you enter sections etc.

For HDD speeds, games slowed you down so you couldnt load in thid data, decreased the level of detail, and had smaller draw distance. This will be greatly improved this gen, and again - games will be designed with the expected read specification in mind.

You can already see PS5 games that have desinged their mechanics around this on the fly loading - like Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, and its likely games will leverage this more aggresively as the generation goes forward. Being under spec might work, or might not for future games that rely on the SSD streaming bandwidth.

And I agree - depends what level of risk you are willing to take on for a potentially frustrating experience, for saving a bit of money now - just know that its potentially more than just a bit of pre game loading times. Personally I'd recommend conforming to the spec Sony has set.

      • It works: https://www.gigabyte.com/au/Solid-State-Drive/AORUS-NVMe-Gen…

AORUS NVMe Gen4 SSD meets the required performance and dimensions of PS5 M.2 SSD.

According to the expansion requirements of PS5, SSD Sequential read speed needs to be up to 5,500MB/s. Working with PS5, AORUS NVMe Gen4 SSD delivers up to 5600 MB/s sequential read.
