What Fast Food Did You Used to Eat Heaps, and Now Don't?

Mine would be Subway, used to eat a Footlong at least once a week back in the day, now its barely a once every 6 month affair.

I started getting put off by the high price of the Subs, the perceived use of too many preservatives and the lack of a decent loyalty scheme.

    • Any local pizza place is better than domino's.

Cheap pizza's suck because they make no money on them anyway.

      • +2

my local dominos is better, local pizza places can't beat the $7.95 deals :D

        • +3

My local place buys the discount "shredded" stuff from the coles deli section and then chucks it over some dolmio sauce. The base is at least freshly made, crispy and puffy. Domino's is pretty average, but still ultimately better value.

    • It's because they want to offer their pizza for cheaper. Want a cheaper pizza? you get less ingredients, less quality etc.

Go to any local pizza place and it'll be way better - but don't complain when the pizza is $23 as opposed to $8.

  • +4

Subway to be honest. If I was at work, I stopped by due to the bread smell and the cookies. But then it got to a point where I questioned why I was buying sub-standard (ha) sandwiches when I usually had better options nearby.

  • +1

    Another vote for subway

Kebabs / HSPs (apparently they don't call them HSPs outside of Melbourne) - this was a huge deal back in 2015-16, but seems to have just died down.

    • massively overrated imho.

    • +2

yeh paying 20 bux for some chips and processed fatty cuts of mystery meat, lathered in cheap sauce

      pass!

    • +6

they don't call them HSPs outside of Melbourne

It would appear that HSP's are actually a Sydney invention.

    • I'm in Sydney but only started eating them within the last 2 years.

Out of all my Uber Eats/Deliveroo options, a large HSP delivered from my local kebab place is the cheapest meal available.

    • Halal Snack Packs were my whole University life 2015-16 as well! Campbeltown NSW on Queen Street on the regular. The holy Trinity sauces, cheese, mmmm. been a while

    • ABs in Adelaide. Yeah, used to have them years ago but it's just too much grease now.

    • HSP in Brisbane, although they also go by Crack Pack's. A large one down the road is $15 which is pretty good for the inner suburbs (Milton).

    • The term HSP is used in Sydney

  • +10

    Oporto. Before it was unaffordable.

    • Oporto was much tastier in the early days.

  • +2

I'm down across the board … like many as the metabolism slows!

That said, one that I used to love, but has become very average (IMHO) is Oporto. Started out as a great joint and now feels very mass produced/low quality.

They're a bit harder to come by, but if you used to love Oporto, find an Ogalo and give them a run.

    • How do you find the whole chickens? Half price once a year.

      • I'm more a burger man personally.

Don't rate anything with a bone in it. I make an exception for pork ribs.

    • +2

Their burgers haven't really changed much. Except I find the fillets have shrunk considerably. I have to order a triple fillet Bondi burger to get the same amount of chicken as you would get in the double fillet a few years ago.

    • The metabolism slowing down is purely due to lost muscle mass normally due to increasingly sedentary lifestyles that correlate with age.

You get older, accumulate more little injuries, aches and pains, and you stop doing as much: Atrophy sets in

Does anyone see the irony in OP's Simpson's avatar and that scene involving steamed hams?

    https://youtu.be/4jXEuIHY9ic

    • hey! Steamed hams are relatively healthy.

      • So you still eat Krusty Burger?

        • I tried this new place in Shelbyville, but they didn't have Krusty partially-gelatinated non-dairy gum-based beverages!

      • Old family recipe

  • Pretty much everything.

Used to love KFC, Big Macs, fries dipped in chocolate thick shake, chicken schnitzel burgers and yeeros.

    Not anymore.

I buy a pizza every 3 months or so but that's it.

  • +1

Used to eat a lot of fast food, (KFC, McDonalds), stopped after taking a nutrition and health elective at uni. Still have the occasional GYG once every month or so.

  • +1

HJ's…. I love salt don't get me wrong, but the last few times I've been both the chips and nuggets have had inedible amounts of salt in it. I also can't eat more than one burger without feeling off afterwards….

P.S I've also asked for no salt(on menulog tho) still got it smothered in the stuff, chucked the whole lot out(I don't appreciate wasting food and money)

    • +1

Give feedback to Menulog and they will refund you

  • Zinger Box, its been 3 months now and only because there isn't one right near me anymore : (

  • Pre-covid I used to have maccas breaky once or twice a week but I couldn't get it the entire vic 2020 lockdown. rarely gone in 2021 because the prices turned me off. I still enjoy it so I'll have lunch with my colleagues there (with app deals) but never on my own.

KFC only lunch with colleagues or if they have hot & spicy.

Hungry Jacks maybe once in the past year.

  • +5

    Cereals

    • have you substituted it with something?

      • +14

        Intermittent fasting

  • +1

Don't eat any of that stuff anymore unless desperate, now that I have got used to eating more healthy in general I find it all too greasy and salty and leaves me feeling queasy afterwards

    • +1

      That's just you getting old……sorry

  • +2

    Petrol Station Pies

    • When 7/11 rebounded many moons ago, they got good. And their sanga range was ok. Back to crap again.

    • stumbling home from the nightclubs at 6am

  • +2

    Domino's, haven't touched that sh1t in years.

Poor quality and size reductions just left a bad taste in my mouth.

I spend twice the amount and get three times the value from my local independent.

  • +1

Combo Jumbo Laksa at Asian noodle house. awesome Laksa's but since my work location is now too far away from the closest one I have not had one in a good 5+ years. Used to have 1 a week.

    • Laksa at Happy Garden chinese in the Darwin Casurina Shopping Centre. I haven't been back to the NT for 5+ years, but it still sticks in my mind as MIND BLOWING compared to anything I've tried elsewhere

  • +4

Mcdonald's. I still like it but their food has shrunk too much and is bad value.

    • agreed, I only get it now if there is an amazing app offer, which tbh is on average only once every few weeks.

  • Domino's after I mainlined it back in 2016-2018 when they ramped up the deals.

  • +7

KFC. Moved onto Red Rooster instead.

  • +3

Used to eat kebabs everyday after work. I work in hospitality. So perfect thing for me to eat. I'd get a mixed kebab with the lot and HOLY TRINITY SAUCE extra garlic sauce because i like having a savage breath.

Whats your favourite combination from a kebab shop?

    • +2

lamb with the lot and extra garlic

      • Surely you don’t actually believe lamb kebabs are lamb. It’s mutton.

    • +1

Upvote for Holy Trinity sauce. It surprises me that many kebab places here don't know what it means.

      • +1

        What is it

        • It's the combination of garlic sauce, barbecue sauce and chili sauce.

      • yeah, what is that?

  • +1

Subway for me too. Way WAY back in the day, when I was at uni, there was some sort of student card deal where you got two footlongs for the price of one. After a few years of having access to that I couldn't do it any more when the deal finished.

Fave takeout these days is laksa. So good.

    • +1

Yeah those 2 for one deals were the bomb back in the day

  • +1

Cherry ripe. I used to buy a lot when they go half price. And then eat one or two as a dessert after every meal. The coconut scrapes made me crave for them whenever I was hungry. After continuously doing that for 4-5 years I stopped for no reason. Now I walk by the chocolate aisle and I don’t even notice them.

    • +2

I suspect you've found something else you're addicted to now….

      • +1

just buys them from Amazon now…

000, yes I'd like call an ambulance for a burn victim.

  • When I was a kid we had fish and chips, every, Friday. My mother’s concession to my Dad’s Catholicism.

When I was at Uni we would play Runequest into the early mornings then drop into Pancake Parlour for an “IT”. The indigestion was horrific but I couldn’t stop. Before you make the “no girlfriend” cracks I am the girl.

I’ve, also, given up on Subway; they just aren’t as good anymore.

  • +3

I used to eat all kinds of trash until I gained about 10kg (main culprit was a local Indian place that I ordered takeaway from probably 3-4 times a week). I then went on a proper health binge and stopped all sugar (juice, soft drinks, biscuits, cereal) and almost all processed food/fast food for about a year and started going to the gym. I tried some of the foods I used to like and was horrified at how gross I felt after eating them.

I now eat KFC twice a year, and only because it takes me about six months to forget how bad it really is.

  • +1

KFC/McD/HJs etc - i've just increasingly reduced my spending at these sorts of fast food place since I was a kid. When I was a teenager, it was normal for me to binge on these foods daily or whenever I had money. I probably reduced my intake to fortnightly or monthly as an adult until I had a stint during lockdown when I ordered UberEats fast food like 10-20 times a week for nearly two months. It put me off entirely when I realised that I had gained like 10kg and had nothing to show for it except for 10kg on my belly and a realisation that I've blown like $2000+ on crap that's made me fat. I think that was the nail in the coffin for me. As soon as I switched back to normal foods, I never craved fast food anymore.

I still wouldn't mind junk foods such as pizza or indian+chinese takeout, but usually on special occasions like a birthday, grand final, promotions, graduation, etc

  • +8

Kebabs - late night snack almost every week with family or with mates. Gained 20kg over a decade of poor diet and lack of exercise. As I get older, my metabolism is struggling to breakdown food, so I started exercising daily and cut the fast food. Now I'm in a healthy weight range, more energy and happier in life.

  • +1

Pretty much all fast food except Subway. Health wise it compares very favourably. It is even more appealing since the app came out, it remembers your sub preferences. You specify the time, walk in and skip the queue like a sandwich VIP.

  • MACCAS
it is interesting they got rid of ronald mcdonald all the mascots etc from the stores. I think they want to paint another image of mcdonalds- as the healthier/premium version. I think they're trying to get rid of the idea that is is fast food junk.
The recent macdonalds ad thanking all australians- don't think there was a single mascot there

  • Kebab and dominos.

  • Chipotle, in and out, raising canes

Only because I left that crazy country.

  • -1

    Hong Ha Mascot. Discuss…

Also, who can go past a HSP

  • Use to get KFC every 3 days when I worked afternoons

  • Pretty much all of it. Became severely gluten intolerant in my late 20s :(

Enjoy the odd Macca's milkshake and sundae as that's about all I can have

  • +4

My $2 McFlurry's were a university staple. 3 50c soft serves, 50c lid of Oreo/m&ms, large cup of water and a spoon. Finish the water, fill the cup with the soft serve ice cream and selected topping, big hand mix, happy days.

  • Haven't had KFC for ages. Me think it's time to buy one soon.

  • +2

Mine is Guzman, I used to have them quite regularly but I remember years ago for Sinkhole the Mayo they had $5 burritos for the entire week. I ate burritos for breakfast, lunch and dinner… I swear I must have eaten at least 10 before I got sick of them. I thought I'd be back on them after a bit of a break but I just never wanted to have them again.

  • HJs, for six years until last Monday, after my jab. I thought "treat yourself".
Finally try that rebel whopper. Mmm not terrible!
Small chips: not string-cut French fries like they used to be. Hot, crispy and so darned salty. I'm thankful they were a bit mean on the portion size.

  • So much junk. Grease. Meat pies. Sausage rolls, HJs KFC so much carbs. Used to get free drink unlimited refills at HJs so much sugar

  • Yep I came to say Subway too. Used to be great value several years ago, but not anymore.

  • KFC and Maccas.
    - Maccas: because, unlike my teenage self from 15yrs ago, I can now tell how shitty it really is, considering I can cook now. Still, McCafe coffee is for me a good substitute for a cafe coffee. Not a masterclass, but good enough to have on the go with consistency behind it.
    - KFC: even though it is heaps better than Maccas (whole chicken bits), Aussie KFC is vastly different than the European one, and in a worse sense. Cannot really put my finger on what exactly is different, but it tastes worse, like the batter is more greasy, and there's less meat in each bit.

  • For me its Chinese food. Back in the days where we used to go into the office for work I had it for lunch most weekdays. Since lock down (over 12 months) I reckon I've had it once or twice.

  • KFC.

I used to eat this twice a week.

  • Been ages since I've eaten Portuguese Chicken like Oporto, Nandos etc. Was my go to fast food for a bit.

Use to get a lot of Guzmans as well but dropped off over the last 5 years.

I feel like Dominos has become my fastfood staple… it's cheap and convenient… makes it very dangerous!

  • Burger King - too many bad experiences recently. The quality has really dropped over the years.

  • Any plant based foods (except caffeine)

    • why is that?

      • I heard it could cure a chronic condition I had for nearly 10 years. Turns out it did (for me). My guess is that I'm allergic to 1 or 2 specific things, which I happen to have eliminated by cutting out all plants.

        • +1

almost sounds like a reaction to Fodmaps, you ever had the breath test done?

          • @SupeNintendoChalmers: I haven't been tested for that. Just looked it up, I am indeed only eating the "meat and fish" category of here plus eggs and black coffee.
So if I decide to re-introduce anything in the future, I'll start with things in that list.

  • +3

Lockdown has made me cook more frequently with zero take aways….and also because of feeding the little monsters who are always hungry at home.

Make your own dishes/meal whether its fried chicken, noodles or burger. It's way cheaper, healthier and fun minus the cleaning 😅

    The wonders of YouTube videos.

    • Oh the Cleaning, ALWAYS CLEANING! :P

  • McDonalds occasionally. I do not go near Hungry Jacks (the bikie eating an enormous burger in the TV ad also turns me off).
Wife & I prefer Red Rooster chicken with peas and potato pieces. Gravy separate in another small container.

  • KFC is worst in terms of OIL. Subway is too much talk to order. I don't like their order system.

    • +1

I've been ordering through their app instead and at least you don't have to stand there and tell them. To be honest, it's always disappointing. Obviously making something yourself is nearly always better but if I'm getting takeaway, I try local cafes or Vietnamese bakeries instead.
