Just alerting everyone that the price of this SSD has dropped again!
I previously bought one at the higher price.
edit: It has dropped AGAIN to $165.17.
This is a brilliant price, compared to local stores of $210-220.
This does suggest that the price is quite volatile at the moment.

The Crucial M4's are considered to be one of the most reliable brands of SSD, and I would definitely recommend it over others.

This is a product that retails for $219 here, and that would be a good price.

  • Great price!

No wonder retail sales are down!

    • +1

Just a remind to those bought the ssd recently, you may ask amazon to refund the difference between the price you paid and this $169.95, I saved $8.04, and my ssd is shipping soon.

      • Mind telling us the procedure for this?
Is there a link I should read?

        • it is in the help section, just contact amazon by send them a email.

        • @couger

          http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=hp_4…

          "Post-Order Price Match Policy

With the exception of TVs, we do not offer post-order price matching when an item's price drops after you buy it. Our prices regularly change, and the price you paid when your order shipped was the lowest price we were able to offer at the time. We consistently offer competitive prices on everything we carry because we know low prices are very important to our customers."

Did you just send an email asking for the difference to be repaid? Because after reading that, I'm not sure they were supposed to have given you it.

Edit: Oh, and thanks for the tip.

it worked.. just send them an email

here is the response i got..

        Hello,

Thanks for contacting us about the recent price change on Allen Edmonds Men's Kendall Plain Toe Oxford,Black Patent,9.5 E. I recognize you have a choice of retailers and appreciate that you prefer to order from us.

I've reviewed your order and see that the price change is significant from the time the item shipped.

Under the circumstances, I'll make an exception for you and issue a refund for the price difference in the amount of $42

  • Keeps heading down, I'll wait a few months until I need to order

Still cannot afford one myself however.

    • Great, thanks for that URL, will use it for other products I have my eye on as well!

  • Now!! 169.95 keeps heading south

$1 per gig and I'm there.

    • +1

      I hear ya!

      • Ditto!

        • Me too!

    • Not sure it will go that cheap just yet, I don't think theres any new models on the way. But I could be wrong

  • FYI folks, I upgraded to 0309 F/W last night on my M4 128GB SSD and it was noticeably quicker. It felt 'fresher'.

    Great SSD.

    • Can I update the firmware without formatting the drive? I'll backup before I do it of course but hopefully it's just a 5 minute job to put the new firmware on there and reboot.

      • +2

Takes no longer than half a minute. No need to format but backup is definitely recommended. Download the firmware. Burn to CD or make bootable USB. Reboot machine and install the firmware. Installation part was almost instant for me.

  • Since when did Amazon ship to Australia? Was this recently?

    • They have for ages but annoyingly you cant seen to tell till you get to the checkout. Often find something i want then find out during the checkout it will not ship to AU.

      • Amazon usually publishes this information under Product Details.
Shipping section will usually state if the product is availalbe for intl clients.

Search engine for amazon stuff that ships to australia.

        • Thanks, that's a really handy site

        • Just goes to prove the theory that on the internet, If you think it should exist it probably already does.

I was thinking there must be a way to do this.

          Thanks.

    • They don't ship items with lasers and protein. As of Jan 2012 they relaxed a ban on hole saws

I pity the fool that buys from megabuy!

      • What's your prediction for the person who buys from Megabuy?

        • +1

          My prediction? PAIN!

    • +3

It's not a price drop due to stronger AUD, it's a price drop by Amazon.

    • That's a big price difference. 18% more for local warranty? These drives are quite reliable, I'd rather save 18%.

    • +4

You need to include mandatory delivery in the Megabuy option since they don't offer pick ups. $171.50 (or $165.21 if you use a credit card with no international transaction fees) on Amazon includes shipping.

Megabuy is $209.03 + $15.95 delivery cost = $224.98 delivered. Which is $59.77 more than Amazon, or 36.2% dearer.

  • Not bad performance/price wise. See http://www.harddrivebenchmark.net/high_end_drives.html

  • How do these compare to Intel 320 SSD 120GB?

    • -1

intel is a poor choice for performance, even since the x25-m originals they havent been able to get the same performance, the new 510 is even caped with I/O to lower than that of the x25-m! even the new 520 is weak as crapp,.. having said that if you care for reliability they are by far the best,, at 0.1% failure rate, with ocz up like 7.9% … cant remember the link i had…. iv owned the x25m 80gb and 510 120gb and would the x25-m any day. in dont think the 510 is even 6gbs? though could be wrong about that.

      • Intel are just releasing performance SSD's, bit late but hey exciting!

      • The intel 510 is SATA3 6gbps and while it may not be the top dog in the synthetic benchmarks, its still near the top, and actually flogs many of the other SSDs in real world testing. They may not be the cheapest or best value, but they are certainly not worse than the old SSDs…

The 320 has transparent, hardware-based encryption, which is nice for those concerned about data security since OS-level disk encryption (e.g. TrueCrypt) has issues with SSDs in terms of performance and wear. It also has a capacitor that stores just enough power to write cached data in the event of an unexpected power loss, which is a unique feature.

Performance difference depends what you look at - the charts I've seen show the 320 neck and neck with other SSDs in Windows boot and app/game load times, but falling behind in other measures.

  • So depressing being on the Marvell 9128 SATA 3 Chipset :(
I won't be able to use these to the full potential.

    • Really want to get it… but I don't want to stick it in my somewhat outdated PC (uses SATA2).

      • Get it anyway! I'm stuck on SATA2, and in IDE mode (instead of AHCI), so my M4 is running way slower than everyone else's :(

That said, it's still a HUGE improvement over my old hard drive!!! I never want to go back :)

    • The performance difference between the fastest hard drive and even the slowest SSD drive is enormous. I have a 30Gb Kingston basic SSD as a boot drive on one machine. It ran rings around a 10,000rpm WD hard drive in terms of boot speed and random file access. The fastest HDD can't match the slowest SSD in most situations. People often look at peak sequential data transfer speeds when comparing performance, but this is only one small measure of what the drive can do.

  • jawesome :) I can never have enough 'second' hard drives for games/apps

  • Down another US$5 now… Now US$164.99 plus delivery

    • Yep, was just getting the link for a friend and noticed the drop again!
I've updated the post to reflect this, instead of posting ANOTHER Crucial M4 from Amazon deal.

      • Lol, that was shortlived, it's back up to $169.95 that I can see.

  • How long does shipping take?

    • anything from a week to 3 weeks

      • Mine so far (placed an order Feb 1)
February 7, 2012 09:40:09 PM AU Arrived at destination country
February 4, 2012 06:01:00 PM Carlstadt NJ US Departure Scan
February 3, 2012 12:51:03 PM Carlstadt NJ US Arrival Scan

  • Why did price drop again? That's like 3 times in 5 days. Are they crazy?

    • I'm guessing the value of the US dollar has something to do with it.

  • yup… dropped to US$157.95 now
