If I had to guess, there's not much mark up for the retailer selling a Rip Curl tee for $40. Selling their own brand tee for $40 though it's probably like $38.50 profit. You've already got the distribution channel, so if you can design some half decent generic threads and get them made in a factory in China, why not.
I know about the better profit margin, but it's going down the same way as supermarkets - reduced choices when you don't want the home brand.

I would not order at Surfstitch. A friend of mine ordered there shoes and got it delivered in the parcel full of sand. They got accused they have used the shoes on the beach and didn’t accept a return. Please do not order at Surfstitch. It sounds ridiculous, but I can provide screenshots and photos for anyone who’s not believing this.
