      updated. thanks

  • I am not sure about the brand. I bought the 32gb flash drive before - data was lost when transferring and it happened twice… make sure you don't use it for something important

    • Strange, it seems likely you had a faulty device. I picked one up from 2 sales ago, use it frequently and have had no issues.

    • i read an article about that, (but it was typically larger drives) basically they put a small amount of memory on the drive, the firmware on the drive simply restarts writing from the beginning when the drive gets full.

basically a scam, dont think this would do that though…

      • +3

Yeah those are counterfeit USB drives.

And what you're referring to is actually typically found in Chinese counterfeit External USB-powered HDDs, where they simply place a 128Mb memory module inside the case of a USB-powered HDD and have it write data in a continuous loop with a little firmware hack, so it seems as if it has more capacity.

        • Actually, it originated in USB flash drives, moving on to external HDDs.

Either way, it is getting increasing difficult to avoid the counterfeit goods online - buying from eBay is always a gamble.

  • Pretty decent drive. Picked one up last time.

  • Actually I was thinking to buy a Corsair Voyager in the morning and saw this review said Patriot Supersonic has better performance http://www.cnet.com.au/corsair-voyager-usb-3-0-32gb-33932307…. Build quality is not that good as Corsair though I guess.

    • Hmmm I have a Voyager 3.0, only it's 16GB and it does ~30-35MB/s write, which would be faster than this one according to the specs. But it seems they underestimate performance xD

    • Actually, I've heard the voyagers are extremely flimsy. They dont look it, but from memory they flex and break at the plug end.

i just got a 64gb from ebay for $42 and its in the shape of a gold bullion bar. i would have bought this if it were posted earlier

    • is it worth it's weight in gold?

      • Maybe he was mislead instead of gold it was copper :)

  • +1

well, I bought this when it was on sale last time. The only issue I have with it is the retractable USB plug feature thingy. It doesn't stay in put anymore, ergo I have to actually hold the end of it to put it in USB port. As posted by allseason, the build quality is not good.

    • +1

Well ive had mine for 6 months and not had a problem, Im a little careful when pulling it out is all. Not just yanking it, I do that with something else.

  • +1

I know that this drive is USB 3.0 and hence has its theoretical maximums read/write speeds as listed, but does anyone know what real world values are? Any people own these that can give me an idea as to what typical speeds they experience for copying x264 stuff?

    • Patriot is pretty reliable with the specs they state

    • Sequential Read : 67.285 MB/s
      Sequential Write : 26.308 MB/s

MSY has the best customer service around, hands down! Haha

I thought it was the asian manner that made their customer service so bad, but then I got bad customer service from a white guy! Must be due to their staff training curriculum!

    • +4

PC DIY is a store in Box Hill run by asians and they are very polite and helpful. Most importantly their prices were as cheap as MSY.

Oh and they were two doors down from MSY.

Funny how the MSY Box Hill store shut down..

      • +1 for PC DIY service > MSY and similar prices - Hence I haven't been into a MSY for ages.

        • What about in Sydney? Anyone got recommendations close to CBD or inner city?

      • I live at Box Hill and I dont recommend anyone to buy from PC DIY. They are polite but they are doggy. What they do is that they price exactly the same as MSY but they ONLY have stocks for those high-end brands. So basically they lure you with a fake price sheet and then try to sell you the more expensive alternatives. Good customer service costs a price and system builders like me would rahter save the money.

        • +1

Ever think that maybe the cheaper ones just sell out faster? I've never had any troubles with them… But I usually phone or email my order through to confirm first.

        • +2

ive had a pretty bad encounter with pcdiy. before that i thought they were nice and polite, but i was wrong.

its a long story, but basically they sold me a used motherboard (could tell it was used due to fingerprints + permanent marker on it)

they told me they had received a brand new board from asus for me. i went to pick it up (could see a couple on the shelf as well) got home, opened it up and it was clearly used. called them and went back to store. they denied saying it was new blah blah blah, gave me a real hard time. and refused to refund/replace (rest of the boards magically disappeared off shelf in 1 hour).
ended up getting a refund due to a little loophole in the scenario. went next door to msy.

i avoid dealing with them from now on

        • +1

No, I am almost 100% sure that they are doing it on purpose. Try the popular budget brands like Kingston/Powercolor/HIS etc and you will find out. TBH, after building PCs for almost 10 years there is a reason I always pick MSY over the others.

        • Hm, I recently tried to buy a 32gb USB stick and they were sold out of sandisk and kingston. They only had another brand I hadn't heard of.

Ryang could be right though, popular/cheaper brands could just sell out quickly. Milkguru's story is pretty horrible though, but I've only had positive experiences from PC DIY (I don't count 'sold out' as a negative so far in my limited experience with them).

        • You ever heard of MSY running out of stock in those brands for months?

        • +2

RE: MSY out of stock; it was the reason I went to PC DIY in the first place.. I'd been buying from MSY for quite a while (@ Box Hill), but when I went to pickup an order I'd place for a mate, they wanted to swap a heap of items for different models.

I wasn't very happy, but I took what items they had in stock that I had ordered, then walked down to PC DIY and managed to pickup the rest, same prices.

However, I haven't shopped at PC DIY since the Box Hill MSY closed, so that should also be noted.

      • +1

I think MSY moved bcoz they wanted a larger showroom. The only reason I went to Pcdiy instead of MSY is that there was a huge line in MSY which left me no choice. However, there is one thing I want to mention. They do price match MSY, Centrecom etc if they have stock.

        • +1

They can still say "no stock" even when they have it.

        • I just dont like the fact that they use fake price sheet. I cant remember how many times I have to go MSY Mitcham even there is a PC DIY right next door.

      • +1

@milk guru: I get so pissed when I find my "brand new" item has been handled before, and reboxed. I've had it a couple times from various places. Like my PSP from jbhifi having someones name already entered in it!

        • MSY did it too with a computer case, not only they gave me a returned case they also swapped the original psu with a less powerful one.
This is why such shops should be forced to shut down….

    • +3

"Must be due to their staff training curriculum!"

      What training?

They work there because they're related to the owner or they married his daughter/niece/cousin.

    • @houpaeng your feedback in not constructive.

      • His intent wasn't to be constructive. It just (sarcastically) re-enforces what most people already know fully well - MSY's got cheap(est) prices, but they're dodgy.

        • Unfortunately this happens because there are too many dodgy computer assemblers so they get what they deserve.
I ended going there for a principle after I got some bad "feedback", if everyone does the same, I'm 100% sure msy will change it's policy, this is math.

  • I bought it during last sale.. decent flash drive..dont waste your money buying cheap ebay USBs until and unless you buy the branded one from ebay..

  • +1

got mine few weeks back > http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/61028

so far so good, have to be careful when puttin in and out of usb, makin sure pullin from the back blue bit not white bit due to shitty mechanism

also in NTFS so didnt work on my ps3 or bravia…speeds are def better than my 2.0 lexars, toshibas, kingstons

  • I purchased this last time, it stopped working the 3rd time I used it.

Very disappointing considering my previous USB has been working for so many years.

    • +1

      take it back to MSY.
they should replace it on the spot.
and if they dont demand they do!

  • just went and picked one up then, pretty good deal.

hopefully it doesnt break on me like the few others, however it has a 2 year warranty

  • +1

I bought one last time they did this special its fast even on USB2, no data loss (I stop all usb devices before removal).

    • I know too many people don't stop the usb device from status bar, then they cry because the drive stopped working.

      • Oh, the old "hey look the status bar has finished moving I can rip it out now" mentality..

PS. I've done that before as well……..

      • I hate that as well. My cousin broke my mp3 doing that years ago. When I was using Windows 98 never had to do that though…

  • Picked up 3 at the last sale. The USB device is decent. Much faster than my other Sandisk USB 2.0. The spring mechanism is awful and broke after 3 days. Got the shits so took the thing apart… Turns out the mechanism is quite easy to fix. Just need to reposition the spring.

BTW what is this no name brand. Sounds like it was started by some redneck american

  • They dont do delivery?

  • +1

MSY, where the website shows an item 'in stock', but when you get to the store they just can't find any! I have had this experience with them MANY times. Lately the stores seem to carry less items in stock too.

At least scorptec really have in stock what their website shows, even if most items are a few percent more $. I have probably wasted a combined 2 weeks of my life at MSY in line, waiting for imcompetent staff, looking for items, and ultimately going elsewhere when they don't have any or the last one on the shelf is an obvious return.

Oh, and NEVER try to ring MSY as most stores just let it ring even if the staff are doing nothing. Professional Phone Ignorance training.

Its an opportunistic world we live in, particularly shopping at MSY where you never know if your experience will be worthwhile or a frustrating waste of time, regardless of planning.

    • Just picked up 4 of these babies from Ultimo store.

Tried reserving online but no confirmation - i headed in anyway and they were happy to honor the online price.

Went in at 11am, still had about 25-30 left.

PS: they have gone from self-serve back to 'msy-serve' so expect a queue.

  • Picked up four of these from South Hurstville, they had a whole bunch of them hanging on the wall. Had no issues with price or stock. Not many people there either, so did not have to wait long.

  • I actually got one this time :D

  • Just picked two up and running HDSpeed on it.
Specs say upto 60MB/s read 25MB/s write.

    HDSpeed says:

    USB3 (average): 52MB/s read, 25MB/s write
    USB2 (average): 31MB/s read, 20MB/s write

Lives up to specs quite well. Only thing is the niggly design. My motherboard requires a bit of pressure to connect USBs at the front and the clicking sheath doesn't hold up to pressure so I have to be delicate.

  • This is good buy. I should have brought two instead of 1.

    • You didn't bring any, you bought 1 though.

  • More than $1 a GB, bah! :P

    usb 3, nice deal.
