Lowest price ever for these headphones according to camelcamelcamel. Reviews are mostly good when it comes to sound quality, but there seems to have been some build quality issues with these headphones.

Even though these have strong magnets I don't find them attractive

  • Anyone compared these to He-560s by chance?

  • +2

They look good but for the price I will say step up to the Sundara. They are absolutely leading in that class and price

    • Waiting on a price drop or CB for the Sundara.. Not sure if it'll ever come :(

      • +2

Good one. Yep there should be one coming. Or maybe black Friday. The Sundara is as it's name says "beautiful "

        • +1

I am waiting for some sort of discount on the Sundara as well. Best price seems to be Amazon at $539 and they have been sitting on that price forever. Does anyone know what they went for on last year's Black Friday sale on Amazon?

          • @trippy: If you can live without Amazon's warranty I'd suggest getting the Sundara from HiFiGo, only 489 AUD, can also get 5 USD off with HIFIGO5. May I add that I tried a pair in store last year, I would say better than the Sennheiser HD600s IMO.

            • @itsJamie: Wouldn't it be + GST?
Ends up being around the same when added.

              • +1

@illz: nah should be no GST, ordered an IEM off them a year ago, and got charged none. Maybe gst if you ordered over a grand of stuff.

                • @itsJamie: My guess is that you only pay GST if your parcel gets caught in customs. You may be lucky and get it through.

Dated recommendation, better value for money in the HIFIMAN HE400SE Stealth magnet version for $219, or the Sennheiser HD6XX for $300 delivered.

If you want a darker planar with more bass extension on a budget, there's the Takstar HF-580 via AliE for maybe $170-$200 during a sale via discounts and cashbacks and then the Aiva v2 pads for $25 on Taobao, or the Monoprice version with wood cups, the M570 @ $320-$350.

I think if you want open back planar right now, you're just looking at the HE400SE and the Sundara during Amazon BF deals depending on your budget, or the Takstar with the new pads if you want a darker sound.

          Apologies, "Karen"

I mean you'd go with 'they', but I'm a guy.

    • Have you actually tried them?, my HE400SE's sit permanently in a drawer as I found them very boring to listen to

      • These? I don't own them, but I've tried the HE400i 2020, which are virtually identical. Keep in mind there's been a few HE400SE versions, this being the latest.

They're fairly neutral with a touch of warmth, but compared to the rest of what you'd get out of budget planar, they've got some level of detail and aren't tonally offensive. Most planars have a suck out around 2kHz so they don't destroy your ears with resonance issues that typically exist there.

What's the rest of your setup? If you're plugging this straight into a sound card and listening to Spotify without turning up the detail, it's going to sound pretty bland as they need a fair bit of current.

        • How comfy are these?
I find my ATH M50x quite unbearable after 20 mins or so.
          Any recommendations for comfy planars?

          • +1

@Rorschach: Yes it's comfortable assuming you don't have an unusually wide/narrow or tall/short head/ear position.

M50X have comfort issues, as well as wonky frequency response and horrible soundstage width.

Keep in mind planar has its own drawbacks and that in this price range I would recommend you look into the Sennheiser HD6XX at $300 (you can find the HD650 to demo this locally).

Both are open back headphones (unlike the M50X, which is closed), so offer no isolation from outside sound, and the planar will leak more sound.

If you need a closed back headphone, look into the AKG K371 @ $170ish for a comfort, timbral, tonal, and soundstage upgrade, or you can also look into the Audeze Penrose @$400 for a big step up and wireless functionality.
