  • Price seem bang even, lowest in last 12 months seems to be around $80, so I guess not too much higher.

Ouch….. Why so much more expensive than the other lodge pans…. Pizza on a bbq with smoke I get but surely there is a cheaper option….

Pizza Stone can probably be had for 10 bucks, but they are also a bit less versatile and no guarantees they will last. I had 2 initially and one broke (thermal shock but not from doing anything wrong) and have bought a replacement

There is cheaper option. I got the Lodge to match our collection. Also the good reviews. I am no expert on cast iron but most people on reddit recommended Lodge.

Here is a cheaper option with 4.5 stars feedback.

Pyrolux cast iron pizza Pan about $35 Inc postage on eBay when I bought mine …..

  • Anyone actually cooked pizza on one of these? Do you preheat and then put the pizza on it? Or you make the pizza on it and put it in?

    • I made a pizza using a lodge cast iron skillet. Followed Americas Test Kitchen video for the basic idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuzRPgPASJ8

Putting on heat for around 4 mins to get the base crispy, before putting into oven to bake.

Have a look at Adam Ragusa if you like you pizza at home

He shows you ways to make at home pizza with a few extra tips and tricks. He also teaches you how to make pizza with a iron skillet and goes into detail

      • ye I do similar to that; with cast iron pizza I cook the base on the stovetop while I put the ingredients in and then I put into the broiler. Differences are that I put semolina on the pan instead of oil, healthier and gives a good texture imo. Also I like the broiler more than the oven (assuming you have a thin pizza, if you have a thick pizza/lots of toppings/easily burnable toppings, then use normal fan mode) as it gives a more charry result

        • Is that the stuff on english muffins?

          • @ATangk: yep, it can be, sometimes its cornmeal or any other coarse flour

I bought 2 back in June and have used it few time. It is better Preheated then make pizza on it. Also we take the cooked pizza off and put the pizza dough straight on then put toppings on.

If you want the dough bottom in the middle of the pan to be a bit more crusty. Heat it on the stove for couple of mins (we set the stove top to low/medium for 3 mins) then into the oven @200 deg C.

Ed: I just bought 2 more.

Ed2: this is the pizza dough recipe we used.

      • U going to open a shop? 4x 150 dollar pizza pans lol

        • Dont think even gourmet pizza shops use this :D

          • @bnh: Pizza stones work fine and theyre like $20?

We bought this one https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B016ILHNS6/ref=ox_sc_sa… and we've been very happy with it.

  • What thickness pizza bases are you making with this? Thin or thick?

  • If anyone is interested in knowing the benefit of metal versus pizza stones

They did direct comparisons and this guy loves his pizza.

Actually, his channel is great for at home pizza makers

  • I bought this a few weeks ago for $65.90: https://www.amazon.com.au/Lodge-L12SK3-Skillet-Helper-Handle…

I would be inclined to use it for pizza making instead of something like the one posted here.
It's a lot more versatile in the kitchen, can still make regular pizza but with a nice browned crust - plus you can make a mean Chicago-Style deep dish pizza!

  • I use the 10.5" Lodge skillet from the 5-piece set, the skillet is great buying currently at $42.68 delivered by Amazon AU:
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Lodge-L9OG3-Round-Griddle-Black/dp…

I find that a perfect size for soft long-proofed doughs. 14" may be a struggle. I got the set for ~$140 locally from Costco, but it's been cheaper than that.

If it is just for pizza, there is an Australian-Made pizza steel at around the same price.

The 6mm thick versions look like around the same thickness and price as the Lodge, although there is also a 10mm thick version for more money.

  • If cooking pizza in an oven, put it straight on the oven racks. You'll get a more even cook and crispy bottom… you don't need a tray.
