can this be used as a trigger for home assistant if I have the hue bridge?
in other words I'd like to control another room but not too keen to get the hue downlights

    • +1

Works for me with Conbee II to control other non Philips lights. HA probably works with hue bridge too.

    • +4

Yes, once paired these just appear as devices that can have events which trigger anything.

    • +2

yes, you can but hue bridge causes a delay of up to 5 sec when reading state because of its bad read interval config. mija hub and buttons work almost instantly with HA.

      • This is no longer true. The Hue integration has been updated to use a different method of retrieving data. Should be near instant now.

Failing that, there's additional integrations that can increase polling time.

    • +1

      Yes you can use HA.

I have one that triggers multiple devices based on the time of day depending on which button is pushed (eg: I have a secondary action triggered by a long press of the middle dimmer buttons).

@relentlessM8 I don't get that delay. It responds pretty much instantly.

      • interesting! I looked it up when I was getting the delay and found other people also facing this community.home-assistant.io so thought its a universal thing.. did you do any custom configuration? whats your home assistant running on? thanks

        • According to that link it seems that there is no delay when using node red - which is how I set this particular automation up. That might explain it.

Otherwise, standard HA installation on a Pi4.

          • @Astronaut Joe: Ah right. makes sense.. revisiting the forum now got me here looks like the delay issue is gone or will be gone soon with HA update..

  • I have all I need of these but couldn't resist this price to have two in the bedroom - one at the door and one bedside.

  • Can this device retrofit a bank of standard dimmable LEDs (a la shelly) or do you need LEDs from the Phillips family?, eg; $55 for a 90mm downlight.

    • By default it controls philips only and needs a hue hub to work, but with homeassistant you can control other devices. read my comment above about delayed reads when using it for your purpose.

      • Actually, the Hue switch does not need a hub. It can connect directly to Hue or other Zigbee bulbs.

        • Interesting! I wasn't aware of that. thanks!

      • "- Without a Hue Bridge: If you have Philips Hue lights that aren't connected to a Bridge, hold the Dimmer switch up to the light you want to control (try to stay within about six inches of the bulb or fixture). Press and hold the "ON" button for 3 seconds until the green light starts to blink. You can now control this light using the Dimmer switch. Repeat for up to 10 bulbs. To remove a light from the Dimmer switch, repeat the same process, but hold the "OFF" button for 10 seconds."

I wondering if you're still able to have custom presets on the dimmer.

    • Can this device retrofit a bank of standard dimmable LEDs (a la shelly)

This is a TOTALLY different thing. It is a battery operated "switch" that sends a signal.
The Shelly is a mains-powered device that physically switches 240V to a dumb light.

You might want something like this to remotely control the Shelly relay.

  • It works for my Nue zigbee bulbs. However it needs the hub. I m not sure it can can be used without the hub.

    • No this device definitely needs a Zigbee based hub of some sort. I've used it with Hue and with Hubitat as other's have stated it will work with others too.

      • False. It can be paired direct to bulbs, in the same way as Ikea switches.

        https://www.imore.com/how-do-you-install-philips-hue-smart-d…

If you don't have a Hue Bridge, point the remote directly at each light you want to pair and press and hold the "on" button until the LED light turns green and is paired to the bulb (repeat for any other bulbs you have).

        • You're right. I wasn't sure if this device could be used that way. Happy to be proven wrong.

It's worth noting that when paired to the bulb though it's usage is more limited.
