Good morning,

Today, it is unusual to find someone who does not use at least one battery powered device, such as a smart phone, e-book or tablet, on a daily basis. Gerintech has sought to introduce a low cost fix for the householder by exchanging standard sockets for ones that incorporate dedicated USB ports within the faceplate. These ports are capable of charge currents up to 2.1 Amps.

Today, it is unusual to find someone who… uses USB-A ports with only 2.1A (10.5W) total across 2 outlets!!

    • You don’t have kids 😆

      • +3

You charge your kids on 5W slow chargers?

      • +1

Don't they operate on solar power🌞
Put them in the sun & watch them run around!

Yes, smartbands & many kids devices need little power.
Maybe not tablets as suggested in this Ad - that would be so slow. (Is it charged yet?…)

With the cost of this device + installation for limited use for most - seems other more flexible solutions would be better. (Have drawers full of low powered chargers & powerboards!)

      10.5w across 2 outlets..hello 1985..well, almost

      • Well, not quite that ancient…
And USB (battery charging) - started with much lower charging (0.5A).
(USB 1.0 standard for data transfer was introduced in 1996. So many only saw USB on their PCs after then.)

Now we have Deals for 100W chargers… WATTBA!

      Exact same ad!
Warnings about installation only by electrician.

      • Unless you are in NZ. Then you can DIY these legally.

‘Frequently bought together’ for me is this power point gpo and a butter knife 😂

    • After you finish installation stick the butter knife to check if it is working 😜

  • +1

    Devil is in the detail.

2.1A is across BOTH ports. Your kids iPad's will take FOREVER to charge on these.
Do yourself and your kids a favour and get a powerpoint that has 2.1A on EACH port.

Every time a usb outlet deal comes up, some butt head always assumes that the sole purpose of these things are to charge phones and high powered devices like tablets. They come with chargers! Fast chargers, in fact. What if I told you there were other things that don't require such high power output? Like diffusers and nightlights? Jesus christ.

This out of date Ad suggests the use is exactly for that - smart phone, e-book or tablet.
So don't be surprised if people disagree with that.

Yes, plenty of low power uses, as already suggested (eg kids devices & smart bands).

But why pay for this product + expensive installation by electrician, when a powerboard & low powered chargers (that most already have) would do the same job you suggest.

      • But why pay for this product + expensive installation by electrician, when a powerboard & low powered chargers (that most already have) would do the same job you suggest.

Because people are easily swayed by a product with a snappy price & cashback without understanding the practicality or longevity for the offer. Sparkies would love seeing people grab this because they'll be back in a few weeks/months installing another (+ call out fee)

    • Seems OB is not just about great prices, but accurate advertising too ;-)

  • Why they cant put more powerful usb?

    • But then, how would they sell this old stock?

  • +1

If you need to ask how much will an electrician charge to install it, this isn't the product for you.

    • Why not? What if you're renovating the whole house?

    • +1

Not really difficult to install, but obviously not for the people who know nothing about cabling.

  • +1

There's soooo many other GPO's available that look better, faster charging… if you know the right place/sparky that has a good wholesaler look for the Trader brand (got some installed cheap and we love it)

This reminds me of cheap nasty sh*t that is being cleared out by other businesses with old D stock. The new PowerPoints available on the market are soooo much better in charge and look.

For the majority of users that have smart devices - this product would take forever to charge and would have been a great deal like 5 years ago. Getting a sparky to install only to upgrade out of frustration isn't what I call a good bargain.

It's akin to getting old tech for basement pricing that will frustrate more than it will please IMO
