  • Been looking to get a MacBook for my daughter.
This looks like a good deal, but is 8GB really adequate?
Or should I pay a bit more for the MBP Pro with 16GB ram?

    • +6

If this is for school then it's more than enough. Check out https://youtu.be/_i_XWx05FTw where he edit videos on the air. The M1 chip is a different breed of chip compared to windows based laptops.

    • The Apple m1 chip is far more efficient than an intel system. 8gb of ram will get you far enough in most cases. I got a base model for 1350 on Amazon and it’s amazingly fast. It’s the best value per performance option and it will hold value for when you will upgrade in a few months / years time

This is just my personal experience so take it with a grain of salt:

I love my 8GB RAM/ 8-core GPU M1 MacBook Air and honestly would switch to using it exclusively, if it weren’t for 2 things that I do somewhat regularly - PC gaming and video encoding via Handbrake.

Otherwise, my M1 Air has handled most everything I have thrown at it including Unity 3D development, Blender 3D modelling (not Cycles rendering - can’t quite handle that), and Photoshop work.

Simultaneously. Absolutely nuts. I sold an 2017 i5 MacBook Pro to get the M1 Air and its a night and day difference.

In addition to web browsing, Spotify running in the background, a bunch of ‘helper’ apps that I use, Adobe Creative Cloud running in the background (notoriously a resource hog).

And it barely even gets warm. Never had it feel hot despite not having a fan - even when it (presumably) thermal throttles it doesn’t impact my performance.

While WFH I’ve even switched to using my M1 Air for 90% of my day job which mainly involves Office 365 work via Microsoft Edge and Microsoft Teams. This is a total breeze in comparison and everything feels very fast and responsive. I only need to switch to my Windows work laptop for VPN-related tasks, and in comparison it feels dog slow.

Oh and one more positive (for me, at least) - the M1 Air does not feature the Touch Bar on the keyboard. You get actual keys for your ESC, F1-F12 keys, instead of a thin screen.

For the negatives: I have had some software incompatibility, but I doubt anything your daughter would encounter as a student (my issues are mainly with installing Homebrew packages via the Terminal - even then, easy enough to work around).

And the whole time I’ve had it (6-7 months), I’ve had 3-4 system crashes. And these were mostly early days, seems to have been fixed with updates.

The battery also seems great but I can’t really speak to it, I keep it docked most of the time to work on an external display. However the times I’ve used it on battery, it has lasted the entire time I used it (5+ hours) and didn’t get below 25%.

I’d honestly say at this price point there is really no competition.

      • Just adding a +1 to the above experience, very happy with my M1

    • 8GB RAM on an M1 series Mac can handle everything except heavy photo/video editing and software development where you're doing intensive tasks like compiling apps or running large virtual machines — for that you'll be better off with 16GB. For everyday computing, the M1 with 8GB of RAM will be lightning fast and more than adequate.

Don't buy the old Intel-based MacBook Pros, they're ancient and inefficient compared to the M1 series. There are new M1X MBPs coming later this year, but they will be more expensive than the currently available M1 Macs.

wow, you people don't know apple will be announcing macbook pro redesign real soon (as in next month or so)? not sure if that would drive the price on air models down tho..

    • +3

Its going to be for the high end Intel based macbooks, won't affect the price of the air or the two m1 pros.

      • I doubt they will have intel tiger lake CPUs and I suppose a Radeon GPU. The expectation is it will be an Apple M series SOC variant that I presume will leave intel high end laptops, and indeed these nippy little M1 entry level machines in the dust.

After this wait if it is the same chip I would laugh and laugh.

    • +1

This is the MacBook Air m1 not the pro. The new pros are for a totally different market. I would agree with you if you were talking about buying an m1 pro now but the air is different the new air with m2 won’t be out until 2022

    • will it work if i choose pickup? will they ask for proof of union membership or something like this?

      • +1

        Yeah, you'll be fine.

  • If your M1 needs a repair, the entire thing gets wiped. No matter what's being replaced.

  • Officeworks has dropped the price to $1347

  • From a design perspective, what would be the reasons for getting the Pro over the Air? For just general web browsing, watching movies and studying.

    • +1

Screen is slightly better, battery is better, trackpad is bigger, performs better under sustained load.

Air makes more sense for most people.

  • Thanks, OP. Picked one of these up tonight. Finally got use of the Ultimate Home Gift Cards. Was able to use 12 $100 denominations at JB without issue. I rang to confirm prior.

    • Did you buy in store or can those gift cards to be used online?

      • I bought instore but called them prior to confirm they would accept ten gift cards. The lady on the phone confirmed I could use as many as I wanted, JB or Ultimate, and put my MacBook behind the counter for pickup.

  • Thanks OP, my 2014 MBP died a couple months ago and this was a perfect opportunity for me to solve that issue and use my $500 giftcard from the Telstra plan last year. Having my Air shipped cause no stock in SA though…
