What Do You Put in Your Cheese Toasties/Grilled Cheeses?

Just was wondering what to have for lunch, and a cheese toastie came to mind. What ingredients do you normally add to your cheese toasties (if any)?

For me, Spam works wonderfully well in a cheese toastie. Salami slices are good too.

just had cheese, red onion and ham
    .

    • Do you fry the onion then put it in or do you eat it raw? I guess both ways would be pretty good.

raw, I prefer raw most of the time i.e. hamburgers etc
they are soft by the time it's ready to eat though
        .

    • preheat airfryer at 180
    • butter one side of two slices of bread
    • add sliced tomato, crumbled feta, baby spinach, aioli and a dusting of cayenne pepper
    • sprinkle mixed herbs on the buttered tops
    • 7 minutes in the airfryer

Toasties stays thick and crunchy and tastes awesome.

A big bowl of french vanilla icecream afterwards and you're ready to take on the rest of the day.

Occasionally I skip the toastie and go straight for the icecream.

Do you still get a nice, browned, crispy bread surface even when using an air fryer? I've always stuck with a non-stick pan and it comes out crispy.

      • Lightly browned and super crispy.

        • +1

I just tried it but the bottom side of bread didn't get very brown and crunchy. Good tip though, cleaner than using the griller

          • @[Deactivated]: Legit basket airfryer or one of those cheap small oven pretend airfryers?

            • @MS Paint: I used a cheap $45 3.5 litre Mistral airfryer. Maybe it's not powerful enough? Actually I only left it in for 4-5 minutes, and that was 2 sandwiches - next time I'll try it for longer

“Rest of the day”. Is this breakfast?

    • sounds dry? ngl

      • Aioli and tomato takes care of that

        • ah, i was thinking the outer crusts would dry out/become hard..?

at least that was my experience when i had some garlic bread in the oven, which i thought may be similar to airfryer results with sliced bread

(but with jafflemaker / sandwich press i get good result as expected)

          • +1

@capslock janitor: I love my bread thick and crispy. I hate hard and crunchy too and also over the squished bread you get from jaffle makers.

            • @MS Paint:

I hate hard and crunchy too and also over the squished bread you get from jaffle

Lol every bite I take I'm not sure if my tooth is gonna chip or it's the hard sharp bread cutting my gums

I'm personally okay with the half-squished bread haha..

    • Yup, this is perfect before morning coffee.

Roasted a turkey breast in the Weber Monday night so this week I'm rocking Turkey, Swiss Cheese, Baby Spinach, Cranberry Sauce. In wraps though, hope that still counts.

    • +1

How does a turkey wrap relate to a cheese toastie?

    • I toast it in a sandwhich press and it has cheese in it…?

  • Cheese, Fritz, sweet mustard pickles, tomatoes, salt pepper,

    • +3

You don’t need a location in your profile if you’re putting Fritz on your toasty.

        Ahhh, they're talking about polony.

Peanut butter. Yes it sounds crazy, yes it sounds gross, but it really is an amazing flavour combination.

Can't go wrong with some smooth or crunchy Bega and tasty cheese.

I used to think you was cool.

      • +1

Have you tried it? It was a treat in the 90's during the school summer holidays.

If you wanted gross then I would have suggested blue cheese over spew cheese. Because you know at some point in history people decided…. hey let's eat this mouldy cheese and bam blue cheese is invented.

        • +1

One day I'll give it a shot. My partner is a fan of Nutella and cheese, that is a crime far worse.

        • +1

I just discovered blue cheese this week - was having a quiet night in with the girlfriend, a bottle of wine and a plate of cheese. Boy was I hooked on the first bite of blue cheese 🧀 😋

I love peanut butter. Think I'll give it a try on a toast and cheese sandwich

I used to think you was cool.

I used to think you were literate.

        • It’s intended to be read as dialogue and I’ve deliberately used informal grammar to affect a sort of silly accent, it helps make the one liner funny but some people have a hard time picking up on it.

    • +1

I love peanut butter and cheese. Haven't tried it in a toastie though

    • peanut butter & cheese is nice, ain't it

  • +4

Add some crisps, you'll have a CrispyChrispy's CrispyCheeseToastie.

    • +1

Damn, a chip-cheese toastie. Doesn't sound too bad.

  • +1

Margarine spread outside of bread, Cheese, bacon or ham, diced onion, diced tomato

    • why not inside?

      • Margarine on one of the inside pieces, I guess both inside parts work too

    Chicken snitz toastie.

Just Plain Jane . Nothing beats those Cheese Toasties we once upon a time could get at Royal Show :)

    Ham, cheese and pickled gherkin.

  • cheese, tomato, sliced gherkin

  • This is super bad for you, but if I want to indulge I make some potato gems (the crispier the better!) then pop them in with some ham. The soft potato melts together with the cheese and the crispy coating adds texture. The trick is to layer it so both the ham and gem layers have cheese between them and also the bread so it all sticks together.

  • I usually use the grated 4 cheese melt. Often just that on it's own or add triple smoked ham. If you want dessert, marshmallow and nutella is awesome but any that leaks sets like concrete so I reserve those for camping with the cast iron jaffle makers so I can burn off the remains.

Kewpie mayo on the outside of the bread instead of butter/margarine - game changer!!

    • why not inside?

      • It toasts nicely giving a bit of a crust

This still cracks me up after 7 years. It's so heart felt. The passion is real.

    • Can't blame the guy, when theres people here mentioning creamed corn, banana and ricotta weird mixes.

  • +1

    Creamed corn and cheese

    Or Banana, ricotta and honey

  • i used to love tinned curry in a toastie. :D

Otherwise it would be ham/cheese and maybe a bit onion from time to time.

^ substitute pineapple with mushrooms and/or spinach

must have 2 layers of cheese. helps it stays together too.

  • my 2 go to standards in the breville sandwich press:

    cheese
    ham
    tomato
    avocado
    cheese

    tomato
    spanish onion

  • From top to bottom:

    cheese
    black pepper and salt
    garlic aioli
    avocado
    cucumber
    tomato
    spinach
    cheese

  • When I can afford it, Sliced champagne ham, old bitey vintage cheese slices and fried tomato and fried onion. First to ensure the toast is going to be crisp I toast on low setting in conventional toaster fry tomato and onions in pan, put aside, butter bread both sides and add fillings whack in sandwich press and toast away

    fish fingers

    • With cheese? That sounds pretty good.

    • Fish fingers with Wiltshire sauce, yum

  • Grilled cheese on a slice of bread with pepper sprinkled on top

If you want a nutty affair sprinkle peanuts over the melted cheese

  • Ham Cheese and pineapple. Sometimes capsicum.

  • Italian Herbs, Chilli flakes, Garlic granules, coarsely ground black pepper and pinch of Vegeta:

Sprinkled directly onto finely sliced tomato to draw/absorb some of the excess moisture from the tomato,
which helps soften-up the dried stuff.

(Ideally also some v.finely sliced onion or spring onion/green onion. Bit of parmesan is nice but the cheddar and Vegeta already give it a good salt kick)

  • cheese, tomato, black pepper and salt

  • ham, salami, mustard pickles, plastic cheese, tomato.

  • Gruyere Edam Cheddar and Red Leicester dash of Veggie Worcestershire Sauce and some cracked pepper

Or Just get one of those Aldi Cidre Fondue pots and spread it out over a few Toasties.

  • Lamb and tuna fish.

  • Leg ham, Bega cheese slices and tomato slices (with seeds removed) and the most important ingredient is the cracked pepper on the tomato

    • why no seed, the skin gets plasticky and that bothers me more

      • I guess it's just a habit for me because I always used to do it to avoid having my packed sandwhiches get soggy

  • simply bacon/ham + cheese .. can't go wrong
ham toastie - ham me down

  • Sucuk.

  • I put kimchi in mine. Kimcheese toasties are the best

  • Kimchi is really tasty, a little bit goes a long way.
A bit of mustard also accentuates the cheese flavour

  • My go to is a good quality pickle and cheese toastie

  • +1

Extra hot sopressa salami, jalapenos, onion, cheese and a dash of Frank's hot sauce.

  • Baked beans, cheese and onion,
