  • Reading the site, it says.
    Samsung Galaxy S21 5G

    Now $624. Save $624
Buy outright or $26/mth for 24 mths.

Was $1,248. Save 50% off RRP when you add to an eligible Mobile plan.

That tells me that you will be locked to a 24 month plan with Telstra whether you buy outright or not. Still has to be connected to a plan.

    • Last month you could buy the iPhone 12 mini outright. We will see if this is the case with the s21.

    • At worst you can sign up to a month to month plan and cancel after the first month. But I suspect you'd only need to have a plan attached to get the $24/month payment option.

  • I added it my cart and then its wanting to do a credit even though I selected outright option without a plan. Silly system.

    • An update. I could go all the way to the payment option so its working for me but still couldn't find out how to use my points towards the purchase.

      • did step 2 do a credit check?

        • I just entered my license details and not sure what happened in the background.

  • I have got 53000 Telstra points banked up. Anyone knows how do I use it and how much they are worth?

    • Pretty sure you can only use them in the Telstra Plus Rewards store. Don't think you can use them for general purchases.

    • I have figured out I need to go to Plus store to use it and its roughly $150 worth. I am hoping the deal is going to be available through Plus as well.

  • Wow! Big production run. Nowadays Xiaomi has taken the lions share of the developping world. Still the S21 series will go down the history books of good phones.

I'm waiting for OW to price beat this.

Placed a request with OW head office, wish me luck fam.

    • That will be great if they do.

    • if price beated how long would the price beat last?

    • Any luck on the price beat? Tried calling them but they're busy.

      • same

      • One hour + wait time later.

No dice. They need to know specific colour of model(s), otherwise they won't match it.

        • I hope not. Is that what happened last time? (Wait time)

    • I called GG to price beat and they told me to call back once the deal is live

      • +1

        Nice

        But

Will they pick up at 12.01am?

        • I called again and spoke to someone else who told me their buy price is about $1100 so they couldn't match it anyway.

          • @closed: Oh well, worth a try i guess

  • Hello, these deals will go live at midnight tonight correct? This would be a big upgrade from my note 8

    • Yup, 12:01am AEST

      • +1

Okay, alarm set. Hopefully I can get 1.

    • Just a word of warning, the battery life may frustrate you coming from a note model back to a base model.

      • That's ok. I think I will be fine

  • How much of a dealbreaker is the no headphone jack and charging cable in the box?

I was thinking of purchasing it as an upgrade for fathers day as his old one is 6+ years and starting to conk out. He mainly uses it to take photos and watch videos online. He's not overly into tech so I'm mainly worried about the lack of a headphone jack.

    • +1

It really depends on the person. I already have chargers everywhere and use Bluetooth earphones so I've always just left the included charger and earphones untouched in the box for when I resell the phone. Someone who only uses one charger in one place all the time would probably feel the pinch, but a charger is only $15-20 and will easily last a decade so it's not a big deal IMHO.

How many headphones or earphones does he have? Does he use it with other devices? If he only has one pair which he uses with his phone, just attach the $15 dongle to the cable permanently. That'll "convert" it to a Type C headphone.

      • Thanks. He normally gets older phones just due to the price so I probably would've had to purchase a new cable anyway. He does have a tendency to pull on the charging cable so most the cables would have been well-worn as well.

I forgot that there was conversion cables for usb-c to headphone jacks but that might be the way to go. He has several earphones but they are also in that worn out stage so its better than buying a new cable just for the phone.

    • +1

He's not overly into tech so I'm mainly worried about the lack of a headphone jack.

If he's anything like my dad, he will play all videos on loudspeaker anyway

    • +1

If the user has a pair of BT headphones that they use most of the time, you won't even notice the lack of headphone jack. Just get a cheap USB-C to 3.5mm adapter just in case.

It does come with a USB-C to USB-C charging cable in the box, but no wall plug. Most people would have plenty of chargers lying around. If they haven't had a USB-C device before, just make sure they have the correct charging cable (USB-A to USB-C). Old chargers won't fast charge these phones, but they'll still charge fine.

So, for the vast majority of people, it shouldn't be a problem at all.

  • Hmm signed up for a mytelstra account without any plans but can't even log in at the moment. That's not a good sign.

  • -1

Have to be already with Telstra?

    • It says new or existing customers.

  • +1

OP, any word on all those having issues creating accounts/checking out before this becomes a clusterf**k at midnight? A lot of us are getting a 'Something Went Wrong' when pressing 'next' after the ID verification stage. I have spoken to support three times, tried creating an account with my wife's details. The same result. I am keen on the deal however looks like at this stage I won't be able to purchase due to this. I also called a store and they said I have to do it online and can only order from store if I am there in person.

    • Same issue here. I noticed if you add a plan to cart it is able to proceed through to the next page. Only if you select the phone outright without a plan - you get the error message.
Hope this doesn't mean we can only purchase the phone outright with a bundled plan

      • +1

Website says clearly that 50% off is only with a plan.

        • +3

the rep that posted this deal said you can buy outright

  • gonna ring up officework this arvo and see what they say about price matching these. Anyone have experiences with price matching there? ive never done it before.

    • How did you go?

      • been calling since 1pm every 2 hours and no one answered…. the whole store must be on smoko…

      • so someone finally picked up and he said that officework wouldnt price beat cause the deal is for Telstra customers since you gotta have an account or plan with them to get it, if it was retail without you needing to be a telstra customer they would price beat it..

  • Seems like the 50% off is if you buy a plan

  • -8

Exxynos processor….still too rich for me tbh…..Needs to be at least 75% off

    • You have no clue what you're on about.

      • -4

Well, I have the 21+ and another Snapdragon Variant phone. Exynos is definitely still second-rate.

        • Compared to what? My S21+ is great and I hated my old Exynos S9.

          • @wombat81: Zenfone 8, specifically.

And this isn't just my opinion. There is some Samsung staff I've spoken to and a good number of them share the same opinion.

Exynos is garbage and so is Bixby.

  • +1

If i wanted to buy outright, do i need to have an existing account with Telstra? or can i just buy it outright?

    • The site clearly says:

      Samsung Galaxy S21 5G
      Now $624. Save $624
Buy outright or $26/mth for 24 mths.

Was $1,248. Save 50% off RRP when you add to an eligible Mobile plan.

    • I rang two local (SA) stores with this question.
The first store told me I would have to sign up for a $55 monthly plan which I could cancel after one month.
The second store told me I could buy the phone outright without any plan. He seemed to be reading the conditions of tomorrow's sale when I spoke with him.

  • -5

My local Telstra shop has 4 in stock. She is happy to sell me all 4 if I am first in line and there are no other takers but I assume there will be a queue at 9am as to buy it online you may not see it for a week but buying instore you have it now.
I think the street price will drop on these now. As there will be a flood of un opened ones on eBay. This happened when they sold the iPhone 12 a month ago.

  • tempting and divided between the samsung offer vs the new google pixel 6.

  • Is the deal also apply to in-store shopping?

    • Yep! Online and in-store.

      • +4

Can you please confirm can purchase it outright without a plan. I already have 2x prepaid on my account.
        Cheers

  • S21 Ultra or wait for Pixel 6

Down, down, prices are down. This time compliments of Samsung Australia
An early merry Xmas to All Australians~

    For reference:

    SAMSUNG Galaxy S21 5G 128GB $1249
(Launch price in late January 2021)

Down to now mouth watering $624 buckeroos

    $1249-$624= $625

$624÷$1249= 49.96% depreciation in less than one year ownership.

$625÷7 months past launch= $89.3 per month depreciation rate

Build of materials cost, approx including Vietnamese factory labour= $370AUD

Not much is there for Samsung to margin big like the big Apple corp.
Razor thin margins for Galaxy smartphones including the flip and fold flop lines.

You need to pay marketing team, R&D team, logistics, etc

    How they survive???

    • what?

    • You're assuming this is a permanent price drop with unlimited stock, rather than a sale event that's only open to the customers of one telco.

The iPhone 12 Mini dropped from $1,199 to $699. Would you say that's 42% depreciation in less than one year? Or did prices go back to normal after the sale?

      • Wouldn't Samsung Australia Pty ltd have a written legal document with telcos and major retailers about price reduction "rules"
i.e. don't go below $xxxx.xx or else your supplier/distributor contract is over. Something in those lines i reckon.

        These smartphones/phablets/tablets/folds
are coming from downtown Vietnam. And coming over to Australian market by sea/air transport. Then Samsung hands it over to major suppliers and keeps some for themselves to sell as well.

That's my personal understanding of it all. Doesn't mean I'm 100% correct.

        • +1

It's actually illegal for suppliers to impose such rules.

It is illegal for suppliers to:
          - put pressure on businesses to charge their recommended retail price or any other set price, for example by threatening to stop supplying to the reseller
          - stop resellers from advertising, displaying or selling goods from the supplier below a specified price.

          • @eug: Nice to see some regulations for fair sale/play for both buyers and sellers.

Samsung et al. can sell it for $0.01 to $ max price. No worries. No one is forcing you to buy or sell at a certain price.

    • they build ships mate.

  • I wish it was s21+ included on these half-price telstra day. Wouldnt mind getting it despite no SD card or headphone jack.

  • @lukehopewell Will Tab S7 plus get a deal?

  • +4

Buying Outright seems to only be working at the moment in checkout when I add a pre-paid plan, if this is the case, is everyone going to just pay an extra $55 and just cancel immediately?

OP - are you able to clarify if you are able to buy straight Outright without a Plan at all? thanks.

    • Isn't there early termination charge if you cancel the plan?

      • No as it's month to month, but you may not get it pro-rata eg. you'll pay $55 for the full month even if you're connected for a few days.

        • Pro rata hasn't been a thing for some time now.
          No refunds.

  • Does it have to be attached to any plan or can you just purchase it outright???

  • +1

It says "50% off with an eligible plan"

Do you need to be an existing Telstra customer to get this deal or can I jump on and purchase the phone outright for half price?

  • +18

Alright I went to telstra store front just now and here's how it's gonna be:

    1) you gotta be a telstra customer whether new or existing, which means you do need to have a plan or number with them to get the deal.
    2) cheapest plan is $55 casual contract so you can cancel but you do need to pay first month upfront (so total is 624 + 55 = $679 for 128gb version).
    3) if you already are a telstra customer, you can buy the phone outright and not attach any plan with it. You can buy as many as you want.
    4) bonus: Officework will not price match these because it requires you to be a telstra customer.

    • came here to post exactly this. confirmed in store at my local and the guy said exactly the same.
he also said they didnt have any in store but "alot" will be arriving tomorrow

      • @lukehopewell any chance you can pls clarify? Ta

        • If you go to Page 1, and just scroll down Comment No.7…It's there

You can purchase outright or attach to your Telstra account/plan over 24 months. :)"

        • its on the telstra day page
          "Samsung Galaxy S21 5G
          Now $624. Save $624
Buy outright or $26/mth for 24 mths.
Was $1,248. Save 50% off RRP when you add to an eligible Mobile plan."

you can buy it outright or pay $26 a month for 24 months for the phone but either way you have to go on to an eligible plan.

          • @humantraffic: if youre already a customer with active plan, you can just outright buy these phones without attaching new plans.

i also saw a couple of people from last month's post said they had previous accounts that no longer have any active service but still managed to buy the phone with no plans.

the takeaway is that you need to have a telstra account, which as far as I know you need to start a plan with them.

someone said buying a $2 sim worked but im not sure how that counts as having a service sincr its just a prepaid starter sim with no plan on it.

            • @PuntyBrah: @puntybrah exactly.
i said that in my first post that i confirmed everything you said. lurvin was asking for clarification, so i pointed them to the official word from the site.
i couldnt vouch or confirm other ppls experience from previous events or grey areas that have been accepted so i didnt.
it also highly doubtful the rep would confirm or even acknowledge any of those loopholes whether they worked or not.

              • @humantraffic: yhh i hear ya was just adding to your clarification, these things can get abit confusing even tho they seem simple on paper.

well we wont have to wait much longer, pretty excited to have huge discounts on flagship devices like this.

                • @PuntyBrah: agreed! if theres hoop jumping to be done for 50% saving, ima ask "off what cliff?" haha

    • I wonder if you could quickly get a $30 prepaid SIM to become a customer and then buy this outright without the $55 plan?

      • saw a guy bought $2 sims and score an iphone 12 during august's deal in the other post, definitely worth a try I mean.. 2 bucks.. lol

        • I just tried to sign up for a Telstra account in preparation because I was able to add the phone without a plan, but need ID to register an account which is fine but it has to be an Aussie passport or Aussie driver's licence….

          • @wendydendy: i doubt it has to be aussie passport only…. i dont think theyd be the biggest telcom here if they only provide services to aussies lol

            • @PuntyBrah: Identity verification
You need the following to complete your order:
An Australian driver’s licence or Australian passport
A debit/credit card or bank account details
              Be 18 or over

Literally only has the option to put in Australian passport or Australian drivers.

Comes up after you click buy, takes you into the ID page :/

              • +1

@wendydendy: try going with aussie passport and just use whatever passport you have i think

How do we purchase these phones? I can't seem to find the online telstra shop?

    • deal goes online at 12:01 am tonight.

      • Cheers was wondering what time they would drop - staying up late it is :-)

  • +1

I really would like to know what the price of the Ultra is going to be, hopefully, someone might let us know before 12.01. I wonder if there is going to be a crazy rush on them or if they might sell out of the stock that they have? I don't really want to sit up till late but I guess that a lot of us will be doing that!

    • +2

10pm is not too late (WA time)…

    • In the info about T Day it says "some deals are so popular the warehouse runs out of stock but we will ship when stock comes back in". So surely means no one will miss out? Hopefully :)
I aint getting up at midnight, papa needs sleep.

  • can someone link me the s21 phone from telstra im having trouble finding it
