DSE online only with free delivery.
But very well done in "Ozbargain Tradition" to get the $2.45 discount from OW.
Do you live next door to OW?

I think its more of a bPeen thing, you know, like ePeen for bargains.

  • Bought one of these on the last deal at it was faulty - the battery backup side was dead. I can't take it to a DSE store but have to ship it back out =(

    • Why so?

I have bought a DSE item online and returned to the store.

  • Bought the Belkin at $59 from DSE's web site. The unit is rather large and looks well built. Its UPS shutdown software isn't the prettiest I've seen (compared to APC's software), but gives comprehensive statistics and does shut down the PC when required. Works fine with Windows 7.

Overall it's a very good bargain at $49 or $59. DSE must be sitting on a lot of these units…

  • I bought it from a Harris Technology deal for $79 last year.
    Good unit for the price.
Might pick up another one now for other PCs in the home.

  • +1

I got one in the last deal. Yeah bit bulky, but does the job. Just use for my router and switch. Get approx 30mins on the battery.

  • I bought one the last deal… good unit

  • +1

with all these thundestorms its a good buffer just to cover the mains power drops out, often just long enough for the PC to crash.

  • Do they make any noise, say a high pitched squeal or hum?

    • I can't hear any noise from mine (quiet office) when the unit is online. If power goes off there's usually a buzzing sound from most UPSs.

    • +2

Happy with my two I purchased the last time, might buy another one or two… They make next to no noise when in standby mode (unlike my eaton UPS) and a very slight hum when running off battery (also unlike my EATON which makes a noticible buzzing noise when using battery power).

Replacement batteries are around $27 from Jaycar (from what I could tell based on the size and capacity) - at $50 delivered you can't complai.

Achieved about 13 minutes battery life with an idle Q6600/GT8800/4 Hard drives (drawing around 130 watts)

Overall pleased with purchase, software as some have mentioned is not esthetically pleasing but functional.

I did, when I saw this deal

How would this handle a more beefy computer setup?
    I'm thinking around 600W+, when it's rated for 300W.

    Thanks.

    • +1

The unit is rated to deliver 300w max. If you try and draw more it should instantly shut down as you're overloading it.

Bear in mind that many people have PCs with 400w+ rated power supplies, but the actual power drawn is nowhere near that amount. Well designed PCs would never place more than about 50% load on their PSU.

      • Thanks. Considering I'd need a monitor plugged into this thing also, I think my draw could definitely be hitting over the 300w limit.

        • Typical LCD monitors should consume around 45-50W when switched on so ideally your PC should draw no more than 250W of power. But I suppose you can get around that by not plugging your montior on the backup power supply.

The software supplied with my unit suggests I use a bit less than that (With an old Dual Core E6750 + single Nvidia GTX560Ti) at 38% load but somehow I doubt that's accurate.

        • Yeah, my 27" Dell draws 110W or so alone. Maybe just plug that into another little cheapie single socket surge protector.

      • I bought one of these in the last round (price matched from OW). The GUI says my PC is using around 30% load. However, the UPS shuts down immediately with the red LED illuminated and the alarm sounding continuously if the mains power is interrupted.

It seems that the indicated 30% loading is totally inaccurate and the UPS cannot handle the power requirements of my PC.

        • Yeah, I've found that too. The Belkin claims my server consumes just 20% load yet I know from testing with an accurate watt meter that it uses 100w. That should be 33%, not 20. Maybe the Belkin doesn't take power factor into account? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_factor

        • ok stupid question - There are 3 plugs with battery back up and 3 with just surge protection, you are plugging it into the battery ones aren't you? (including the monitor - because if you don't have the monitor on the battery it will turn off right away and not show you the shut down etc)

or if you do have the monitor in on the battery - to reduce some load you could unplug it and just watch the lights.

        • Yes - the computer is plugged into one of the battery backup sockets. The monitor is plugged into one of the surge protection sockets to minimise the UPS load.

WRT power factor - if the Belkin wasn't taking power factor into account, shouldn't the % reading be high rather than low? That is, the apparent power rating of the unit is 600VA whereas the real power rating is 300W (after taking power factor into account).

Maybe they're measuring real power and dividing by 600 to calculate the percentage instead of dividing by 300?

        • There is an option in the software to program how long you want the PC to stay on.
I'm trying to remember, but I think mine was set to shutdown immediately when I first installed it.

I also had to turn off the alarm, as when our power went out in the middle of the night the high-pitched alarm woke me up.

P.S. Of course you can't program it to stay on for 2 hours! Mine goes for 5-10 minutes max.

        • the provided software is only good for:

setting up the ups to send the pc shutdown command at the wanted time.
programming the ups to shutdown up to 30min. any longer is ignored.

  • Has anyone setup a UPS with a Western Digital Sharespace NAS ? The WD Knowledge base has some limited info on compatible UPS's

    http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2559/~/what-…

I don't really want to (or know if it is possible to !) mess with the Unix based firmware on the NAS. WD tech support is pretty useless and I can't find out any information about the requirements for an auto shutdown via USB. Was thinking about configuring desktop to wake on (UPS signal) USB to run a scripted shutdown of the NAS. Has anyone tried this before ?

  • +1

Got the last one at the Clarence Street store (Sydney CBD). Took the dude like 5 minutes out the back "to confirm," but in the end I got it for $46.55.

  • OK - I have bought a couple of these for work and home, something I should have done ever since they privatised the power companies. (OK, rant over)

Now - can no one else please post any other deals on UPS surge protectors for now, because I have just bought mine and don't want to be upset by any better deals !!

  • Any decent UPS surge protectors which are rated at more than 300watts?

  • +1

I bought 2 of these with the last deal.

Don't buy these if using the software is important. I couldn't get it to work properly with Windows 7 64bit ultimate. In fact, when testing I found the software prohibited the UPS from working. That being: turn off power point and UPS did nothing. Uninstall software, turn off power point and UPS worked.

My other UPS was for my modem/router,switch and nas. Turns out my NAS doesn't support Belkin either.

I wasn't intending on using the software any way, but glad I didn't buy them for this "feature".

    • Yup, my Rady NAS Duo (RND2XXX) also doesn't like this UPS. But that's detailed in the Netgear online documentation, so I can't bitch. I'm still happy with it for the $$$.

    • S/W worked fine for me - win7-64.

  • In my experience with two of these bought to keep Plasma TVs going, they've got about 15 seconds of charge in them before the plasmas drain them. I guess you get what you pay for, and of course I do realise plasmas draw a boat load of power too. YMMV

  • +1

How does it compare to this for $15 more?

Star Power 900VA/500W UPS $65 at Umart
-edit: just realised the above is out of stock (but thoughts still welcome)

Might be a little better for those who need higher power draws.
300W is probably enough in most cases, though I do wonder what happens if the power goes out when the system is under load (ie when playing games).

    • I suppose could always daisy chain the Belkin one to this, that way still get the $100k guarantee coverage for your equipment?

      • I tried daisy chaining my other UPS's (not Belkins - see earlier post) and it didn't work - a UPS outputs a modified sine wave (which looks more like a square wave) and the electronics probably detects this and refuses to work.

Not going to try risking it with the Belkin (just in case)

  • Yeah so does it work if you use a double adaptor on the battery back up side? Obviously won't last as long but in my scenario I have the computer, the monitor, and two external (powered) hard drives.

    • I am using double adapters on mine fine. Got 1 x PC, 1 x monitor, 1 (split into 2) x stereo + headphone charger.

  • i use the 400va version for a pc, ext hdd, monitor. it lasts for 12min.
i expect this 600va version to also last for 12min

you should consider using this for surge protection and to allow pc shutdown to prevent loss of data in 3 min, anything more is really a bonus

it would be good for smaller loads like cordless phone and modem etc, i get 30min before shutdown, but the power button can be pressed for another 30min burst and so on until about 2h 30 min of total backup.
it doesn't need to be connected to the mains to do this.

belkin are supposed to be pretty good with warranty and damaged equipment warranty cover as well.

don't try daisy chaining 2 UPS's, even if it does work, then it wont be as good as buying one with a larger battery capacity.

  • Serious question… How long would one of these keep my ultra low power Fit-PC2 running for? It consumes ~11W at load and ~8W idle.

Considering buying one for my Fit-PC2 and the Watts Clever electricity monitor which both run 24/7. The Watts Clever unit probably uses 2-3W max.

    • Being tired I didn't notice the post above me, i guess that answers my question. Thanks fastdude for answering my question 27 minutes before I asked it… You really are fast :)

  • Am I missing something? I can only see it for $59 with free delivery. Has the $10 of expired already? Thinking of getting one to put my network switch and modem on so that a teeny tiny power fluctuation doesn't kick me out of online games. grrr… Maybe a 2nd one for the computer and harddrives (separate room). Was hoping to snag for under $100 though.

  • I am also seeing $59, wonder what's changed…

  • It was one of "DICKS ONE DAY QUICKY" deals for yesterday, I'd assume you're too late.

  • Did this model control/shape incoming voltage as well as protect from surges and outages?
