My address at Kenthurst 2156 has once again been delayed from May-June to Oct-Dec 2021 for the NBN. Currently using Telstra ADSL2 which is 0.5 - 0.8 mbps which is awful.
Are there any viable internet suggestions that I can try?
Thanks.
Still no NBN in June, 2021

Unfortunately I don't think Sydney is classed as regional or remote Australia.
Kenthurst is a mix of Sky Muster, fixed wireless, FTTP and FTTC. What have nbn planned for your premises?
Ok, is there anyway I can change technology for something to be installed quicker? My address was given FTTP but it keeps getting pushed back since 2019.
@Givme2bucks: Nah you have to wait for FTTP. What is up with the delay? Did the builder not do the required paperwork?
@Twix: I have no idea haven't ever seen any work done in the street and any technicians. Guess I'll try calling NBN again and try getting some response but it was supposed to be connected this month.
@Givme2bucks: Maybe that is done and all that is left is the work inside the premises. When you call ask for a complaint reference number. Shoot an email to [email protected]
@Givme2bucks: Be thankful that you won the Kenthurst NBN lottery and will eventually have FTTP.
I am in Kenthurst and stuck on Skymuster which totally sucks.
What's your 4G Coverage like with Telstra, Optus and Voda?
Do you have many devices?
Dual Sim phone?
How much data do you use?I'm using felix mobile which uses the Vodafone network which was working well however it hasn't been working since 31/5/21 due to 'network maintenance'. I use my phone to hotspot my PC and use around 300Gb a month.
If you have decent Optus coverage and need internet faster than 0.5 Mbps, you could always buy a couple of these in separate orders
Edit:
Or Kogan Simsworking since 31/5/21 due to 'network maintenance'.
felix mobile = kogan = vodafone,
@bazingaa: Just realised that too… stick to Optus/Telstra sims.
The NBN exec's probably re-appropriated the funds for your area straight into their $75 million bonuses.
And yet Scomo had a problem with Australia Post's couple of watches…
Thats because NBN is a boys club.
In all seriousness, I just realised that owners have to leave the black NBN box at their premises, regardless of if they move.
You lie OP. The Liberal's "faster, cheaper, sooner" NBN has already finished and was finished on time and on budget with rocket speeds like up to 100Mbps with only a few dropouts here and there.
OP should make a complaint with his local MP or write to the relevant minister. Worth a shot.
hahahahaha, is it? :P
Yes.
Is Optus 5G home internet an option?
Anyone with Optus 5G care to speak about their service? Have friends connected on Optus home 5G and they haven't had a great time on it.
I'm on Telstra 5G 400GB. Used to have Mate NBN as well. Decided to cancel the NBN since I use the 5G more often when I'm about and such. The speed is much better than my FTTC 100mbps.
250-300 Download and 30-50 Upload
Optus 5G isn't available in my area yet
All 4G and 5G services depend on your specific address/location.
Hence best to run download tests with your smartphone with various sims to see which one works best for you.
However some carriers use an exclusive band for home broadband so important to test that one at your location. For example Optus has 2300 reserved for home broadband.
There are smartphone apps that allow you to see this
You could look at Starlink and see if that is available in your area.
Problem is, it's a bit expensive at the moment. $709 in initial hardware fees plus $139 a month - $100 more than what OP pays now.
Price isn't everything tho. Look at what they are getting now.
Starlink dont have a licence to operate in urban areas yet.
Wireless Home broadband (4G or 5G) is very good if you have good mobile reception with any carriers
A quick check of:
https://www.whistleout.com.au/MobilePhones/Guides/Telstra-5G…
Shows that apart from small patches of Fuggels rd./Coolalie Plc, Binalong rd./Noland Place and Mareiba rd. you have good 5G coverage - even tho their "plug in you address" for mobile coverage says no.
If the map can be trusted, I'm getting a minimum of 150Mbps/5Mbps and often 290Mbs/15mbps up on 5G with sub 20ms pings on what their map shows as an "edge" area. I'm currently on a $59 300 Gb per month [ extra 150Gb/$10 reduction for 12 months] 5G data plan from Telstra via JB Hi-Fi which blitzes anything I can get via FTTN. That offer may be finished however a 5G subscriber fight seems to be breaking out as Voda and Optus come to the party. A current offer is https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/624058, which is still comparable to FTTN offerings while offering far better speeds
Then again, if you're getting FTTN or even FTTC, it'll be worth the wait.
I'd get a $5 Aldi SIM if you are not now with Telstra. A fair signal on that [Telstra wholesale] then a full Telstra service coupled with Officeworks excellent offer on the Motorola 5g should have you up and running. If 400 Gb a month isn't enough, even the 1.5Mpbs speed till the end of the month will beat what you have now…
It seems my property is on the border of the coverage area as well. I have tried an Aldi sim and I get 2 bars connection at best with speeds from 6-8mbps.
That would be on Telstra's wholesale network, which doesn't use the towers they share with Optus or 4GX. Boost have the full retail coverage, 4Gx but no 5G. I get my download speeds on two bars on the full Telstra network. Although phones vary as to how good a signal each bar represents, that's a Good Sign[tm].
This:
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/628759post from T-Man comes with the 5G modem I am using. Apparently the antennae ports don't work for 5G, but do for 4GX [which the Aldi test shows you are good for] which the modem will fall back too if 5G is not available - and also carries the upload traffic. 4Gx here offers 74/24 regularly on tests and is quite usable.
One point that the major telecos may hope you don't notice is that as this is a mobile modem, a single person can have an effective 5G mobile plan with all the data you can eat for as little as $5 a year if you don't need calls [Aldi SIM] or $130 [current Kogan Small offer] with unlimited local calls by leaving the phone on WI-Fi data and logging on to your Internet. Calls will also be VoWifi!
The discussion in the post wold also be worth following, and you have 12 days to wait for a better offer - tho the suggestions JB Hi-Fi may try to beat it ignore that they are both owned by the same group, but probably rely on their being franchises.
Switching over to 5G using that modem was as simple as logging into my current modem router, switched it to access point mode, then just disconnected the DSL link and connected the new modem's LAN port to the WAN port on the old one. You can leave this modem plugged in. After 16 hours it lets the charge drop to, and hold at 65% which is the sweet-spot for long life. The battery is replaceable.

Yea that map is hopelessly optimistic. I have tried all three carriers (Boost, Optus, Voda) at several houses in Kenthurst and you are lucky to get 10mbs on 4G, 5G is out completely unless you are at the shops/village.
If you have a look at the RFNSA maps there are hardly any towers out here - Kenthurst is a communications backwater.
Ditch the ADSL, especially at those feeds.
I simply use my phone's HOT SPOT to connect everything - TV, radio, computer, and tablet. All on wifi.
Up your phone's data plan. I have 100gigs per month for $49.This is all you need.
Sky Muster service?
