1640

Previously required a Netflix subscription to watch but is now free to watch via Youtube.

We tweet, we like, and we share— but what are the consequences of our growing dependence on social media? As digital platforms increasingly become a lifeline to stay connected, Silicon Valley insiders reveal how social media is reprogramming civilization by exposing what’s hiding on the other side of your screen.

AVAILABLE ON YOUTUBE UNTIL SEPT. 30TH.
Now is the time to share the film and have a discussion about repairing our broken information ecosystem. If you’re organizing a group screening, be sure to register your event for a grant of permission and get access to unique resources including discussion guides and new classroom tools.

Ironic that it's available on a social media platform

Kind of…. but consider cigarette warnings are on the outside of the packet.

      • As sid1 was saying….

        • +2

You don't put the "Danger - No swimming" sign in the middle of the desert… unless of course it's a lovely oasis. :)

        • +1

Gotta reach the demographic somehow.. how better than using the platforms they're talking about lol

    • +5

Comments disabled then it won't be social at all. Just media platform.

    • +1

      "It's like raaaaaiiinnnnn……"

    • That's where their target audience is.

  • +3

and you can use youtube-dl to download it to watch later

    • Is youtube dl a well-known method in downloading youtube videos? Site seems kinda sketchy but reading about it in wiki makes it seem legit.

      • -6

It runs straight off the command line so totally legit

        • Does this apply to other programs?
Are programs are fine as long as they don't have a GUI?

          • +2

@ihfree: Yep, viruses are only dangerous when they pop up and ask for bitcoin.

            🤷‍♂️

            • +2

@cydia9k: Thanks for the tip. I'm being asked for something called ETH, so I assume i'm good.

          • +3

@ihfree: No, that's nonsense. You always need to be careful where you download programs from. In this case, get it from the official website.

        • +1

I presumed this was a piss take

          • +1

@RichardMelbourne: Seriously, asuming a headless program is 'totally legit' is a new one for me - don't do this :)

Also for anyone uncomfortable with the command line, youtube-dlg is the same thing with a nice interface.

      • I used YTD (youtubedownloader) and '4K downloader'

downloaded a copy to watch later using a free copy of VideoProc that was posted on ozbargain

Got rid of FB and Insta before I watched this. This movie re-enforced that idea…

    • +8

I liked your comment. The first taste of karma is free..

    • hi do you have any tips on how to do this?

      • +10

I just called Zuckers and he made it all happen. Really nice and understanding kind of guy.

      • +5

Ive done the same, just delete the apps of your phone and don't use them again, I keep the Facebook Messenger app to be able to keep in touch with friends but deleted the Facebook and Instagram parent apps.

Feel much better, now I have so much more free time to browse ozbargain as much as a zombie as I did with Facebook newsfeed :)

No one is going to miss you from FB/insta, they'll soon forget you even posted stuff or that you commented/liked their photos and get distracted by their own news feed.

—Edit: FYI an extra tip, start turning off notifications on apps on your phone that appear that or not important, as the film points out, you may be enticed back in very easily. Also I set an automatic do not disturb from 10:30PM to 9:00AM on my phone and added my family and partners family as an exception in case of emergency.

        • +2

I keep the Facebook Messenger app

Then you're still part of the machine. Find another way if you want to give hope to humanity.

          • @1st-Amendment: Completely agree, doesn't help that I have a Google phone and Gmail account. I use brave and duckduckgo to slightly help, also turned off the Google News on my phone so I can't see any news updates.

I've switched to Signal and have had minor success in others migrating too, but unfortunately some are still too resistant and won't move.

You're right in saying they still have a hold of me, but they're gripping on by a couple fingers, not both hands. which is still a better outcome than not making any change.

Get your friends & family onto Signal

    • When I mentioned Signal last time to my family, they recalled Signal.

  • Many of the social media platforms are basically porn sites.

  • Normally not a fan of documentaries, but this and Game Changers are definitely worth a watch!

  • +2

All it does is highlights the problem that everyone already knows, providing no solutions. Social media is just a tool, people just need to be self-aware and either realise that social media is a way of the future or just stop using it.

    • I thought there were uncensored social platforms, as some people get their comments silenced or even get de-platformed for comments that may be contrary to government ordered opinion keeping.

  • Thanks, shared it via tweet.

  • Thanks muchly. Apparently a very good watch.
