Hi Team,

At the time of posting this the Sony Store are advertising available stock of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition and DualSense Controller Bundle. $709 and you get an extra controller. Id prefer just paying the RRP of $599.. but i guess they want to move stock of the controllers..

Was tempted.. But being locked into paying top dollar for games on the play station store turned me off. Still, great to see some PS5's in stock.

Also, I know this isnt a really a "Deal" but to someone dying to get their hands on a console, it kinda is.

        Zero of my joycons drift, including my launch console ones. Switch Lite I had briefly, drifted within 2months, warranty claim, then sold it.

        DualSense launch controller drifted this month, sent it in. If you consider only active months, 3 months is right.

        All sticks can drift, luck of the draw.

      The R2 triggers can activate by themselves in some controllers. It's a common fault according to EB. Haven't had any drift yet luckily.

Sure, on release, you won't get a game cheaper via the PS Store, but if you share your games with a partner/friend/child it definitely works out cheaper, even paying day-1 prices on the PS Store. If you and your partner/friend/child are going to play the same game at the same time, paying 99.95 once via PS Store is cheaper vs 59-69.95 twice for two physical discs.

      My partner and I both have PS4s, we keep one active PS Plus subscription going, with sharing, this allows us both to play online (so we're effectively paying a most $40/year each for PS Plus (instead of $80 each). We only ever buy 1 copy of a game (digitally) and we can both play it via sharing, even online games, at the same time. The only thing you can't really share are bonuses that are single claim (like the collectors edition bonuses on Red Dead Redemption 2 for example). We both get access to the bonus PS Plus digital games, etc.

      On top of the above, we have both had our consoles stolen before - granted we are both in better places in our lives now where we have insurance, a beautiful guard dog, several cats (that make me more nervous than the dog sometimes haha) and security hardware like cameras going - but if they were to be stolen again, all we would need to do is have the consoles replaced and not have to worry about, not just the cost of the games, but also the hassle of tracking down and waiting on the delivery of the physical discs, unless magically all of the games we had are still available from JB HiFi/EB/What ever. With digital games we would just re-download them all again.

        If sony ever wises up and turns PlayStation now into gamepass or just let’s gamepass exist on PlayStation then it’ll be good to go digital.

        The games I buy are 50/50 versions but damn that console just needs Now in aus, should be same price than series s tho or a little bit more expensive

          When they do that, they'll gut the much better Playstation Plus games. I hate being forced to play a gamepass game within a short time window. PSPlus games let me actually enjoy a game at my own pace.

        Physical copies have extremely deep discounts if you wait long enough too.This is not a pro/con to either side.

        What is a pro only for physical, is the second hand market, which can be better than retail and which you can also sell your games on.

        You're also ignoring that a physical owner gets to enjoy ALL discounts and can still use the sharing feature. It is really not difficult at all to balance out the extra $149 or whatever to go the physical.

        This deal in particular is just garbage, you're $40 away from physical and the controllers have been on sale extensively.

          It's definitely not a good deal, i 100% agree there. I'm a bit confused by your 'still use the sharing feature' statement though. If you purchase a physical copy of the game, you have to have that disc in the console to play it. You can't play it with a friend using the same disc. You could let them borrow it, but then you can't play it. With digital purchases and sharing set up, you can both play that one digital purchase, at the same time, together, on two different consoles.

            @lulzenberg: Bad phrasing, I'm saying a physical console can use ALL digital features and is still physical.

            If there is a great digital deal, ok? I can get that. If I want to split the costs and share to play on launch day (I can't actually do this but some one in your position can), ok? I can do that too. I can also get all great physical deals.

            The difference is $149, you can almost certainly balance that over the life of the console with great physical deals and you will be able to enjoy releases closer to launch. R&C is already <= $70 second hand. Demon Souls has been $60 for a while. Returnal is dropping quickly etc.

            Don't forget you get to enjoy all dirt cheap physical PS4 games too or enjoy a PS4 version with a free PS5 upgrade for less, just to give up a different case.

            I just think physical has way too many additional pros for $149 over 5-8yrs.

        I'd thought disc vs digital was cut and dry but this is the first thing I've read that makes me reconsider that. I clearly know nothing at all about this share feature, and it sounds like a big deal. Thanks for sharing.

        I've always wondered how the share thing worked. Id heard about it in the early days of ps4 but never saw it in action, or knew anyone that used it. Then it popped up on my radar again last year… I did a bit of googling but gave up. Guess I was searching the wrong terminology….

        @lulzenberg Agreed, I’ve been sharing for years and it’s worked well.

        I made mine a US account and she made hers an AU account so that helps us shop the sales.

        And it turns out with PS5 games the US is way cheaper than AU even after conversion.

        I think a lot of people make Canadian accounts instead too so they get the US sales but at an exchange rate closer to our own. I’m not sure why Australia got so shafted with pricing this generation.

        Wow. I actually have a preorder at EB Games for the digital version which is coming back into stock soon.
        I wasn’t really phased by the disc v digital argument because I had the same dilemma with the Switch, and after discovering Deku Deals I never bought a physical game again.

        I understand (and am a little concerned by the fact) that this is basically legitimising Sony’s monopoly of the gaming market, and was actually thinking this before I read your link.

        But having read it, now I’ve kinda been swayed away from the Dark Side.

    Really wouldn't recommend the digital version in Australia. Physical copies are almost always cheaper than digital. You'll make up the difference between the digital and the physical after a few game purchases. Plus, currently the usable space on the SSD is like 667 GB with no option for expansion, so you'll be screwing around moving games on and off external HDDs or redownloading.

            @clandestino: I didn't downvote him but physical copies are either cheaper on release or go on a bigger discount faster which is all that matters to me.

            If you really want to be savy you can buy a physical copy of a game, beat it and then sell it for almost full price straight away

            The parts involving sharing with others or the risk of it getting physically stolen are minor or non-issues.

          I wouldn't downvote (great use case) but will comment on another counterargument here as it's the right thread.

          If I have a lukewarm interest in an offline AAA game, I wait until it hits the bargain bin at JB to play it.

          I am talking about the Assassin's Creeds or the Far Cry's of the world that always end up in the $29 bin during a sale. On the day I purchase it physically, the game would still be something stupid like $89 or $59 on the PS digital store - even two years after launch - time and time again.

            @OG Puppy Banana: Yeah the PS store prices can be amazingly shitty even with old games - these are the types of games i tend to buy when they have the big sales though, which usually bring them down to about 5-10$ from the 'regular' physical disk price haha.

            I'm definitely not saying the PS Store has good prices, it just can be cost effective if you share and either buy old games when they hit sale or just buy them on day 1. The in-between time is the shit time, which is definitely why I would opt for a PS5 with a physical drive just incase something like this happens, but would continue to use the sharing/digital purchases for 90% of games.

        Only have Xbox atm. But I am all in on digital copies of games. Even having the Xbox Series X my preference is to buy digital so I can use it on 2 consoles at once. It's effectively half the price for my kids to play the same games with each other or against me.

        You don't have to pay RRP on titles unless you can't wait for a sale. There are weekly sales where you can pick up some absolute bargains. New games are discounted very quickly. I've only paid RRP for one title on Xbox and that was THPS1+2 Remastered, to lower its price i used the US store.

        Otherwise I just wait for sales and grab stuff at the same price as disc sales. Sometimes slightly more, sometimes slightly less. But even if its a few bucks more it's better for my situation where games frequently get used at same time as the kids love to play them online together.

      Whats the speed difference in moving a game from external hdd to internal hdd compared to reinstalling a game from the disc and do you have to install updates again.

      Digital version works for me, I don't buy games until there on sale. I jump between games alot and having a young kid swapping discs is a disaster waiting.

At the end of the day a person can shop where they want, but some people are not as aware that they will be forced into buying from 1 place only and will not have the future option of buying from other retailers where the likelihood of price drops and competition with competitors to drive price down happen. The physical version of PS5 console is better for most as it allows freedom to pick and choose between digital and physical at will and go where the bargain at the time is. Best of both worlds.

              @User50301: The way I saw it was giving a point of view on what someone is saying works for them just seems odd and redundant if not trying to be argumentative. It's different to giving a point of view on something when someone has asked about something. i.e. "Why should I not get the digital version" vs "I like the digital version, it works for me" - one asks for input, the other is just someone stating what they do. Commenting on something like the latter is usually just a pointless argumentative statement with the only goal being to, well, be argumentative.

              The one question they did ask was 'whats the speed difference with installing from a disc vs transferring from a hdd' - which you ignored, which also makes it seem just like an attempt to be argumentative.

              If we're just giving points of views on things where input hasn't been asked - Physical copies can be cheaper, but the ps4/5 also has a Share feature, so you can essentially get everything on the PS store (including PS Plus subscription) for 50% off if you are sharing with someone who has similar interests. You might pay 80-100$ for a new game on the PS store, vs 70-80$ for a new game at JB Hi Fi, but you and your friend can't play that physical copy at the same time, you both have to buy the physical game - or you could set up sharing, only purchase the game digitally once, split the cost and both be able to play it at the same time.

        It is definitely faster to plug in a USB HDD and transfer it to your PS4/5 than installing it again from the disc - especially with most discs not actually containing the full game as it exists now and just installing a portion of it so that you can download the actual current version of it haha. The extra cost of the HDDs though I guess. We use 99% digital but don't use HDDs. We just re-download it, though we are on FTTP so most things download pretty quick. I guess if we were super impatient we could just bump up from 100mbit to a 1gbit plan for the rest of the month.

      everything i've read point towards first/second quarter 2022.. something about GPU manufacturers prioritising bulk sales of their GPUs (or the chip components required for the GPUs? it's a bit hard to follow with the amount of wine i've been drinking lately) to mining firms and not gaming (which I would guess means the same time line for being able to buy an RTX 3000 series at some point in time for under a grand).

      Why would anyone buy the disc version if they already have a 4K disc player? Seems like throwing unnecessary money away on a noisier, uglier machine that has a completely redundant feature.

    Just a tip. if you really want the PS5, call around different JB's, Good guys etc. they may not announce that they have stock. its just who ever gets there first. one day my partner asked for one and I was like we would be waiting a few weeks or months to get one but next day I was near Chadstone shops and I called the home centre JB they had no stock and they wouldn't say who had stock. I called the JB in Chadstone shops and they had 2 disk versions but they couldn't put on hold etc. I went there and picked one up and soon after that they ran out of stock (a friend tried to call and they were out). maybe call around every few days and check if you're keen.

    A tip for anyone who trying to get the ps5, Follow @AustraliaPs5 on Twitter. they send out alerts to people who follow them as soon as a company like jb hi-fi or amazon list them on their websites. Was the only way I manage to pick up 2 consoles in 3 days. I have no association with them, just trying to help some of you out :)
