Overview

The Smart Oven™ Pro with Element iQ® is for the cook who desires a countertop oven that slow cooks tender casseroles, bakes the perfect pizza, toasts evenly and roasts succulent meat. The convection setting reduces cooking time by up to 30%.

Key Features

Smart Element IQ® System
There’s heat, and there’s smart heat. Element iQ transfers heat intelligently across 5 quartz elements for precise and stable heat just where and when you want it for perfect results, every time. Super fast 2400W preheat gets your meals on the table more quickly.

Convection Powered
You’re not a Pro without an inbuilt fan that circulates the hot air within your oven. Convection speeds the cooking process by raising hotter air and sinking colder, less dense air for quicker heating. But you knew that.

Slow Cook Function
Some days you want to take your time to tenderise and develop complex flavours. That’s why we have a slow cook function, designed for long cook times at low temperatures. You can slow cook for up to 10 hours before the setting automatically turns to keep warm. Your food’s ready when you say it’s ready.

10 Cooking Functions
10 cooking functions to guide you to perfection: Toast 6 slices, Crumpet, Bake, Roast, Grill, Pizza, Cookies, Reheat, Warm, Slow Cook.

Interior Oven Light
Integrated oven light automatically turns on when you open the door and at the end of the cooking cycle to help you see inside. Auto shut off and independently controlled button. Replacable componentry like your regular large oven.

Good oven except it’s plagued with fan issues. Surprised they haven’t made a new model.

    • +5

They have made a new model the BOV860 with air fryer and its amazing. Used daily no issues

      • +1

Here's a comparison BOV850 (from this deal here) vs BOV860 (the new version):

        https://www.breville.com/au/en/smart-ovens/compare-result.ht…

        • So, what I'm taking away from reading the comparison, is I'm able to make cookies in the BOV850, but not the BOV860.

          • @Haliax: I'm pretty sure you can figure something out, they even have that whole page on cookies.

          • @Haliax: The manual for the BOV850 says cookies mode is 175C for 11 minutes.

            • +3

@BurnZ: Too complicated. I'll just get one of my Subordinates to do it and claim that I made them.

      • I'd definitely vouch for BOV860 instead of this one!
The AirFry function on it is awesome (using daily).

      • Another BOV860 user confirming its greatness. Roasts and airfrying mainly. Used at least 4 nights a week since May 2020.

    • dont remember this version has fan…
unless u r referring to the smart oven air fryer version
i have been using the air fryer close to a year now.. at least once a week…
      so far so good…

      • It's a convection oven. It does have a fan. There's even an on/off button for the fan.

    • there is BOV900

      • Only in North America. Not available in AU/NZ.

  • +1

The price is good but the quality is not as good as before. Rubber seal is always with gap.

    • Do you mind elaborating on this?

I purchased one today before posting the deal, so it would be nice to know what to look out for besides the fan issues.

  • waiting for the one with the air fryer.

  • Same price at Bing Lee (12/Jul): https://www.binglee.com.au/breville-bov850bss-the-smart-oven…

Just beware, though looks similar this is not the Air Fryer model: BOV860.

    • is the airfryer model great?

kinda wish Id went the BOV860 over the HD9650/93 although the latter is far cheaper and works well just cleaning is a PITA and the front load box shape is better than the plastic egg.

      • Possibly not better than a dedicated air fryer, but personally prefer multi-function appliances over separate ones.

        • no fan issues that you are aware of?

and yes me too. a counter top convection, slow cooker, toaster, possibly even dehydrater. as soon as they combine a microwave its game over

          • @abuch47: Dehydrater is the American version and they have a combi version with a microwave. It's the BOV870 or 3 in 1 Combi prob missing slow cook

            • @DoesntEvenMatter: wow, now that would get me titillated about benchtop appliances

            • @DoesntEvenMatter: apparently we can get BMO870 combi 3 in 1 here…

              …RRP $750 xD

              • @abuch47: Yes. I worded that sentence wrong. It was meant to say only the US get the dehydrater and that we do have one with a microwave, the 870. "they" meaning breville

  • Hi OP, I have an old BOV845, I have issues with the fans, its very noisy, I can afford to fix it and what should I do? thank you

    • +37

Don't quote me but I'm pretty sure the OP is not a Breville Service Technician but rather some dude stuck in lockdown looking for deals on Amazon.

      • +23

        Can confirm.

        • +4

user name and dp checks out

          • @AssBargain: Just make sure the replacement is a similar physical design (quantity of blades, size and thickness), voltage, and current draw.

Looks a bit like one of these, and a lot of people get a bit more life by spraying silicone spray on the shaft- but it won't last for long.
            https://electricmotorwarehouse.com/1-85-hp-3000-rpm-ccw-3-3-…

In Au models, is probably a 240V version.

You can open it, check the specs, and then buy a new one. Close it up and when it comes, open again and replace. Ideally get the replacement part from Breville, of course.

Part is #103 on the parts diagram, but may be NLA. Check with your local distributor for help. Call Breville if you don't know one.

    • +2

Buy this one, it's cheaper than it'll ever be.

    • You should make a post in forums or call Breville.

    • I have this older model as well and have been using it for several years now. It has a known pcb problem where it plays up.. I have to press the start button about 3 to 4 times before it actually starts. Also fan is a little noisey now but still works. Recently the spring that holds the door up broke, but I opened it up and fixed it. Just waiting for it to die before replacing it with a newer model.

  • -2

Are there any with microwave ontop of all this and air fryer capabilities?

    • -1

I checked the Breville offer for you.

      No.

    • Yes the BOV870

    • No idea why this got down voted, but breville does make one - combiwave 3in1, it’s $750 though

      • No idea about that downvoting either.

edit: Isn't BOV870 more a microwave with grill (plus all the oven/air fryer marketing)? To bake, you use a trivet as opposed to oven racks. There are no such racks there. Looks like a poorer solution, I bet it only has a top heater and relies on convection - baking in such device would be major pain.

ive been using this for 11 years.. its great and hasnt missed a beat, the LCD screen numbers have seen better days but apart from that it works well.

  • +1

I have this model for a few years now and the fan is stuck and won't spin. I think it's because it gets gummed up by the grease built up and there's no easy way to clean it without taking the thing apart.

It still works great without the fan and I use this over my full size oven most of the time since it heats up much quicker and the slow cook function is great. (saves me getting a separate slow cooker)

But I would get the new model with air fryer if I was to get one now are a bit more.

  • I bought this recently and the fan wasn’t pushing air properly after a week.

As others have also mentioned - it does not air fry.

  • airfryer model mentioned a lot - any good deals on that instead?

  • would you be able to put this inside a cupboard or does it need to be out in the open.

    • It's an oven so needs air circulation around it and not in an enclosed space with no venting.

      • What about in an open cuboard? Top and sides will have about 10cm clearence with the front cuboard door open when used.

        • I wouldn't as its a cooker and i.e. Heat would still come out of the Cooker……………..heat and wood/glue etc don't mix but up to yourself. You could do it BUT……..
The Top gets very hot as does the front, the sides and rear not so much but still has vents.

  • Don't be as stupid as I…. Do not use a corrosive oven cleaner spray on it so to impress your Mrs for cleaning it.

You won't be getting any for your efforts till you buy her a new one.

    • It seems today's your lucky day.

      • Nope. She knows about the upgraded model with an air fryer. 😭

I have the Breville Combi Wave and it’s been amazing. Air fryer, oven, and microwave in one. It also has a grill function but I find it too weak.

    • I've read some bad reviews like not being able to slow cook without microwave option meaning you can't use metal when slow cooking.

  • +2

+1 for those who have mentioned the fan issues. I had mine replaced out of warranty (by a couple of months) a few years back. Customer Service was really nice to me (but I think they know the fan ball bearing is a common fault).

I am now waiting for this one to die (eventually) with the fan issue again; so I can look for something else. Mind you, it has been over 3 years without fault so far (touch wood).

Apart from the fan issue, this is a solid unit and is used almost daily in lieu of the big oven in the kitchen. I personally believe this unit is more efficient than my big oven due to its IR heating elements.

  • Downside of this model is toaster feature is crap and very uneven. Older model was much better. Perhaps just my unit and plan at some point returning it before warranty expires next year.
