    Massive scam Walt

    • Disney's sales, lawyers and marketing team are here I see.
GG on bringing priacy back you corporate stooges

    • +3

Yep, charging a $35 fee for a single rental within an already paid for streaming service is nothing more than a phishing exercise. It relies on just a small number of people (often children) inadvertently clicking through with the rental purchase. Much like those scam mobile games with in-app purchases for $100.

      • +5

Um…you need to enter your credit card details in full to go ahead with the purchase. At least that's what I had to do when I purchased Jungle Cruise (Android TV) a few days ago. You can also set up a parental PIN as well as contact Customer Support for a full refund for accidental purchases.

As for the fee, I don't think it's entirely unreasonable given movie theatres are shut. $35 and homemade popcorn works out to be a lot cheaper than 4 tickets and candy bar prices at Hoyts: especially if you've got a semi-decent set up at home

        • It's a fair point, and indeed there are safeguards (pins etc) as there are on Amazon Prime for premium content, but I still can't help but feel they are on a phishing expedition here given the price point (~7x the usual rental price).

Anyway, as the movie becomes free (included with standard sub) after just a few weeks any, even those who partake once will likely see little value @ $35 for future releases I'm guessing. That all said, there are plenty of people with a lot more money than me out there!

          • +1

@ash2000: 7x the rental price isn't really what you are comparing with though, the rental price should be compared with the Disney + subscription price as it becomes free on D+ around about when rentals are usually released.

The price is to be compared to a movie ticket price, IMO 35 is in about the middle, for a bigger family its probably cheap but for only 3 people we managed to see space jam in cinemas for 27 so it wouldn't really be worth it.

    Wait forrrrrrrrrrrrrr it…….

edit: looks like I was too late, the comments already started!

  • +50

Streaming services managed to eliminate piracy and then reintroduce it in a pretty quick span of time.
Props to them for being agile I guess.

What they don't even realize is they've made torrents HD as soon as they come out. My friend said he watched that new Suicide Squad movie in HD even though it had just come out, while i'm here trying to figure out how to pay for it on HBO Max…

      • Wait that's already released on HD?

        • The digital release is delayed here but it's out in other countries.

      • +1

        Yes saw suicide squad

      • +1

thanks just downloaded it, didn't know it was out.

      • Yeah, I went to the movies before realising it could just be downloaded, thankfully it was actually well worth the money to go to the movies.

Can't say that often for recent movies.

        • +1

$20+ for a movie ticket these days is a bit of an ask. I could rent a movie on Google or something for the same price and the whole family can watch.

          • @BadGiraffe: If you're with Optus (Hoyts) or Telstra (Village) then there's no reason you should be paying more than $12.50 for a ticket. Though I don't mind paying for popcorn as its part of the experience.

          • @BadGiraffe: Most places that arent Hoyts have options for less than $20

If you plan ahead then you can use a rewards service to get cheaper tix at like 12 bucks

(Coles, Entertainment book, RAC, Optus, Telstra, NRMA, Ebay, Banks) There are so many different options out there, you are bound to have at least one.

      • +7

That would be so illegal. I would never download such a movie when I could simply pay double with a subscription plus a $30 purchase . That would be the honest way to do it, plus my money would go to a good corporation like Disney and I can safely sleep at night!

    • +1

Just download telegram it has basically every movie that's streaming

  • +14

    Free for All Disney+ Subscribers

But you're paying for a subscription?

    • +1

It was paid the day it came out since it launched together with cinemas. Not sure why we're putting this in as a 'deal' though.

      • Yeah but their marketing/sales team is still here apparently!

    • I’m not paying coz I got my subscription for free *taps head

    • +7

The way I see it, a lot of us are logging into Disney+ with a long lost cousins best friend sister's account, so not really paying.

    • -3

Here we go again with the debaTE .
mODs agaIn wil lsay you can block it ( but it shouldn't be here ) .

      • +2

I don't have a problem with these posts. It's calling it "Free" when it's technically not.

        • +4

That would be clearly tagged as ‘freebie’ then- completely free for a product/service no strings attached. This deal (and others alike) makes sense because it’s something that’s valued at $34.99 and now $0, at the very least save $34.99 vs current prices

        • +2

Eh, everyone knows what it means when it says [subs]. If you object to this being called free, is it also wrong to say that it costs $34.99 now? Is it wrong to post a deal for an item at $price (+delivery)? Is a phone that's $1,000 via a UNiDAYS deal not really $1,000?

As long as we use consistent language and don't hide details I don't really see how this is an issue.

  • +1

Sorry but is this Cruella from 101 Dalmatians?

    • +1

      I believe it is, yes.

Apparently they gave her a tragic backstory - it was in the 'complaint of the week'-type thing a few weeks ago. Some people were not happy.

      • Huh interesting… thought it was more like Devil wears Prada until I realised she looks like the one from Dalmatians.

        • Pretty much summed up it is Devil wears Prada cross a typical Disney plot.

      • I enjoyed Joker enough that I watched it a couple times, but I am happy with the agreement amongst most of the main Batman writers that the Joker with a backstory is a multiverse alternate as the Joker character can't have a backstory.

    • 3rd movie of the franchise serves as as both a prequel and reboot.

      • may i know what are the other 2?
        101 dalmations and ?

        thanks

        • +2

          102 Dalmatians

        • It depends. There are actually four films, the animated versions are called 101 Dalmatians, and 101 Dalmatians II (Patch's London Adventure). The live-action versions are called 101 Dalmatians, and 102 Dalmatians (completely different sequel with a different plot).

I've watched all four very recently and the two sequels really lack the charm of the original animated/live action film. Very meh.

    • No, it's Cruella from Disney's You've Got Mail.

  • +5

Good movie, I paid to watch it early with the family and they loved it. As a big Marvel fan I actually enjoyed this more than Black Widow which is kinda sad.

    • What a nice family man you are. If my daughters ask me to pay premier access it will be met with some strong resistance… Haha

      • +1

Don't worry I beat them, make them sleep in the garden and force them to watch reality tv in order to even it all out.

Tbh though in the current situation I'd prefer to pay to watch a big budget movie at home than to send the kids to a cinema (when it's even a possibility)

      • Ditto. The answer was no. Already paid a sub, they can wait a few months. But I am Mean Dad!
Now I have an alias does that make me a supervillain?

        • Do you have out of fashion track pants with dad bod muffin top? the mean dad supervillain look.

        • Would you have said no if they asked for $40 to go watch it in the movies? As a Dad you should be able to see the value in buying it than paying for to watching it once at a cinema.

    • -4

Yes, being a Marvel fan must be sad indeed.

      • +2

True, but it beats the alternative shudders

        • hey the new suicide squad was actually a lot of fun, albeit not kid friendly

          • @bakemon0: Sad that it took 2 movies to actually get it right. And even then they had to get a director from the Marvel universe to actually make it good.

          • @bakemon0: I enjoyed that actually, definitely an improvement on the first.

          • @bakemon0: Shazam! was pretty good too. A few of my friends who are DC fans didn't like it. They said it was too "Marvel". I don't know… it was fun, family-friendly ride.

    • +1

Black widow felt more like an obligatory Scarlett johansson spin-off movie than proper MCU canon. Was really disappointed. I paid for premier access and I just zoned out through half the movie lol

    • +3

It's dropping in price by $35

      • Its price isn’t dropping, it’s just no longer going to be available as an expensive rental. New content being added to a streaming service isn’t a bargain.

Argh, I’ve been sucked into the debate!

  • +10

Was actually a decent movie for what it was. Emma stone is sexy too

    • That's a bit inappropriate…

      • Inappropriate but true

        • -1

She's totally legal dude stop stressing

          • @Willco88: I'm not stressing

Don't let the bold type fool you

            :P

          • -1

@Willco88: Sounds like you have a problem if age is the issue…

Metoo made some men realise it is inappropriate to sexualise coworkers without consent.

Who knew JV is a woke SJW applying this standard to entertainment workers? Wait, if I crop out the S and the last V in W?

edit: hashtag Metoo. Boldness to funny to fix.

            • +2

@This Guy: I have heard women at work talking to each other how they think some of the guys are hot but that's ok because they are women

              Double standards

              • -1

                @Mosher: lol.

There is a difference between someone 40kg' bigger than you talking about what they want to do with your genitals and someone 40kg's lighter who feels they need to cut their hair like a moron to get you to take them seriously.

      • You’re inappropriate

  • +3

I'm looking forward to this. Been too scabby to pay for premier access.

Also +1 for Emma Stone above

    • no way i'm paying for premier access, I'm sooo keen as is everyone else, for lockdown to be over as I want to watch stuff on the big screen and not just a tv, there is nothing like watching a movie in the cinemas.

  • Of course my subscription finishes in two days, lol.

Two movies I have wanted to watch wouldn't even work - id4 sequel and the Orient express… No idea why but have found Disney subscription to be pretty underwhelming and over priced.

  • +5

What's up with all this Disney plus content being shamelessly advertised on ozb despite not being a deal. You don't see posts about Netflix movies being added to the library.

    • +1

I can see you're new here haha

  • +5

When every other streaming services provide all of their movies in monthly subscription prices, Disney charging for a movie and later putting it into their streaming services which you are already paying for doesn't constitute a deal.

  • Very average movie. It has some fun moments, but the story would have benefited from at least 20 minutes left on the editing floor. Emma Thompson mostly comes off as a caricature of Miranda from Devil Wears Prada, and Emma Jnr tries too hard to instill bitterness and toxicity in the titular character. The argument of nature vs nurture also somewhat robs Cruella of her agency (see: Mulan). By the end of the movie, it's hard to tell if we are meant to root for Cruella or imagine a very different path for her. By then you probably don't care.

  • Not a deal is it? There's not enough new content being pushed, banking on nostalgia here!

  • +2

Who in their right mind pays $35 to rent a digital movie?

That said, if you paid $35 yesterday and then discovered it was included (free) today you'd be dirty AF.

    • +1

Not necessarily as who ever rented it in the 1st place doesn’t give a ~^ about money 😎

    • +1

100% agree. Disney executives are sipping champagne out of gold chalices for breakfast.

  • Downloaded it for the missus awhile ago

    Screw you Disney

  • +3

Wait, so you pony up for a Disney streaming subscription, and then find that you have to pay extra for Disney movies?

    • +1

      lmao
It's like amazon prime movies - a complete farce.

      • +1

At least amazon prime premium movies are the usual rental rate of ~$5 (I'd never pay this, but still), these "premium" Disney titles are 7x that price!

    • +1

Yep, so to watch this movie your minimum cost is $12 subscription plus $35 for the premium title. $47 to watch a movie on your own tv!

    • +1

You only have to pay extra for movies that are in cinema at that time, it is completely optional.

It's basically saying, "we get you don't want to go to the cinema while Covid is happening so here is the option of going to the cinema at home"

Or you can of course just wait until it is released on DVD, at which point it is free on Disney plus as always

  • +2

Was going to use a Dine&Discover voucher to see it at the cinemas, but didn't get the chance before lockdown started. I was planning on on waiting and watching it when it become free to stream but completely forgot about it. So thanks for the reminder OP!

  • Pretty trash movie nothing breathtaking…

  • Just watched now that it’s available on regular subscription, felt like a long movie but glad I watched it until the end
