Bank of Melbourne offer

For the guys who signed up for BOM for their $100 offer, I have to use the card 5 times.

Visa Debit Card (linked to their Bank of Melbourne SENSE Everyday account) by selecting the credit option (pressing 'CR') during an EFTPOS transaction at least five times between 1/02/2012 and 29/02/12 and another five times between 1/03/2012 and 31/03/2012.

But when i go to safeway and self check out, I pressed paying by Visa/Mastercard and swiped my card, but there was no credit option to press. there was only savings and cheque account.

Any advice? maybe i should try coles…

That is Woolworths, they decided not to all credit transactions on debit cards, so it should be fine anywhere but Woolworths Group stores.

  • Woolworths don't accept credit function on debit cards! But Coles do :)

  • Oh thanks! I had no idea, cheers

  • Oh…I guess i have just wasted the time of doing five purchase at woolies. I pressed CHQ for all my transactions… so is Coles, I tried it. they dont work on CR button

I might go and close this current sense account and reopen again…

CuteBird - where do u get info that Coles is works?

    • It works (or should work) on Coles, where did I get that info from? Personal experience!

      • Cutebird - I tried at two coles Chatswood and Hornsby. both not have no CR button

        • have you actually got a visa debit card? is there a visa logo on the front?

        • Maybe your card doesn't work, or your Coles branches don't allow it for some strange reason, definitely something abnormal on your end…

      • Cutebird - yes it is not working. i doubt is the card problem. i tried other places is working???

  • Woolworths stopped allowing debit visa card holders from using the credit function in April 2010. It caused an uproar mostly from credit union members, and includes other stores in the Woolworths group such as Big W, Dick Smith and Dan Murphy etc. Many people decided to boycott Woolworths but they haven't reversed their decision.

    See for example choice http://www.choice.com.au/reviews-and-tests/money/banking/sav…

  • Just push cheque. That's what they told me at St George when I opened it.

    • sraymond - but is that mean voided the offer condition. have u discuss this with them? We all look at this boring post becoz of the $100 bonus.

  • I don't think it makes a difference. It doesn't show any different on my statement and I pushed cheque sometimes and credit other times. They just want the round up feature to activate so the extra goes into the savings account. We will see when it comes time for them to hand over the $100. You will be right.

    • chq = eftpos transaction (with the possibility of cash out), use pin

      cr = visa transaction, signature

  • There is a difference, between chq and cr, so it's important to get it right or no $100 for you.

Cutebird, or others, When u go to the self check out, what do u select as the payment method? Visa, EFTPOS?

  • I already checked with BOM. there is a difference with CHQ or CR.

on your statement it will show eftpos for CHQ and Credit visa for CR.

i needed to close my account and reapply now since offer is still there

  • Yeah you need to do CR, CHQ won't work.

  • they have continued to extend the offer, went into BOM yesterday with my gf for her card, and she said the offer seems like its extended another month.

I also went to coles, and confirmed there CR works there! plus the grapes there were really nice for only 2.48 a kg, i'm giong there to do my 5 transactions.

  • after discussion with BOM i can confirm im not eligible for the $100 as i did the transaction on CHQ at woolies.

closed my account today. will reapply in about 2 weeks time and then shop at coles for 5 times next 2 months.

hope it go good, as it not available for existing account…

cloudy - u should post alot earlier as i think number of ppl stuff up on this one.

    • I posted as soon as I found out, only got the visa debit cards Monday.

It's a good idea to know the T&Cs as well lee

  • Why close your account. The offer is still good and as long as you do it the right way for two consecutive months you should get the $100.

  • I actually frustratingly worked this out for myself! Coles >> Woolworths for this offer!

  • i admit it could be a mistake to close the account. should have leave it and try another 2 months. chance is open it again could lose the bonus. but i was told the offer is not valid cause it is not a credit transaction.

  • "we'll give you $100 in March 2012"
So has anyone got their $100 yet? Or will they do it on 31/03/12?

    • Got my $100 yesterday.

    • hmm, i haven't been paid. people in the first promotion were supposed to be paid on 2 march according to the t&cs. i'll have to follow it up with the bank on monday

    • i rang up this morning and they said some payments are still being processed and these should be paid in the next couple of days

i rang up again today and i was told it was only for victorian residents. i have a screen dump of the promotion and it does not mention that. i said that it was not advertised as such and lodged a complaint with bank of melbourne. i will lodge a complaint with financial obudsman once i get a reply

      • Yeh I was told that too, but another CSR said "It's open to all Australians"
Anyway, please tell me how you go as I have not received the money and am not currently in Victoria either

  • So did any non- Victorian residents receive their cashback? The terms and conditions only mentioned about having an Australian resident address.

  • i got a cheque for $100 in the mail today. in the attached letter they admitted that it was open to all australian residents. that was in response to a phone complaint. no further communication was involved. so if you've complied with the requirements but haven't received your payment yet then ring up and make a formal complaint.

i also lodged a fos complaint which i will have to mark as resolved. if it helps anyone, this is what i wrote for the fos complaint:

Details of your dispute - please provide a summary of your dispute:
A promotion on the their website promised payment of $100 for 1) opening a account before 31/12/2012, 2) depositing $2000 in Jan+Feb and 3) making 5 Visa purchases in Jan+Feb. I have complied completely with each of these advertised requirements. I was subsequently told on 12/03/2012 by phone that only Victorian residents were eligible for payment. This additional condition was not advertised anywhere in the T&Cs on the website (reproduced below) or at any stage during the online sign up. The T&Cs wording also suggests it is open to all Australian residents ("*Visa Debit Card is available to… who have an Australia residental address…")

    Advertisted T&Cs:

What do you think is a fair and reasonable resolution to the dispute?
Payment of $100 as I have complied with all the advertised requirements of the promotion.

    • my mother also got paid today about a week after we lodged a complaint by phone with bank of melbourne. it was a real pain as i had to go over to her place to help her because she is old with poor hearing and the csr was still suggesting that it was for victorian residents only.

  • Me too told had to be Victorian said I would go to Fin Ombudsman. Got a call they are putting $100 into account. This is very questionable worth asking Ozbargain to feature on bargains so that everyone here knows it

  • I rang today and got a real gung ho CSR who was adamant it was only for Melbourne residents. When he couldn't find a decent link to blow me off, he put me onto a dead line. I rang again and as soon as I mentioned the Fin Ombudsman it was very different. They lodged an internal complaint and I should get the OK within 48 hours. Even though I pushed the wrong button fo the first month I had the account.

    • It is a shame that we have to chase our money. BOM should pay us automatically without needing us to go through the hassle of calling them.

  • i've also tried the buckscoop st george promos http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/67520 for $50 + $53. since they already have my details on file from the bank of melbourne promo it doesn't involve much hassle. if i get paid then good, if not then i haven't lost much.

  • WAAAAAH

  • +1

Got a very apologetic phone call telling me the $100 has been put into my account.

  • Anyone got their money that's due today (5/5/2012) yet?

  • i was very unimpressed with BOM. got the same run around saying it was for vic residents only. when i complained they said they would check my phone recordings. after a few days i got a call saying they checked the recordings and i was in the right and would get the $100 deposited into my account as a good will token. lucky i asked them once again before hanging up went i activated the card so i had proof. their complaints dept really pissed me off and didnt believe me and wasted my time so i ended up closing all my accounts with them.
