WD 4TB Elements SE Portable Hard Drive Black WDBJRT0040BBK $123 + Delivery ($0 to Some Area) @ Officeworks eBay

170

I've found this while looking for a backup drive. it's about $30.75/TB (hard to find this price recently), it looks like a 95MB/s i/o storage (slower than some usb stick 150MB/s), it's good for daily backup. currently found in ebay and officework website. I don't know when will this offer ends. enjoy.

  • Interested but the reviews (albeit a small sample size) are not that good. Any other experiences with these?

    • I've been using a couple of these for back up over the last few years and never had an issue.

  • Every WD portable drive I've purchased (other sizes not this size) have failed in 6 months. I always avoid WD.

    • Is there a brand that you do trust?

      • +2

Toshiba portable drives I've purchased have had the least failure rate in my experience. No idea why. I've had 1 failure in 6 Toshiba USB HDD of different sizes.

Also WD solders the SATA connections to the USB, so in case of USB failure, there's no easy way to re-use the drive or even recover your data

@Bluebench: As far as I'm aware the only ones that come with a sata connector that you can Schuck the drive is Seagate. I think everyone else solders the connectors directly.

I've had the opposite experience. Seagate is touch and go for me where as all my WD devices have lasted without issue.

    • I have some 9 year old ones still usable today, mostly holding isos and photos

  • A lot of WD portable drives are not shuckable as the USB port is integrated to the drive directly. Something to be noted.

And yes I agree with one of the comment above. My only failed 2.5 inch drives (out of about a dozen I ever used) was a WD, too. And the built-in USB port is a real headache.

N.B. Aren’t we only talking about $ per TB when a drive is shuckable?
