Product details

Raymond Davidson of Glencairn Crystal took it upon himself to design a glass specifically for the whisky drinker. He invented a unique inward-curved shape glass, allowing the focus of the whisky aromas, encouraging a user to appreciate the 'nose' of the whisky as well as the palate. Today, whilst there are a number of different styles of such glasses available, Glencairn is the first style to be endorsed by the Scotch Whisky Association and it is used by every Whisky company in Scotland and Ireland. A simple innovation that is now the preferred tasting glass for connoisseurs the world over.

These glasses are really great, I have 2, just bought another 2, thanks OP

    • Agreed. They are holding up quite well.

  • What is the difference between a cheap glass from say kmart to one of these? Does a glass really mater on the taste of what is inside? Sorry I am newbie here with whisky/scotch drinking.

    • This sentence is way more pretentious than I ever thought I'd write but: if you like scotch and know how to appreciate it properly, these glasses have been uniquely crafted to enhance the experience.

Edit: sorry, I just realised that doesn't give you much, so I'll add - I particularly enjoy the way the shape focuses the smell at the point of tasting. 'Smell' wasn't something I'd ever really noticed prior to using these glasses, but I now think it adds more to the taste.

      • Thanks for this, it made me look more into it. I'll have to go through the type of glasses that I have at home but these get some good reviews to maybe make it worth my time as I have been enjoying drinking scotch lately and if this really enhances the experience, I will have to go for it.

    • It’s the shape, rather than the material. In theory, these glasses allow the harsh ethanol vapours to be released and retain/focus the aromas.

    • like beer and wine drinking, the shape of the glass is quite critical in directing the aromas coming off the drink, and in effect the way it tastes.

a pair of these is well worth it, even for the cheapest of single malts.

    • As has been mentioned, the shape is the key. Having said that, there are more expensive glasses that have generally the same shape but these do not make your whisk(e)y taste any better. It doesn't matter if it's soda glass or crystal, comes in fancy box, or has some decoration engraved on it, the drink will still taste the same.

      • I have one of these and they're fantastic.

  • Can buy 2 for 12$ via afterpay Danmyrphy Ebay

    • link please?

  • In addition to whiskey, I am also using these for drinking wine. Really prefer these as these are less tippy given the lower centre of mass and heavy base. Very important when I am drunk.

  • +1

IMHO far too small and too expensive for what they are. Stemless wine glass is a much better option.
edit: and yes I have them, but after trialing them for a while settled on the stemless wine glass as being much more enjoyable. I only drink single malts and no ice, YMMV.

    • Picturing someone drinking wine-amounts of whisky from a wine glass.

    • Agreed. I have some. Don't particularly like them. Big fat heavy base that is too narrow to comfortably hold.

My go-to whisky glass is a reidel O stemless wine glass. Don't know which variety of wine they think it's for, but it's quite a small glass and perfect for two fingers of whisky (and a dash of water).

  • I have these glasses and love them

    swishing intensifies

However, they are on the smaller side so keep that in mind for all you heathens that add ice to your whisky.

    • A little water (from the melting ice) releases the guaiacol to the air liquid interface allowing one to inhale it.

      • +2

Ice cools whisky too much, hiding / masking the taste.

  • I got one for free with a bottle of hakushu last night.

Can’t remember if the minimum spend was $100 or $120.
