    Genuine question:
Are "covid requirements" filters available for these types of mask?
I've only been using the blue masks from the chemist until now but looking for something longer lasting / washable as they're saying we might be wearing these until Christmas now. (Qld)

  • +20

the filters don't really work as these don't seal against your face. the masks are to protect others from your droplets. you'd need like those hazmat masks if you want actual protection for yourself.

    • +2

Exactly, the inhaled air will always take the path of least resistance, which will primarily be around the PM2.5 filter, not through it.

      • -4

the inhaled air will always take the path of least resistance

        So will exhaled air

        • +8

They capture a lot of the aerosol droplets though.

          • -3

            @9839002: I didn't say that they didn't.

          • -1

@9839002: Correctly rated masks fitted correctly may do, completely unrated and untested pieces of overpriced cloth like this? Not so much.

        • +26

          So will exhaled air

Why would you comment something with such conviction when you clearly don't have any basic understanding of fluid dynamics.

When you wear a mask, air that you exhale will hit the mask and change direction, drastically reducing the velocity of the air, and hence, how far droplets will travel.

          • @p1 ama: Unless you inhale downwind and exhale upwind

          • +3

@p1 ama: actually, you've said exactly what he's said…. if air is hitting the mask and shifting direction, that's the path of least resistance. Air going through the mask is the path of higher resistance.

            So spaceflight isn't technically wrong.

          • +3

            @p1 ama:

Why would you comment something with such conviction when you clearly don't have any basic understanding of fluid dynamics.

Why would you make such an idiotic comment with so much conviction that demonstrates you have no idea about fluid dynamics?

It doesn't even have anything to do with fluid dynamics.
In very simple terms 2 electrical pathways in the same circuit will both see a flow of electricity. However the part of the circuit with lower resistance will have more electricity flow through it compared to the part with higher resistance

When you wear a mask, air that you exhale will hit the mask and change direction

That's because it hits the mask, which has high resistance, and changes direction to travel out the gaps of the mask where there is less resistance.
Why do you think glasses fog up when worn with a medical mask? Because the air passes though the gap between the mask and your face as it's lower resistance then air passing through the mask.

Air takes the path of least resistance, you can't change that no matter how stupid you are.

Why do you think rivers flow the way they do?
Rocks in the way, that's hard so the water flows along the soil.
A hill, that's a lot of resistance to go up so the water flows around it.

Why do you think some N95 masks have a 1 way valve? Because breathing and exhaling through them is difficult.
The 1 way valve provides a path of lower resistance to make exhaling easier (which is why you should never use them for medical purposes because it provides a 'jet' of your exhaled air)

            • -3

@spaceflight: LMAO, so all the laws of nature revolve around how electricity works? Guess I didn't need my B-Sci degree at all….

                @adanbro:

LMAO, so all the laws of nature revolve around how electricity works?

                I never said that

                Guess I didn't need my B-Sci degree at all….

Sounds like you wasted your money if you can't understand something so simple.

Everything takes the path of least resistance: water, electricity, air, everything.

Wolves probably evolved into domesticated dogs because it was easier to scavenge on human trash than track down prey.

You're taking the path of least resistance because you can't be bothered learning something new as it's easier to hold onto your old incorrect belief.

              • @adanbro:

all the laws of nature revolve around how electricity works

Electricity doesn't always follow the path of least resistance

                • @idonotknowwhy: Wow, from that, you seriously took that electricity doesn't follow the path of least resistance? Some current will flow through the "more difficult" path, more will flow through the "least difficult" path. Look up ohms law, you can see exactly how much will flow through each depending on resistance.

What spaceflight has said is 100% in conjunction with the CDC, and all other tests about masks. Poor fitting masks are ineffective, as everything just goes out the sides, eg "the path of least resistance". The tighter the fit, the more "resistance" there is to the air going around the edges, the more effective the mask.

Those telling him he is incorrect are, ironically, "ignoring the science", and going against every study on mask efficacy.

                    @brendanm:

you seriously took that electricity doesn't follow the path of least resistance

No, I took that Electricity doesn't always follow the path of least resistance

I have no comment about the masks or airflow, don't really understand it, I just wear mine when the government says I should.

                    • @idonotknowwhy:

No, I took that Electricity doesn't always follow the path of least resistance

It does though, as proven by ohms law. More of it will go where resistance is lower. Same as with water, air, everything. Heck, bubbles are spheres because they have the lowest surface area.

I just wear mine when the government says I should.

                      Lol.

      • Yep and thats why I dont use insertable filters anymore. Its pointless.

    • +9

I think it’s important we start realising that protecting others is not less important than protecting yourself. Soon, once restrictions ease and vaccination rates are up, many of us will catch it without realising. Wearing a face mask like this when you sit on a bus or go to the shops will then be a great benefit to others, if you happen to carry the virus without knowing you have it.

    • +1

The filters give more form, stopping unnecessary mask flapping
Wow conversations we have in 2021, who would'a thought . Guess it's better than Skynet going live…

    • +2

This is a link to an "accurate meme that is accurate". So accurate that medical organisations use it to cut through all the noise of the mask debate.

      https://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/gaj2a3/wear_your_mas…

      • -1

Except a solid stream of fluid isn't the same as tiny droplets carrying virus particles. One hits the fabric and runs down, the other goes through the space between the fibres. That's why they have ratings for masks, and why they don't use cloth masks for surgery, or working in hazardous environments.

        • I am an engineer who used to work with carcinogenic dusts (asbestos being just one of several), and confined spaces. I fully understand particle ratings of masks and filters.

Whatever you do individually with your own mask can assist and the better the mask, the more protection you get, but you can still catch Covid through droplets on your eyes or your own mask's leaks due to poor fit or bypass. In public, you are heavily reliant on others proper selection and use of their masks, more so than your own mask. There are no government mandated Covid mask standards, and unlikely to be either. Hospital Covid settings and PPE are a different beast again which I won't cover). However, even a poor mask significantly reduces (And yes, does not eliminate the risk) of both droplets and aerosols. And if you are a male, if you didn't shave today, your N95 mask won't seal on your face. So both yours and others behaviours in public have as big an impact over and above masks.

So the "Swiss cheese model" meme, that has also done the rounds, equally applies too: https://www.reddit.com/r/Coronavirus/comments/jaa89w/the_swi…

It is the suite of preventative actions and testing that stops infection and spread, and not just masks alone that are important.

    $80 normal price is trolling

    • +13

but but but …. it's stripey!

      • +4

Saying that it probably a decent investment given the lockdowns if they are comfy

    • +1

      Agreed.. $80 is quite steep

Looks like they are going for the “designer” look

I wouldn’t pay $40 for three masks, even if Calvin Klein made them

      • +3

I mean PS got better quality for their price than Klein.

Klein it's generally super over priced stuff with not great quality

  • Wahhh won’t let me add to cart. Great find though. Sad I can’t purchase as Paul Smith is from my home town 😢

    • +1

I just tried again, working ok for me..

      • Yep working now and I had 12 in my basket lol 😂 Thanks for the post. 🤩

    • You from London?

    • They don't sell them there.. looks like some cheap Chinese website.

      • Looks like theyre is spamming a number of ozbargain posts.

  • +2

    Made in Italy!

    • +11

Must be unreliable and expensive to service then!

  • +24

Me in 2026: I should really get rid of these facemasks now. But they’re Italian made Paul Smith’s…

  • +10

Went for a look at the mask, ended up buying a shirt and jeans instead. Doh

    • +2

I’m a huge fan of Paul Smith, this is really tempting shame they just don’t have the signature stipe for sale on its own

      • +3

Big fan here too. I'm still wearing PS shoes that I bought about 15 years ago.

      • +1

i've been avoiding their sales lately…the last time i dared venture in, i spent $300 on a pair of brogues i didn't even need.

        • Funnily enough I don’t like their shoes. It’s the t shirts and jumpers I like. Their slim fit clothing fits me perfectly.

          • +1

@Gunnar: Their shoes used to be awesome but I agree I haven't bought a pair of shoes from them in almost 10 years as I haven't seen one I've liked for a long time

  • Who's Paul?

    • +1

Brother of the great Australian cricket cheat

    • that's Sir Paul to you ;)

    • I went to school with a Paul Smith. Bankstown Secondary. Is this the same guy all yous are talkin about? He used to love welding and throwing gum at the back of the head of the teacher. Who woulda guessed he’d become a fashion mogul.

  • -3

This mask is useless for covid prevention, should always use one time medical mask.

    • +2

The description never mentioned covid protection, I assumed it was just a fashion accessory.

      • When the world get hit so hard by covid, wearing mask became fashion.

    • +2

Always? So any time you go to a shop you put on a one-time mask to then bin it directly afterwards?

      • Yes,put in the bin before enter your home.

        • +3

I only do this when I’m doing a big weekly grocery run. For anything in between, I’m using one of my cloth facemask which I put in the wash at the end of the day. I think you need to find a balance between your environmental impact and your Covid risk assessment.

          • @bozbargain: You do laundry once a day? How many people in your household?

            • +1

@Lucille Bluth: 4 people and yes I do laundry (almost) every day. What I meant though is that I put my cloth facemask in the laundry basket at the end of the day. Therefore, I have several of them.

              • @bozbargain: Darn that would be a hell of a lot of work for you. I just shove everything in to my machines limits, never seperate colours and maybe do laundry once a week, but only 2 people.

I think half the time my washing machine is barely spinning lol

                • +3

@Lucille Bluth: Everything changes with kids! A load with just bedsheets and pillow cases, one for towels, a dark load, sportswear, school uniforms, a sensitive 30c wash - that’s 6 already not even counting 56 socks and all the underwear and t-shirts.

    • These are definitely better than nothing and if washed regularly, quite effective.

  • +2

I’m good with $9.95 for 50 disposable at chemist warehouse

    • +6

come on… these are at least 160 times better.

      • -1

these are not for covid protection

    • +4

I'm sure the planet is too.

    • Oh so you're the guy littering the streets?

  • I'm not a fan of the "one size" thing, which for me usually means it will be too small.

    • These look like they're adjustable.

      • +1

It’s the size of the cloth part, which is not adjustable.

  • Hopefully these will last longer than their wallets

    • +1

Had my PS wallet about 8 years now, still going strong

      • +1

You must be very careful with how you treat your wallets. I find the edges all start to peel and crack and the stitching frays. My friend said he had the same problems with his too. Had 1 with the signature pattern, 1 with bike and 1 with the car. All bought from DJs. Had to throw each out after about 3 years of usage each. Now switched to Bally and Bottega and I think the leather quality is so much better. After about 5 years of use they still look new.

  • Thanks, bought 2.

  • +2

People, please only buy those certified masks if you want the mask to provide you with protection from COVID.
Certifications provide protection from COVID: P2 - Australia standard, N95 - the US standard, KN95 - Chinese standard
The majority of the masks you have found in the supermarket or online don't provide sufficient COVID protection.

  • +1

    Fashionable face cloth.

  • Wear a clinical mask. These fabric masks won’t protect you no matter how many layers they have.

    • +2

The cotton on fabric masks are N90 rated. You can get some very effective ones and while they don't meet the N95 standard, they're very useful for lower risk settings

  • Go down the page there is matching underwear as well :o)

  • +2

Why so expensive? Better protection? Better fabric? Better breathability? Or just paying for the logo.

    Anyway, bought.

    • +1

Designer Label prices, was keen on a shirt but not at $300 which they want for it.

  • lol $80 then "on sale"

  • or you can get Surgical Face Masks - Level 3 - Box of 50 for $12 elsewhere

  • +8

Or you could buy Australian made masks of likely better quality to support locals, and decrease your carbon footprint while also probably spending less?

  • would be nice if these don't fog up glasses? It's the one thing I hate about these masks.

    • +1

cambridge mask has a foam strip for the nose part. there's a melb seller with 40% off atm. I wear glasses and the foam bit makes the fogging minimal and seals around the entire mouth/nose area

    • +3

Try a piece of folded tissue inside the top of the mask. 1min https://youtu.be/7Rpna0mNXHE

  • anyone purchase this? and how many of you purchase this.. really curious to find out $32 for 3 masks

  • +2

the rainbow mask from the front looks like you're wearing a vag on your face

    • Flirting on hard mode.

  • -2

Ah yes. Italy. I can see why we want COVID PPE from there, excellent track record.

  • Like buying gold paint for your hand cuffs and feeling good about it.

  • +1

No one would care the brand of masks and just making them rich wasting $32 when you can buy 50 pack of proper surgical or KN95 for aprx $35

  • -4

    asphyxiate yourself in style.

  • +1

Who is Paul Smith from Italy ? I might buy if it's Paolo Smitso.

  • absolutely nothing special about these mask, you are only buying for the name.
just wait until next week, it will be Chinese fakes you can get 90% cheaper, lol.
what i really want is the nike usa olympic mask, i will pay extra for that one.
