How I Got Scammed by The Good Guys

I'll try to keep story short and explain why I'm NOT going to shop with TGG anymore.

Couple of weeks ago I purchased google smoke alarms from TGG and qualified for a gift voucher worth $40 which I received as well. Voucher was use by date so last Wednesday was the last day to use it. I jumped on site and saw SMEG kitchen mixer for $279 (it turns out that deal was published on ozbargain the day after https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/643737. Now, I wasn't aware that might be price error, cause I just sorted by price and that was the one that looked good. I jumped on the deal and paid $239 + $40 voucher.

Morning after I got confirmation mail and they took money from my card. Later that day I got mail that is ready for pickup. I live in Melbourne, and that shop is Highpoint Maribyrnong. So I went there to pickup and the got told by the guy working there that there is a problem with order, that they are out of stock, and to call headoffice for further instruction (they gave me number which turns out just to be customer support). I spent more that 1hr waiting for someone to pickup which never did (later i found out their average score on productreview is 1.7).

So I called the shop directly to see what is happening with my order.

By some admin in the shop, I've been told that there was an price error and that per their T&C they can't proceed with my order. That really pissed me off because I got confirmation mail and ready to pickup mail. They made me drive during lockdown for no reason, just to be told that their manager saw mistake right before collection and manually override the order. On my questions that they had multiple points to correct and cancel my order before I had to drive there (was there around 5pm), and why send ready to pickup mail, I just got some fake apology and blaming their system.

After unpleasant conversation I noticed in the mail that they gave me $30 apology voucher. Money was reversed to my card today but never got reimbursed for that $40 voucher that I had. So I ended up with fake apology and -$10 out of my pocket (not to mention my time and fuel used)

Anyway ACCC has been notified of this and we'll see what they can do about it.

If you also had issues with them I strongly encourage you to contact ACCC

Sorry for the long post.

    Wot the.

not to mention my time and fuel used

And what do you expect GG's to do about this?

    • +1

      Thanks for asking. Cheers.

    • +1

Hi, thanks for the question. TBH I don't expect anything, I guess I should be happy that at least I got partially refunded.

    • -3

They could insist the County Court impose on them absurd punative damages.

    • +3

To honour the item they said is ready to be picked up.

They missed their opportunity to cancel the order at that time IMO.

  • +4

ACCC won't do shit. Sony took over 6 months to repair my PS4 controller last year which went up in smoke. The PS4 was was completely unusable during that time. ACCC did not do anything, not even an acknowledgement.

    • Sorry to hear that. I guess we are in the mercy of retailers.

  • +5

Did you tell them about the $40 voucher?? Because it sounds like you didn’t.

    • I did, but they also can see that in their system.

      • +12

so that was the entire conversation?

        "gimme my $40 back"

"I can see it in our system"

        "Thanks, bye?"

After unpleasant conversation I noticed in the mail that they gave me 30$ apology voucher. Money was reversed to my card today but never got reimbursed for that 40$ voucher that I had. So I ended up with fake apology and -10$ out of my pocket (not to mention my time and fuel used)

Did you call the store / TGG help desk and tell them about the voucher you used when you placed the order? Or do you want one of us here to help you make the call ?

    • -2

Thanks for offering but I don't need anyone to call on my behalf. I was waiting to see if I'm going to be refunded or not.

      • +1

You wanted a cash refund for a gift voucher?

  • +19

Was your kitchen mixer really all that essential to break lockdown for?

  • +2

    Wowee …

You created a troll new account for this … but waited four days to post this clanger?

    • Hi, how do you create fake account?

      • +12

I wouldn't know, but it seems that you do.

The two comments you've made prior to this post … referencing "bikies" and "Camry being the official OzBargain's car" don't exactly scream someone's that's just lobbed here.

  • +9

Sorry, but this is not scam.

This is a mismanagement and awful communication from their part but I'd like to believe that TGG will be happy to give you a new $40 voucher. That's a reasonable solution, and probably the best you can get.

What have they said when you asked for the $40 to be refunded as a new voucher for you to use?

  • You didn't get scammed. Stuffed around? Maybe.

Out of pocket on the voucher, yes; but you left the voucher to its last valid day to redeem and spent it on a pricing error.

Have you contacted TGG customer support about the voucher?

not to mention my time and fuel used

LOL. Would you ask for compensation for my time and fuel used if you had successfully collected the item?

    • +2

Keep in mind I did not know that was price error. Judging by that every product is possible price error.

      • +1

Have you contacted TGG customer support about the voucher?

  • +12

"They made me drive during lockdown"

    Haha

    • +4

No one made him. He just didn't want to pay for delivery, but was happy to risk a fine. ;)

  • +14

Perhaps you could commence a lawsuit arguing that the name of the business is misleading.

    • Haha good one!!!

    • +16

This is the most blatant case of false advertising since my suit against the film 'The Neverending Story'

  • +6

Is it possible to get the last 2 minutes of my life back?

    • +9

Better make a forum post about how this scammed two minute of your life

      • +5

can't believe that made you read this during lockdown. You are owed compensation for your time and electricity usage.

  • +2

Karma for not sharing the deal to Ozb when you found out about it

    • lol shame on me, but it was around midnight when I saw that and was at work by the time someone published it.

  • so how are you feeling now since you let it all out..

    • -1

The same i did before posting this thread. This is just to warn people what they can expect as a customer from TGG.

  • Sooo… they only refunded you the $239??

    • yup

  • +2

In my experience, they tend to refund the store credit you used as a gift card or another store credit a few days after the cancellation. Just either wait a few more days or contact their head office number and they'll help you out. Hardly worth an ACCC investigation.

    • Hi, thanks for reply. I've just spent 30min waiting on the line and didn't get through. It seems impossible to establish connection with TGG.

  • +13

This thread: how i found out people don't understand the difference between a scam and a bad experience

    • +1

Fine line between being scammed and being ripped off even if it is only $10 and lost time. I appreciate the warning and will be wary of the value of the bad guy's vouchers in future offerings they make. It is also worth knowing that their customer service offering is almost non existent if something goes wrong.

  • +10

That’s a bloody outrage it is. You should take it all the way to the Prime Minister

    Oiiiii SCOMOOOOO

    • no no I'll ask to talk to the manager first!! :)

    • +2

100% enjoy seeing this Simpsons quote for occasions such as these posts.

    • Sorry, I don't do refunds mate..

  • +2

Its been more like The bad guys, the past 5 years.. been downhill for me also

no common sense when talking to these loons

    • Sorry to hear that

  • +14

I got scammed by you. That heading is click bait.

  • +2

And you joined OZB just to get that off your chest?

    • There is already an answer to your question in the comments. Cheers

  • +9

And here I thought the expats in Afghanistan are doing it tough… you sir have real problems

  • +1

I try my best to purchase at Office Works as their return policy and customer service seems to be better than the rest of pack.

    • It's a shame they don't sell white goods. The only other retailer I can think of that has a lot of goodwill is Myer, but their range has dwindled over the years.

    • Just don't ask for a price match in some of their lesser stores. ;-)

  • +1

All bloody same JB hifi, TGG, Harvery Norman are just a peice of shit, especially on their warrenty BS, even on extended warrenty they are BS Scammers honestly mate

    • +2

HN are the worst by far!

  • +1

I would suspect the only thing ACCC can do for you now (Since you were refunded all of your original payment) would be in getting the $40 gift voucher back.

But since you're not shopping with GG anymore, that's not going to help.

  • +6

I'll try to keep story short

Narrator: Little did he know, he would not honour that promise.

    • +2

Read that in Morgan Freemans voice for some reason.

    • All he promised was to try, he never said he would succeed

  • +4

You drove during lockdown to pick up a Kitchen Mixer? No wonder we can't have nice things and no wonder highpoint is regularly on the exposure lists. TGG Highpoint was listed during the last lockdown.

    • -2

Call the Copper's . But the north west side is always the worst as they can't follow simple rules .
BTW lockdown or no lockdown I don't give a `^ about an expiring Bad Guy voucher .

  • +2

Perfect example of why I could never work in retail

  • +1

How was this essential travel? I don’t get the click and collect in lockdown arrangement unless it is for the 5 reasons you can leave your home🤷‍♂️

    • +1

Maybe someone who needs to bake cakes? make bread? maybe the OP is gluten intolerant and has to make their own bread, their existing Mix has given up the ghost and on top of that they have an OOS injury to their arms that prevent them kneading the dough to make the bread successfully?

      • Ah yes, that’s quite a common complaint as I understand 🤣🤣🤣

  • He should not have driven in lockdown but most of the other comments show what (profanity) get on here. Useless creeps who don’t try to help and think they are funny.

  • +1

Does anyone in this world just accept what happens to them in daily life anymore without continually winging about it all over social media.
Getting time to shut all platforms down and just do more fishing

    • Covid boredom perhaps as not much else to do.

    • The irony of whinging about a whinge…

  • +3

TGG "Click and Collect" is a joke. Wife drove there to pickup goods and sent an SMS as instructed but nobody came out the store and she had to go inside and track down some staff to help her.

  • +3

The so called Good Guys, are BAD GUYS!
I have had some trouble with them on a number of occasions.

Everyone is all smiles, UNTIL you pay for the item, then they don't want to know you.

  • +3

If they tell you it's ready for pick up, then they've had ample opportunity to pick up the error and they should honour it…

Thanks for the heads up OP.
