Samson Meteor USB Microphone $59 (Normally $79) @ JB Hi-Fi

500

Great little mic for zoom, slack, teams calls. Connects via USB port and has neat little mute button that works wonders during conference calls.

I purchased one a year ago for my Mac and very happy with it. Just purchased another for my wife as her laptop audio was total rubbish and noted the $20 off sale.

Available for click&collect $0 or delivery $4.99.

I also bought one of these, I've had it for 6-12 months. Sound quality is great and haven't had any issues.

    How small is it

Size doesn't matter (its how you EQ it)

Not sure if I want to find out how you thought of those two comparisons…

How's this go with picking up typing in Teams calls? Being a condenser mic usually these pick up absolutely everything in the environment.

    • I have one and put a generic ebay sock on it. Was great after that. Its also able to be mounted to a goose neck which I found very helpful. It's a great mic and at this price im not sure what beats it.

    • It has a cardioid pickup pattern so it won't pick up everything - it will be weighted towards the front or top (not sure about this particular model).

I use a blue yeti nano with cardioid pickup pattern, I have my keyboard almost directly behind it (i.e. mic between me and the keyboard between my arms, and it doesn't seem to pick it up at all - although I'm on the MX Keys which is definitely on the quieter side to begin with.

Software options for noise cancelling have come a long way. As I said I use a blue yeti nano and with the built in Blue software with my microphone I'm able to cancel out my bike trainer noise 100% by setting an appropriate expander & gate setting (effectively reducing volume or auto mute below a certain dB).

There's also the Nvidia RTX voice if you have a modern Nvidia GPU for extreme environments: https://youtu.be/Q-mETIjcIV0?t=439

Even Teams has a fairly reasonable option built in now: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/reduce-background…

Does it come in black. I like them black.

      Apparently in larger sizes (https://musiciannerd.com/articles/best-samson-microphones)

This one is in chrome - it has three foldable legs with little rubber feet but also has a standard thread on the bottom for mounting on a boom or gooseneck.

Sound quality is great. It has an audio out so I plugged a logitech speaker into it for Teams meetings - works brilliantly.

Mute and audio out volume on the front. Connects to computer's USB.

  • Thanks. Got one

  • nice. now I can look like Elvis Presley on my morning standup

like a sane person for once

  • How is this Vs the 25$ Kmart condenser?

  • +2

Note that it has mini-USB connector. Yes, it's that old.

    • Into the mic… the other end is USB-A.

  • Is this better than a Blue Yeti Nano?

    • Depends. The biggest difference is that the Blue Yeti has both cardioid and omnidirectional pickup patterns - this one is a cardioid pickup only. If it'll just be you speaking into the mic this isn't really a concern.

  • This is actually a pretty good mix with some decent features. Good buy at $59

  • … if you want to do the Kogan x Klarna 4th Payment Waived deal + Kogan First sub/trial you can get this mic delivered for $56.25

    • +2

lol I don't think $3.75 is worth it for a credit check

      • +1

        or supporting kogan

I bought one of these roughly a decade ago, used it pretty heavily for a few years before changing to a dynamic mix but I can attest to this thing being a great little microphone.
Mine still works after all this time too.

    • As someone looking to buy a condenser microphone, why did you switch to a dynamic?

      • +1

I mainly use it to podcast, and dynamics are much better at rejecting sounds that are even a short distance from the mic. A slight reduction in the sound quality generally, but it saved me a good 10 minutes every episode that I’d normally spend fine tuning noise reduction and chopping out extraneous background noise.

        • Dynamics reducing background noise is a myth. They just work on a lower gain which is why you have to eat the mic, if you lowered the gain on your condenser and did the same you'd get the same result.

Dynamics are more durable and less vulnerable to moisture so they're used in things like concerts for that reason.

Just a tip if you're using this in Zoom: enable "Original Sound". It gets rid of all the weird post-processing of the audio and the result is really clean

  • +1

It looks good but for pretty much the same price you can have a neewer with stand and arm and shock mount. It's usb as well

    • Link please?

@mhaqs: Apparently the Kmart gaming mic is decent and is a variant of the Neewer NW-8000 USB based on this persons review. He has links to the kmart gaming mic and the Neewer NW-8000 USB in his description. Keep in mind his amazon links are a affiliate links. I am not sure if the Neewer NW-8000 is better than the Neewer NW-700 or what the difference is. Hopefully someone more knowledgable can answer that as my kid is looking for something decent around the $40 mark

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1M84sgLRmF0

Watched a couple other review on the Kmart $39 mic and they been positive for now.

          • @mhaqs: I have that one and the thing is amazing for the price. Buy it

          • @mhaqs: The price of these is $150+, how is this comparable?

            • @dealmaker: They are now sold out. Wait for them to go on sale again.

        • Thanks @sian72 and Raj09.

Which one of the 3 options on that link do u suggest? I dont really need a headphone but I am inkling towards the $49.39 kit becuase it appears to be usable without any additional power enhancements.
If you think the sound card kit instead ($34.99) is good for use with a computer without power enhancement, then I would go for that. This sound card listing says upgraded mic too, while the others dont say that, so hopefully that means something too.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

  • I was looking at them and I needed two. Thanks OB!!!

  • thanks, need them for the ACT lockdown

  • Tempting anything similar (price range) that might be better for gaming?

  • I picked this up 10 years ago :)

For Teams / Zoom calls - I wouldn't expect a direct improvement in quality since audio seems heavily processed to the point everyone sounds the same - but it'll probably pick up less background noise and have less buzzing.

For content creation - you need to be as close to the mic as possible (i.e., <50cm away) otherwise your voice sounds a little bit like you're under water. When I first got it, I thought it was an amazing mic, then I picked up a Blue Yeti which was only marginally better, and then a Tascam DR-05X which is amazing (but not a USB mic).

For $59 though, I don't think it's great value, and USB mics seem way overpriced. But I don't know what else to recommend at this price range :(

  • Thanks, OP. got one.

    Price beat at OW

  • Mrs has been using this mic for live online presentations, pre-recording courses, recording voice overs for apps, etc. for the past 18 months without fault. (Very clear and natural sound)

  • Cheers OP. Bought one. Looks like I'll be teaching Maths from home for a while longer so this will come in handy.

  • Would this be good for dictation? I am looking for a mic that can do speech to text.
On that note, anyone has a good app/program suggestion for Windows?
    Thanks!

  • Officeworks was willing beat to $56.05 for me, the staff had come across the JB price already by the time I got there.
