210

Saw this post on Facebook, the Transit Proactive Policing Unit from the Greater Dandenong Police Service area are giving away free one-way screws. Great freebie even though they're only normally a few dollars for a pack.

DON’T GIVE CRIME A FREE RIDE!
The Transit Proactive Policing Unit will be giving away one-way number plate screws today at Dandenong Railway Station between 1 p.m. and 2.30 p.m.
Offenders often use stolen plates to avoid identification when committing serious offences such as petrol thefts, drug trafficking and burglary.
Come along to get your FREE one-way screws to fit to your number plates and help us to prevent crime in the area 🔩💪

  • Now saying "screw you" is acceptable!

  • Get screwed by the police for free!

Don't leave your car out of sight while you're collecting the screws, your plates will probably be stolen in that time.

Lol, I was thinking the same. The irony of having this at Dandy station means that while you are collecting your screws, your plates or maybe even your car will be gone when you return.

  • "they're only normally a few dollars for a pack"? Where from? Probably easier to do that than go to Dandenong

  • +3

Good to see they're targeting hotspots to begin with

  • +1

So what do you do when you actually need to remove the plates?

    • +4

      Get a new car.

      • Go to the Dandenong Cop Shop…

Why would you need to remove your plates? I haven't had a need to do this even once in all the years of owning cars.

      • Personalised plates you remove to put on new car

      • not often but I could remember times when I had to like when detailing your car and changing to another plate e.g. normal plate to euro style plate

        • Fair enough. I've removed them only a few times to wash the grime from behind the plate, but this isn't a "necessity".

    • Just use a pair of pliers to grip them. I had to do this myself a couple of weeks ago. Took less than a minute, so they're not much of a deterrent.

    its a trap

yep, saw the channel 7 news crew at the cafe around the corner waiting…

      • …just near the booze bus & vicroads roadworthy check setup?

  • I know in the past you could get these free from any police station. I did after my plates were stolen.

I'd recommend doing this even if you have to pay a few dollars, the hassle and cost involved to replace stolen plates sucks.

Details of the full program - including other places to get them for free (or at a cost) can be found here: https://www.police.vic.gov.au/safepl8

    • You know it's a sting right ???

      • …hope their vehicle doesnt have any defects!

        • +2

          It's in Dandenong…

      • Many of places (gold coin donation to have them fitted for you) are Men's Sheds in various rural locations … you're not taking your car to the cops.

Men's Sheds in various rural locations

          Might be undercover police.

          Not worth the risk.

          • @jv: Why do you need to avoid the police?

            What law have you broken?

            • +1

              @Rubi: crimes against comedy…frequent offender

            • @Rubi:

              What law have you broken?
