MDF is prone to humidity / moisture. Might need to make some improvements to the shelf if you plan to use it long term.

Is there a product you can coat it with to make it last a bit longer? I've seen some pretty warped ones on marketplace

      • +3

I used some mould killer on it when it first popped up and hasn’t come back…

      • +5

Paint or varnish or even spray paint, especially the edges of mdf to seal the pores.

        • Thanks!

      • +3

        Paint.
        No joke.

Find a mistint of taubmans endure at bunnings and enjoy the added mould protection.

        • That's smart about the mistint. Where do they keep those? On the clearance racks in the middle aisle of the stores or in the paint section? I've never seen them but it makes sense they exist.

Paint. Any paint. Ive had the kids use their own craft paints and ended up with shelves in red blue and yellow. Ive used marked down random bunnings paints.
        It all works.

      humidity / moisture

      No problem in SA.

      • far less than Qld… but I run a dehumidifier regularly to protect my best tools (kept in the shed, not the house) from corrosion.

        • Cheaper just to give them a wipe down after use with an oily rag wouldn't it?

      • would be an issue in winter for some sheds

    • In FNQ the MDF shelves lasted ~3 months in the garage before succumbing to copious amounts of mould.

  • How do you get the 20% off?

  • Thank you, got one!

Anybody else getting errors on the SCA website? Specifically, it won't let me select my local shop and is saying "Click & Collect not available at this time."

Website is also running at a snails pace.

    • +1

Yes sir, I click view cart and dies.

      • +1

Website appears to be struggling a lot.

      • +1

I'm also getting errors. SCA had the dick

    • +1

Looks click and collect doesnt work for anything on the site. One way to turn away 99% of customers during a sale

    • I think the shelves might be out of stock in most stores.

    • Site is now working as intended. Was sweatin' I'd miss out!

Consider if you want MDF in the long term. I bought these from stratco and they've more than done the job. Admittedly there are gaps within the shelves which may be a disadvantage for some compared to MDF, but no upkeep required is a universal plus

I have the same style from Bunnings. The metal mesh shelves are great for storing plastic tubs and no need to worry about moisture or mould ruining the MDF.

      • Same with me, they are very average quality but for the price they are ok. I use them to hold 3d printer filament etc, does fine

    • 220kg distributed capacity across the whole unit
      Heavy duty construction

It works out to be 44kg per tier which should not be for heavy duty unless I miss out something.

$4 more, 15kg less and missing 310mm length.

  • Bought 3 for $120. Thanks OP.

  • any recommendations for outdoor shelving that can weather rain and sun?

  • I'm surprised that for these style of shelves there's not ready plywood shelf kits to replace the MDF. MDF is no bueno

    • Price the difference between plywood and mdf.
You wont see plywood because it costs more.
I picked up 4 or 5 shelves last hard rubbish clean up and just filled them in with random bits of wood.
If i wanted them to last forever id use marine ply but a sheet of that would cost a few shelves.

  • I have bought many many of these shelves, and 70% of the MDF has now been thrown out due to mold. Spend the extra and don't get MDF shelves.

    • Or paint /seal the shelves. Good way to use up leftover paint.

  • If anyone is selling a spare one of these in Sydney let me know

  • I have had this for 3 years…

Have no idea what MDF is, but I've no issues with mould. The shelves look like they could be prone to it but in my bedroom, they've been fine.

    • mould may not be an issue but off gassing from MDF might be another health hazard you are exposed to.

      • Yikes…

Seems like nothing is safe these days.

Anyways not gonna fuss, I've been fine.

    • Have no idea what MDF is

Medium Density Fibreboard. It's what all cheap furniture and most kitchens are made of.

  • Set these up for Alfred and pass em ontu the neighbours!

  • Are these better than the Bunnings 150kg rating Shelf?

    • +1

      They're the same

  • Bought 2 online from Noosa store C&C, received phone call stock on hand was zero & system was wrong…. Now to wait for refund 🙄

  • Looks like I left my run too late, can’t find any stock in Sydney or anywhere near Nowra. ☹️

  • That’s a big load

  • Just picked up mine, I can see a lot of peeps ordered, it was stacked at front corner shop.
