Buy an Airtag for 45$(apple website price) and then invest in a Belkin secure holder for 15$. Wow ! People indeed have quite a lot of spare money

    • There's always this: https://www.apple.com/au/shop/product/MX842ZP/A/airtag-hermès-bag-charm-fauve

  • If anyone's wondering, it's $14.95 each ($24.95 without coupon), not four, and it's just a ring, so it doesn't really protect your precious Airtag from scratches, despite the description.

I find it incredible that a backpack made to hold a 15 inch laptop costs $12.84 with free shipping and yet a teeny tiny piece of silicone material that has been mass produced with injection moulding manages to cost at least $15~25 dollars.

that Belkin brand name can't be that prestigious, can it? I think of low-end N300 routers and crappy computer mice with optical sensors when it comes to Belkin.

    • Basically drop-shipping with their brand name on it and heaps of margin

  • Belkin Strap on

  • I would argue that my tile is much cheaper, but then I remember they try to get you on a monthly subscription for (less) things Apple do for free.

    • Of course. But also in Australia the Tile network isn’t big enough to be truly useful. The Find My/iPhone network definitely is

      • Partnering with Amazon makes it a bit more appealing though. https://www.cnbc.com/2021/05/07/amazon-partners-with-tile-to…

        • Scan through the article.
Amazon is trying to use their Sidewalk feature of Echo devices to extend Tile network.
          It is better than nothing.
But I can see two small problems here:
          1. If I drop my thing in a park or a playground the chance of someone walking by with iPhone is much higher than a chance of someone bringing Echo device there and somehow powering it up and connecting to the Internet.
          2. Sidewalk itself is "sharing your internet connection with random strangers". Everyone I know disables this feature the moment they discover it.

That’s my take. I think Alexa was late to get to AU and Amazon didn’t get the same jump on the market as they got in other regions. At the same time Googles been consistently giving the things away through promos run by various companies.

I had a look recently at smartphone stats for Australia, and locally over 50% of smartphone sales are iPhones as of last year. Apple has a huge penetration rate in Australia which in turn strengthens AirTags utility beyond that in some other markets where Apple is less dominant. The fact every iPhone contributes to the network, as well as iPads and other Apple products, is a fairly big deal.

If you have the Tile app you can bring up a map that shows how many tile users are within your area. The numbers tile reports doesn’t seem overly high for the area shown on the map in the app for where I am. We’re talking up to 1300 users for most of north Canberra which is pretty low and I’d imagine 50-100 times less than what Apples pulling in the region.

If you have an Android then tiles fine. If you’re an Apple user I think AirTags the way to go in Australia.
