    so complicated…!!!

    • +13

This is Ozbargain…of course people will do this whilst patting their heads and rubbing their tummies simultaneously for $100.

      • +4

…whilst dancing and chewing gum in front of their KINECT/MOVE sensor/camera

        • +3

Which they bought recently due to the $50 cashback offer!

    • Nowhere near as bad as the hoops you have to go through for 6 months to get $50 out of ANZ…

  • -8

..and they hope you will close the other bank account and stay with them..

There is a Credit Card involved in this - you would need to suppy your life history (another bunch of financial advisors will be on to you..)

Definitively a deal for someone with a lot of time and good CREDIT history!

    • +7

      Visa DEBIT.

  • +2

You have to deposit at least $2000 EVERY month for the $5 monthly fee to be waived. Should keep that into account before opening up an account.

    • +1

an average ozbargainer depositing their monthly salary plus all the money theyve saved from all they deals they get shud have no problems

  • +2

    Bank of Melbourne SENSE fees:
Monthly account service fee (waived if you deposit a minimum of $2,000 by the last business day every month)

    http://www.bankofmelbourne.com.au/personal/bank-accounts/sav…

  • will they waive the $5 fee for students? can anyone outside Vic open an account with a valid Australian address or do you need to visit a branch to complete the account opening or is it possible to do it a Post office?

    • use the branch locator. there are some branches in brisbane (i think via st george bank)

edit: i'm not sure what the deal is between bank of melbourne and st george. might pay to give them a ring before wasting your time

  • If you aren’t an existing Bank of Melbourne customer, you will need to complete an identification check at a Bank of Melbourne branch to begin making withdrawals or deposits.

Do they have branches in Sydney?

    • if you're going to have to visit a branch anyways, you might as well just opening it there?

    • The account is opened online. Also, Bank of Melbourne is owned by Westpac, which also owns St George Bank. Westpac tends to be strict on ID requiring a JP signature, at least that was the case for Westpac Stockbroking, and i have heard loans are stricter at Westpac also, but have not had much experience with Westpac.

      • on the website it says:

        How to apply
        - Apply online
        - Call 13 22 66 and say "New Account" when prompted
        - Visit a branch

surely it is just easiest to visit a branch since they need to verify your identity anyway

  • Sweet! it's not that complicated really!

  • The only thing I would want to find out if you open the account prior to Dec 31 as per terms and conditions, and then don't deposit $2,000 in December, will you then be charged a monthly account fee for that month?

    • +1

i would say so, need to deposit in december as well

  • +1

Updated minutes from agm: we will bend you over from there on in, thank you!

  • seems a good deal if meet all criteria

  • Can you really trust those big banks?

  • +1

    Hi guys

Our I'd requirements are no different to any other financial institution in Australia. Big or small.
Another popular myth is " stricter lending". Banks want to lend you money.
The sense account is pretty awesome. Automated savings and if you use it as your everyday account where your salary is deposited, earning the $100 will be a breeze. Of course the salary deposit needs to be over 2000 per calendar month.

    pretty easy

    1. deposit 2grand in, transfer it back out the next day to get fee waived for the mont

    2. 5 transactions per month - buy 5 chocolate bars (or something cheap at woolies) and do 5 transactions at the self serve counter

    3. free $100

    4. close account

    win.

    • that is precisely what I plan on doing. ;)

I guess I'll hang on to the account and use it again at some point in time though.

    • I was just on the phone to Bank of Melbourne and they advised me that the money could not be withdrawn. That is; the balance as of March is to be $4000 (2 x $2000) and the account has to be at least three months old.

      • i would guess they are full of it. This wasn't in the t&Cs.

        • Agreed. I called them again and another employee said that you could transfer it out or whatever. She then told me that it was only available to residents of Victoria — but afterwards corrected herself and said I would be eligible (NSW)!

      • all that matters is the t&cs …

      • Follow-up call — Bank of Melbourne said that you are free to withdraw the cash again!

  • Applied last night. And then received an application rejected email this morning. Didn't say why.

    • Did you provide your TFN?

      • +1

I did. Just went to St.George branch and was told account can only be opened with an Vic address.

        • well they're wrong.. I just spoke with a Bank of Melb person who said that it's fine, and to drop into a St George branch for identification.

    • .

  • they called me and said that if you open a/c after the 2nd of the month you dont get charged a $5 fee in the first month i hope they are right becuase have to wait for the visa debit card to arrive. is it true you need to make 5 transactions per month to qualify too?

    • yeah that's correct. no a/c keeping fees for december. just transfer $2000 in Jan & feb & you won't get charged the $5 fee. and yep, you need to do at least 5 transactions per month (jan & feb) to qualify.

  • I just got told the fee is charged every month. No exceptions.
I also got told you need to bring your birth certificate or passport, plus your drivers license. I asked twice to make sure because that is a pretty extreme ID requirement.

  • i rang up and was told it is only available through bank of melbourne branches (ie victoria) and not st george. so not possible from other states.

    • it was possible for existing st.george customers to apply online.

  • +1

ok, so from what i understand, you could set up the account, transfer $2k a month into it, then transfer it straight back out and into your higher interest online savings account and u still get $100 as long as u use the card 5 times a month. Thats pretty good as long as there isnt a huge amount of pprwork. It'd probably take ages to do changes banking details thru work atm (xmas time) anyway.

  • I go told you can do the ID at any St George.

I asked twice about the birth certificate and drivers license requirement and he was adamant.

  • accord to sraymond - this bank seems like inconsistent as with my experience with st george.

anyway, just apply and see whats happen. nothing to lose

  • I did the ID at St George today. Drivers License and Medicare card. You need to ask them to send out the Visa Debit Card as well.

  • I just called up to activate internet + phone banking & order the Visa Debit Card - whole process only took about 10mins. It doesn't matter what state you're from, you just have to drop into a St George branch for identification, with Drivers License & Medicare Card (Passport doesn't seem to be required, so long as all forms of ID have the same info + name..)

To avoid $5 account keeping cost, deposit of $2000 needs to be made in Jan & Feb (not Dec, as the first month is free to allow for setting up…) The $100 will be deposited in March.

    Pretty easy! :D

    • Identify yourself: Your account is now ready to receive deposits but for security reasons you can only withdraw from your account after we identify you through one of these methods:
      - Visit a Bank of Melbourne branch with sufficient ID (eg. Passport, Drivers Licence, Medicare card).
      - Download and complete the Australia Post ID* Check form and take it to your nearest post office.
      - Download and complete the ID form* attached and send it to: Bank of Melbourne Processing, Reply Paid 1286, Melbourne VIC 8060.

so you can just do standard id check at australia post. at branch is probably quickest

it says my new accounts are open (instantly).

i'll still shuffle $2k through account at end of december just to be safe (it says it accepts deposits).

(Dupe - hopefully someone sees my post)
I was just on the phone to Bank of Melbourne and they advised me that the money could not be withdrawn. That is; the balance as of March is to be $4000 (2 x $2000) and the account has to be at least three months old.

        • WHAAAT!? that SUCKS. I'm canceling mine and not bothering about the identification.

        • +1

Too much hassle unless for me. I got a flyer in my letterbox today from the local branch. lol. They are not going to get many customers from that who can set it up in a few hours of open business.

        • Cancelled it this arvo. No fees as it was cancelled in the first month. Too much hassle & I'm not going to continue with them anyway.

        • i do not think that is correct. the t&cs do not suggest that. they do not mention anything about maintaining a minimum balance. the only requirement is depositing a minimum of $2k each month and using visa debit card.

        • Follow-up call — Bank of Melbourne said that you are free to withdraw the cash again!

  • Yep, I put the two grand in for December. This account also does the rounding up when you make purchases. The branch told me to push cheque to avoid this. Don't know if I can be bothered.

  • ohh only saw this ad now~!!! does anyone know whether it needs to get everything done (like getting the ID check done and activated the a/cs) by 31 Dec 2011 or just need to apply it online by 31 Dec 2011? only have few more days before 31 Dec…….and things will only be opened on 28 Dec, 2 days to get everything done by them seems not possible….

    • i applied online on late friday night & it said the account was open at the end of the online application process. i have also received sms with internet banking id. so all i need to do is visit bank on next working day to verify id and it is complete. imo it is still easily doable.

personally i think you just need to open the account (apply online and have it say that the account is open) before end of december but that is pure speculation on my behalf

      • I applied on Monday last week, account was activated by Wednesday and I called up Thursday to check. FYI: you need to call them to order the Visa Debit card! (or organize it when you visit the bank)

  • Signed up yesterday. Very easy, and I did it with a drivers license and keycard.

  • +1

i see they've continued the promotion (similar promotion but with different dates). so if you haven't already signed up you can still do so before end of january now

Open a new Bank of Melbourne SENSE Everyday and a SENSE Savings account by 31 January 2011, deposit $2,000 in both February and March 2012, use your linked Visa Debit Card* at least five times in both months, and we'll give you $100 in April 2012.

  • My partner and I each opened an account for the $100 bonus. I wonder whether opening a joint account in our joint names makes us eligible for a further $100 bonus.

    • no

Excludes customers who have held a Bank of Melbourne SENSE Everyday account and SENSE Savings account in the last three months and all jointly held SENSE Everyday accounts.

  • Just followed a pop up screen when I logged in and scored one year Bitdefender Internet Security 2012

    Here's how it's done.

    Click on Messages

    Then news

Then click on 1 year of Bitdefender protection

Fill out the form and they will email you the link and serial number.

Not sure if you can do it more than once. But it looks possible.

  • one thing i learnt is you have to select 'cheque' on atm/bank@post (and probably eftpos) to access your transaction account. 'savings' accesses the high interest account, which was different to what i was used to with other banks.

    • "Visa Debit Card (linked to their Bank of Melbourne SENSE Everyday account) by selecting the credit option (pressing 'CR') during an EFTPOS transaction at least five times between 1/02/2012 and 29/02/12 and another five times between 1/03/2012 and 31/03/2012."

I was just about to paste that!

  • i think the deadline to open an account has been extended and you are right you need to press credit 5 times to qualify not cheque at woolies nor online credit purchases will qualify i was told on the phone so dont get caught out.

    • it is frightening how quickly credit transactions are processed at coles self-serve terminals. just swipe card and it is done.
