AF? As F#?
Imperial. Not only are they barely used but with most sizes you can just use the closest metric.
Thanks. I knew you meant Imperial but I did not know they were also called American Fractional.
Agreed, have had a giant AF/M set for around 18 years now - have never touched the imperial side besides working on my vehicles and friends when they need a hand.
They're pretty much deadweight, unless working on something 50+ years old.
It's quite remarkable how many sets keep including imperial sizes. I haven't seen an imperial fastener in use for many years, and I don't plan on paying for half a kit of wasted resources.
Agreed. I special order Kincrome sets that are metric only just to avoid having half a useless set laying around.
Imperial, sigh. I work with old diesel motors and even half the time I remove the imperial bolts with my metric sets.
wait for the 198 piece kit, much better!
Thanks OP! Don't forget to get the $10 loyalty credit as well.
What do people generally buy these for? General automotive use in the garage or throwing in the boot on a road trip?
I want something for the road trip option rather than packing a big tool bag but it seems to have an excessive amount of ratchets and no "essentials" like pliers, knife, actual screwdrivers/hex keys etc?I like this Kincrome one, less pieces but seems more practical for getting out of trouble? Never get half price deals on Kincrome stuff though. Is the Toolpro 198 piece a better option?
For what you said you need, I’d get the 198 piece but don’t know when it would be on sale. I don’t think it’s worth getting the Kinchrome. Too pricey and ToolPro comes with Lifetime Warranty anyways. Only thing is that the 198 piece would be quite big.
Anyone knows the reason they generally skip socket size 20?
I can only theorise that the sizes are spaced out to reduce the amount of rounded fasteners. That is, a 20mm socket would fit relatively snugly on a 19mm bolt head enough so that you might mistake it, but you’d greatly increase the chance of rounding it.
In my experience 19mm and 21mm are relatively common bolt sizes, but I can scarcely remember ever encountering a 20mm.
Go search for a 20mm fastener and a vehicle its on and report back
Any recommendation for an impact socket set?
But as with most of these kits, up to half what you are buying you are unlikely to ever use because they are AF.
