Yes. VoLTE will be needed for calls then, and VoLTE is firmware dependent.

The SIMs in mine are good til December, gonna snag a "free" mini burrito from Guzman on each one and then turf the SIMs. Cheapo clearance phones make great walkie talkies for the kiddo with a quick download of the Messenger APK, no Google account needed which makes the setup process a lot easier.
