Get ready use the pin authentication for banking and other apps, I don't think many banks and apps support pixel face id

    • Does this have fingerprint id?

      • +1

        Nope.

        • Can anyone confirm this? My Pixel 3 has fingerprint ID for almost all of my apps.

          • +13

            @youfnc: The Pixel 4 doesn't have a fingerprint reader.

            • @eecan: Thanks! I just realised I was still googling Pixel 3 fingerprint scanner, lol.

          • +5

@youfnc: Yes. I have a Pixel 4 and only BeemIt and UBank (from Westpac and Citibank plus the aforementioned) do FaceID.

            • +4

@kerfuffle: Nab and Commbank do FaceID for me too

              • @shapers: Thanks for confirming! I don't bank with either so I didn't mention them

              • @shapers: On pixel 4?

                • +3

@hopper: P4XL here, CommBank and NAB do FaceID

            • +2

@kerfuffle: FaceID with Macquarie as well

              • +1

@Tafe: I have a 4xl and FaceID is available with Amex, Westpac, NAB, bitwarden, lastpass, Aussiebroadband app, Spriggy banking, Sniip… In the early days there was limited support but I'm finding support for it in most apps I seen to use. I actually had to switch back to my pixel 3 for a about a week and found I had become so accustomed to FaceID that I was infuriated with having to use my fingerprint. That being said I'd prefer FaceID and fingerprint combo.

                • @jhaley3180:

                  Westpac,

Since when does Westpac have FaceID login on Android? I have the Pixel 4 and still have to use that 4-digit code to log in.

    • Yup I had the Pixel 4 for almost a year (until I accidentally broke it) and face unlock was only enabled on a handful of apps which made it quite cumbersome to use. Really missed the fingerprint reader there, got the Pixel 5 now and much prefer the wider combability.

      • Google made a blunder by making it acceptable to scan face even with closed eyes. And that's the end of the story

        • +1

The closed eye issue was fixed after a couple of months following release. Yep it was a security blunder but it's gone

      • Compatibility* I have no idea how I made that typo and too late to edit.

        • +4

And I thought a combab was a new food being offered at CommBank.

        • +1

          Covfefe?

        • Combability = combine + ability

You speak my language. Makes perfect sense to me!

      • +3

I have 4 XL and conversely find few apps that I use that require the PIN.

      • +3

I'm still rocking a Pixel 4 and can attest that the lack of fingerprint reader is a real PITA. Need to PIN unlock for frequent checking in with Service NSW, and most other apps. Face unlock useless during these mask-wearing times. Face unlock also too effective when I just want to glance at notifications, not unlock the thing. But I can change tracks by waving at my phone.. whoopee. Some dubious design decisions from Google.

Would have gone for a Pixel 5 if only they had kept the 2x optical zoom, which I find very useful for my photography. Hanging out for a Pixel 6 but a bit dismayed to hear that only the larger "Pro" model gets the 3 lenses.

    • +3

For my uses, face id works on Commbank and Amex
Does not work on St George Bank, Commsec, or Service NSW
So now i'm using a mix of face id and pin

I do miss Pixel 3's fingerprint ID. felt a lot more like an "integrated experience"
      plus… DAMN FACE MASK FFFF

    • -1

FaceID should work on every single current app that supports biometrics… Works on Service NSW for me.
Facemasks are a huge problem though and a major pain for FaceID.

      • Works on Service NSW for me.

On Android? If so, what phone?

      • i thikn everyone (above) is referring to google pixel's face unlock feature (though i've even ncorrectly called it faceid)

works on service nsw for me

do you mean service nsw with faceid works on your apple device? or google pixel?

      • Sorry, I'm not logging into the Service NSW app, just using it for check-ins, so I guess that's irrelevant.

  • +3

    Pixel 4, 4a, 4a 5G

    I am so confused.

    • no xl ?

    • +1

      not that confusing?
      a-version is smaller
      a-version with 5G has 5G

    • +5

The next model is reportedly called 6A 6G XL PREMIUM PRO PLUS MAX TURBO BOOST.

    • Yes

  • +2

Might be worth a buy to try out https://calyxos.org/

    • I've been keeping an eye out for a pixel deal to try out grapheneos… tempted by this deal, although it's probably not the greatest price given it's now 2 generations old

      • I’m doing this now. Bought a refurbed 3 to test.

    • +1

Is it possible to use banking apps with calyxos, considering they need to be downloaded from the play store?

      • +1

You can download most of them from the aurora store, a google play alternative

  • This or iPhone XR?

    • +9

      As a long-time Pixel 4 XL owner… the XR.

      • +1

        Hah, how come?

XL has the bigger battery too!

        • It runs out very quickly though 🥲
iOS seems to get away with it with its crazy optimisation. I love the camera on the 4 XL but Google really missed the mark with the 4, might be worth at looking at one of the newer Pixels, it'll be worth it

    • +1

I have the Pixel 3 XL. Get the XR. The Pixel 4 is the black sheep of the Pixel family.

Optimised and overall a good experience. You'll get tons of software updates as well. You could wait for the 5a or the 6a in the future but that's up to you.

I do love the S21 tho

    • Can't comment on XR but my pixel 4 had been my favourite phone yet.

Buttery smooth since day one. Had since launch, so almost 2 years. i don't think it's ever needed a restart from crashing. Camera is amazing.

As expected battery isn't amazing but if youre not a power user, don't worry.

Overall extremely solid phone and have been very impressed.

  • I think pixel 4

  • POCO F3 8/256GB is similar price with next gen spec

    • Nice phone, but no effective warranty, and doesn't go 4G calls (aka VoLTE) on Telstra

  • wondering if getting this Google purebred phone would make Google assistant work on Android wear…
probably thinking Android wear is a lost cause.

  • -1

Good value 3 pack of burner phones

  • +1

Happy with 4XL here - Amex works fine with face id.
Does the best job of Android - better than OnePlus.

    • Forgot Amex also has FaceID (I have mine turned off as I have two Amex accounts)

  • been running with pixel 4 for a year (or two) whenever it was released.

basically the week after i got it, i turned off high refresh screen, radar and whatever "new stuff" because the battery life is so pathetic.
Also finding the bluetooth has some wierd bugs that some of devices dont connect

Found face id fine, but still think pixel 1 fingerprint was faster.

anyway google lost their way with pixel 4,5.. hopefully they find it back at 6.

  • Edit: Ok, I'm thick. Bunch of links didn't have "Refurbished" and "Ex Demo" in their titles, ignore me.

I think I saw this for $397 few weeks back may be at Officeworks website. Now can't find that listing.

    • +1

Yep, limited stock that couldn't buy online - coincided with lockdown (Vic) though

  • +1

Ugh, wish I'd picked up the 4a 5g last month when everyone was clearing them out. Now they're back to $800 everywhere.

  • +2

No guaranteed security updates after Oct-22…. which is in 1 yr and 3 months.
