Woolworths Prepaid Mobile SIM $2 + $29 Recharge for $15.50 or $12.60 with Everyday Rewards Card

440

Thanks to Azza's comment on this page http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/64058. I tried today and the deal is still working. It was supposed to be expired last month and http://woolworthsmobile.com.au/woolworths-prepaid-cap also doesn't mention about the deal anymore.

Woolworths Mobile $29 recharge gives you 5GB data + $500 ($250 to any optus mobile within Australia & $250 to any network except Pivotel) with 45 days expiry. They use Optus Network.

You must purchase the $2 SIM together with the $29 recharge in order to get the discount. After the discount the price is $15.50 (without everyday rewards card) or $12.60 (with everyday rewards card).

Good for those who missed out last time or those who want more recharges.

The expiry date for the recharge voucher is still 1st Nov 2012. I assume the deal will expire once that batch of vouchers run out?

Credits goes to Azza.

  • i thought everyday rewards card discount only worked at big w!?

did they ask you to fill out a form for the sim purchase?

    • +2

I think everyday rewards card works on woolworths, big w, dick smith, BWS.

They may or may not ask you to fill out the form. They didn't ask me to do so this time but they did for the previous time.

    • See previous deal - 10% off for Woolworths Mobile at Wooworths.
Yes, always need to fill out form for new SIM.
I use this with my 3G Tablet

  • +2

$12.60* with everyday rewards, whats the expire date on the recharge voucher?
EDIT: Soz you included it in the post. Cheers

    • +1

Thanks for point out. It is $12.60 not $12.80. Expiry date for the voucher is 1-11-12 which is same as last time.

  • I got this last time. Cheapest mobile plan out there (for a year anyway). Plus the performance on the Optus network is far superior to my old Virgin plan (even though it too was on Optus. My girlfriend has an Optus plan and my Woolworths mobile data download speeds are the same as hers. So this is a highly recommended plan to get. On top of all that, the call centre staff etc are just Optus staff, so it feels no different to a standard Optus account.

    • The prepaid plan lasts only 45 days. Is there another plan or option for 1 year?

      • Only option is recharging with either $29 or $49 caps up to every 45 days, for as long as you want.
See http://www.woolworthsmobile.com.au/ for details. Only $29 cap is on special with a SIM.

      • As stated below- I bought a year's worth of recharges last Novemeber, for less than $100, with 5gb of data per month.

        • Nice move, but would actually have 5GB per month and a half?

  • What is the best way to use this deal? Can you purchase 5 or so SIM+$29 packs to cover you till 1 November? Do people roll over the phone number to the new SIM each 45 days or just use the recharge for another 45 days (and throw out the other 4 SIMs)?

    • +6

Buy multiples & just use the recharges for another 45 days on same SIM.
All this was discussed in last deal.

  • Thanks.
My Telstra contact expires in May… so I will buy 4 packs to last me till November.

  • +2

I'd love to know why the voucher expiry date is "stuck" on 01 November 2012 !

  • The expiry date for the recharge voucher is still 1st Nov 2012.

No point buying any more then :-)

    • +2

possibly Woolies agreed with Optus to sell x many recharges and thats why still cheapish ie: haven't hit their target yet ????

      (pure speculation of course)

  • +1

    AHA! 1 november 2012

Yes i have a sneaking suspicion that woolies may close down the mobile plan thingy at that time, they shut down the old 2g? late last year.

Maybe they are not making billions profit each year from it

Something is up or i am 100% wrong

still a bit fishy i reckon

    • Come off it. They just launched the 3G to replace the 2G that is being phased out. They spent a fortune advertising this deal & selling 1/2 price to get new customers. And you think on the basis of a recharge date of a special deal, that they would close down a new service??? On that basis, milk marketers must be going out of business every day, as there is a lot of milk expiring on the same date. Don't all recharge vouchers have a use by date? If you buy them around the same time, it is likely they will have the same date. With a probability of 99.99% you are most likely 100% wrong!

    • +1

Nah - Woolies employ clairvoyants to predict the future in their sales war with Coles. They all say the World will end on 1 november 2012. So, Woolies only sells mobile phone recharges that expire on that date.

      • +2

I bought a recharge voucher at woolworths today for virgin mobile and the use by date was 1 Nov 2012 … bit strange

        • +2

          01.11.12……RUN

    • +1

Boring, but its probably the contract end date for Woolies with Optus, before next contact starts. Same use-by date for Virgin & Woolies, so date is probably determined by Optus.

      • Could be Bruce…Could be…anyone got an update as to why ?

  • -1

I already got a wollies sim.. is the deail on just the credit ast well?

    • nah gotta get a new sim as well (keep as a spare and use your voucher to top up your existing)

    • Not on the recharge itself. You need to get the SIM and recharge voucher in one transaction to get the discount. You don't need the SIM (throw away or give back to wollies) and just use the voucher on your old SIM.

      • +1

I guess but everytime i get a new sim they have to do the whole background security check which is anoying

        • not for me just asked to see my licence (no form filled in at all) @ woolies yesterday

    • If you have a spare mobile, register the extra SIM, get a number, & use in that mobile to receive incoming calls. Have been doing that for months. Handy spare number for businesses that insist you give a number.

  • Where is this deal advertised?

    • Its a secret! Apparently they did not shut the deal down last month, after the advertised end date. So enjoy their mistake.

    • i would like to know why they aren't advertising this deal (maybe Coles has a deal coming too… rubs hands together)

  • +3

DOH! I just went to DSE and bought a straight out recharge voucher -.-
NOTE TO SELF: Check Ozbargain before ANY purchase.

  • Just got a micro sim and voucher and the expiry date on the green sim packet is Jan 1 2013.
expiry date on the voucher in nov 1 2012

    hmmmm

    thank you for the info

  • I don't know if this is just some local peculiarity, but at my nearest Woolies in Perth, this exact deal is being advertised on the PA system continually. Just heard it yesterday, fairly certain it was playing last week too.

    • OK was at my local this morning and they played the ad…-NO DEAL-
      strange business retailing for sure.

      • Just bought 2 from BigW. No one knows about it, I asked them to scan one and it's still active

        • Was only discussing "the ad" not the bargain
          (sorry if that was confusing):)

  • working fine for me. expiry date on the voucher is also 1/11/2012. Thanks guys!
will get more SIM bundle tomorrow!

  • No international minutes :(

    • +1

That's not true, I remember using up all my remaining call credit on an international call. I wasn't able to use up the Optus Money though, no friends on Optus mobiles.

      • I have one friend on Optus, and she's a girl. My mates think its pretty sus how we call each other all the time..

        • +1

PowerB and Optus Chick, sitting in a tree…

  • Thanks alot for sharing, I was going to buy the full $29 recharge :p

  • -1

    umm 12.6 for 5 gigs :), pity its optus…..

How does it get down to 12.6 anyway? i see it on the receipt…. just would have thought the 10% comes after the half price.

    • See discussion in last deal - 10% comes off full price of $29 recharge only.
      So $2.90 off 1/2 price of $15.50 = $12.60 (Woolies Maths)

    • While the coverage is not as good as Telstra, it's pretty good, as I discovered using this offer and Amaysim. Of course your individual circumstances may be different.

      • yea the speed is tolerable taking into consideration how cheap this is!! just gotta remember to keep my connections alive given 1mb increment rule.

Good deal! wonder for how much longer?

  • works on Woolworth Townhall

  • Its a shame the recharges have the same expiry. I was prepped to buy another years worth :D

    • May be another offering by then.
1 Nov voucher expiry will take you through to mid Jan 2013.

      • Correction, mid-December!

  • As this deal is continuing, it may affect the prices for those selling these on eBay.
eg Two $29 recharges current bid $26 (no SIM) with nearly 9 hours left

  • LOL to myself at all the OzBargainers marking off 45 day periods on their calendar. (I did too.)

    • Don't worry, Optus give you plenty of notice before the time runs out :-)

      • No, I meant to figure out how many SIMs to buy to get up to 1 Nov.

        • And the answer to that (assuming you do not use all credit before 45days) and recharging on last day you can, taking your use through to early/mid January 2013…
          10.5 months divided by 1.5months/recharge = 7.
(I used a digital approach - counted the months on my fingers.)

        • Hmm, if you recharge on the last day, 1 Nov, doesn't that take you to mid-Dec? Did I miss something?

        • Oops - time machine mode set. Of course, mid December.
So 9.5 months = at least 6 recharges.
          Thanks greenpossum!

  • got one at liverpool

  • tried it, this should work with an optus wifi modem right?

bought 2.. if it doesnt work, il throw them into my phone..

anyone had luck with them working with optus modems?

  • Same deal in Woolworths Marrickville Metro .. great .. picked up 10 ….!!!!!!!!!!!

    • +1

10 is way too many if the expiry is 1st Nov 2012

  • Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows if it works with a Blackberry? Like the Optus turbocap does?

  • -1

No tethering…. But still a great deal… Thanks OP

    • +1

Where did you get that info? This was discussed last time deal was posted. I have tethered no problems. Others have.

      • Hmmm will have to give them a call… For some reason it no work!!

        • +1

My experience & others in last deal was they tell you things like…
          You can't tether
You can't use this with a tablet
Optus gave the same response, which was wrong.
Try Whirlpool forums under Woolworth's mobile or your device for real advice!

    • +1

Please don't tell my Android phone that or it will stop tethering. :P

  • Just wondering can you get micro sim? A friend just want to use the data on ipad or there are others cheap option?

    • +2

Yes, Woolies stock these now. grog got one (posted 17:08).

    • yes, but you may need to ask for it. Most of them seem to stock them behind the counter.

    • +1

Only micro sims left at Lane Cove. Was upset until I remembered I don't really need the sim since I already have one.

  • Maybe a silly question, i have not phoned support yet

    Q. where do i find the default SIM card pin they supplied with the sim?

I want to set my own sim card pin/lock

    htc wildfire s

    tnx

    • Often 0000 or 1234, can't remember as I changed my code long ago.

  • I've seen this somewhere before…. AAAAAges ago

got mine today! expires JAN 1st 2013

    • That is great news if true - need verification!! :)

  • imket … Is that date on the green sim packet or on the receipt for the recharge?

My micro sim green package had that expiry date jan 1 2013 [ back of pack, bottom right white panel]

but the voucher was the same as the others

  • +1

my sim pack and recharges both expire 1 Nov 12
picked up 4 this morning. $50.40 for 6 months. pretty good.

  • Picked up 5 at DSE Brisbane today (EXP 1 JAN 2013). DSE math is different to Woolies math - got charged $14.05 each (with Everyday Rewards).

    • Sorry but fairly pointless postof date unless you clarify whether date of SIM activation or date of voucher expiry….

      • The DSE recharge voucher does not have a printed expiry date. The green SIM card packet has 1 JAN 2013 on the lower right hand corner.

        • Can anyone else confirm if Dick Smith recharge vouchers don't have expiry dates? This is kind of big news, means you can buy as many vouchers as you want.

  • Many credits to Azza, bought 3 at Glenelg Dick Smiths $14.05 each. No expiry date printed on voucher but expiry on pkt is 1st September 2012

  • Do the DSE vouchers have "woolworths mobile" at the top or maybe optus ??

  • Question!!!

Does this work with USB Wireless Modems or Wifi Wireless Modems with Optus(locked)?

    Thanks..

  • Great news, i bought a stack of these last time. Didn't have to show id, or fill anything out for any of the ones i bought last time (multi transactions, across multi stores) It does annoy me though, as you have to tell Woolies people how their own deals work (most are cluesless to ther offers)

Any Optus locked device should work, as the carrier is still Optus.

    • +3

I think the people who work at these supermarkets are harried and have to pick up things on the fly. I don't think I want to change jobs with them. So go easy on them, they're just cogs in the system.

  • Interesting. I bought a couple more at Woolies. Expiry date on these are 1/11/12 BUT the previous ones - bought at Dick Smith have NO expiry date. Will keep the DS ones to last. Anyone else see the same on their DS purchased recharges

    • I haven't bought any from DSE yet.Are the Dick Smith ones $14.05 as Badarz said with Everyday Rewards or $12.60?

  • ozpete

What is printed at the very top of your DSE vouchers, check your woolies then compare please, maybe "woolworths" or is it optus?

    • +1

@Luke - yes they were 14.05 with everyday rewards
@Grog - Under the DSE logo etc there is a box with the details.

      Woolworths Mobile Recharge
      Voucher number XXXXXXX159

      Amount Serial Number
      $29.00 123XXXXX78

      Using your Woolworths mobile Voucher

Rest same as Woolworths bought voucher

      Except Says

"You can recharge either $29 or $49…… 5Gb of data"

      Visit website etc

NO REFUND FOR CHANGE OF MIND

The Woolies voucher has no box around it and right of Voucher number and above serial number is the expiry date. The DSE receipt is blank in the same spot. And nowhere else does it give an expiry date. Nothing on back of Receipt either.

Under box is a Woolworths Mobile Logo

  • I've got a collection of 7 sim starter kits.. what can I do with em? I'm about to get more of these but it just seems a waste..?! not the deal.. just the fact you have to get the sim kit..

    • it's been suggested that you can return the sims to woolworths for a $2 refund.
not sure how successful this will be but some on other forums have reported doing it.
The $12.60 deal becomes even better at $10.60!

      • +1

Link to other reports/forums would be nice

  • $14.05 for a voucher with no expiry date is excellent value.

    Thank you for the info.

    cheers

  • Spoken to the guy in woolies and they say the card cannot be reuse if they have written your detail as some poor under pay person will key that into the system and register with the government. So dont even give it to people or sell it, just shreed it in case people use it and break the law, the police will be on to u. No problem if they dont take your ID.

As for the DSE voucher, there is an expire date. The Manager in north sydney said he was specifically ask by a customer yesterday and they were looking at the voucher. Not sure which position but there is sure an expire date.

    • +1

Nice if you can find out from the DSE manager, where, b'd if I can find it on mine. If its there I might need a deal on new specs

      • No need. offer expired on midnight 1/032012. Just got the cashier scanned and confirmed.
