I challenge you to find cheaper - keep in mind this is an ultrabook which do cost more than the norman laptops. to give you an idea we have brand new 2nd gen i3s in stock for $499, but ultrabooks usually cost twice as much… same model is in harvey and bing lee for $940.

    • +7

Note: Ultrabook. Ultrabooks are 800+ and to see one for 700 is a step in the right direction.

I agree the specs arent great but for an Ultrabook for $699 its a great deal. Static ice shows next cheapest of $799. Only downside is how involved it is to get discount.

      • -4

its only a simple facebook comment :P surely it's not that hard lol.

        • +15

It is quite hard if you choose not to use FakeBook! ;)

  • +1

The storage bit…. Hdd and ssd???
    Ultrabook without ssd?

    • +3

It has a 20GB SSD for the O/S, thus making it stupidly fast, responsive and boot up times of 4-5 seconds.
Then, a secondary 320GB HDD for your data as clearly a 20GB wont cut it!

        • +6

Well OzBargain mods modify the post if it's not detailed enough so excuse the information you may see as irrelevant, but some other people might want to know which is why its there :) GPU is onboard Intel HD3000 graphics accelerator (onboard), which is standard across just about all of the ultrabooks out there at the moment. I'll add that part in to the post now.

        • +11

Its an ultrabook and an i3, do you seriously need people to spell out what GPU it has?

Regarding the HDD, if you want a pure SSD system, they ranges from 64 -256GB and costs at least a few hundred more. Acer's approach is similar to Seagates's Momentus XTs, this is to maintain the fast boot times required by Intel's Ultrabooks spec while keeping the price down.

        Icic
        Thx

      • +2

        it doesn't quite work that way according to notebookcheck, the i5 has the same 20Gb ssd/320gb hdd setup;;
'Regardless, the 20GB SSD is responsible for saving current memory to the drive. This means wake-up and resume times out of hibernation are almost instantaneous, which Acer calls Green Instant On. All components of the Windows OS are still located on the mechanical drive, however, so cold boot times see no benefit.
Keep in mind that the SSD cannot be accessed by normal means as it does not show up as a letter drive on Windows'
so only suspend/resume is quicker with the 20Gb ssd, no difference with windows!

        • Was just about to explain all of this but you've explained it perfectly.

The 20GB SSD is used as a temporary cache.

Bottom line is - start up time is the same it's only instant on and off from sleep and hibernate that benefit.

Even loading programs while in Windows may not load quicker depending on what is cached and what is not.

A real ultrabook would have a proper SSD.

        • 20GB SSD is used as a temporary cache.

So, this is inferior to Intel's SRT or equivalent?

  • +2

Having to like something on FB in order to get a discount is ridiculous, its so easy to open up a fake account rather than use your real one.

    • making the discount even easier to get!

      • If I like you on facebook would you give me $200 off the Acer Iconia tablet that you are selling for $399?

I think its a great deal for the both of us as a like on facebook is worth $200.

        I'm serious.

        • +6

The discount is actually funded by Acer to be honest, as stated below they want to spam the heck out of the new models as its their current "hero product". I'd love to be able to give $200 discounts out willy nilly but we can't! If you like we have some acer factory repacked iconias for $300? but a $200 iconia is currently unheard of (except for in your imagination, of course :P)

        • +1

          Thanks for response.

Is there alot of excess stock with these tablets? Do you see a future where they will be discounted heavily?

      • +3

not too sure, box damaged stock isn't something we can order, Acer just offer them to us at random based on what ever they have at the time. Sometimes we get large amounts of one model, sometimes we get 100 different units and only 1 of each! if you want to give us a call say Monday afternoon or later next week we should be able to tell you exactly what is coming in our next shipment and find a good tablet for you at a nice low price :)

    • +1

lol? I dont see the logic/motivation to do that?

      • +2

Well this is Acers current "Hero Product" so they are advertising it everywhere and want it everywhere. Thus the facebook thing, the more times those words pop up on the internet the more spamming of the product Acer gets so they're happy. They did similar things for the Acer Iconias when they came out.

  • +2

    how is a $699 laptop a freebie?

    • +2

oh wow! didnt realise. fault corrected, thanks for pointing that out

  • +1

"July 2011 - Facebook reaches over 500 million active users"

    • +1

Not if buyers open a new FB account with no friends linked to it.Maybe you should say they need to have at least 20 friends.

      • +2

its not about the friends, its about the words appearing in as many places as possible. Acer have literally said to us for each post we can get on the product we will receive a reimbursement per unit, allowing us to do it cheaper. how many friends each person has is irrelevant, after all - it's a marketing campaign, not a friends competition. If it were a friends competition, my money is on Tom!

        • +2

I was joking because of your comment "FB reaching 500 million users"which doesn't seem to make any sense now.
          Who's Tom?

        • -3

lol, tom is the guy who made facebook. anyone who makes an account automatically has tom as a friend, thus why i bet he'd have the most friends :P

        • +5

Wrong social networking site dereko ;)
          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Anderson

        • +4

          Actually… Tom is from myspace
          Mark is from facebook

        • +3

Tom isn't the guy who made facebook, it's Mark Zuckerberg the dog friend! (Eduardo D:)
          Watch "The Social Network" :)

        • Acer have literally said to us for each post we can get on the product we will receive a reimbursement per unit

Wonder if most marketing campaigns involving "Like" in FaceBook, a recent phenomenon, are rewarded as kickbacks.

  • +1

so how much does it weigh?

    • +1

1.2KG's. It's also weight tuned, so typical laptops are usually heavier at the back (due to the battery), these machines have equal weight the whole way through making them easier to use on the go.

      • Does this weigh 1.2 or 1.4kg?

  • +1

how are you going to "verify" the post?

    • +1

we ask for your fb name and see if it's there on our wall.. quite simple, we always have our fb page logged in here so it only takes 30 seconds at worst to check.

  • +1

oh and how do we "apply" the discount? coupon code?

    • +3

LFO staff fix it up from our end :P you place the order and dont pay, we log in and work some magic, your order drops by $200. you pay and we ship it out! (or pick up in store)

    • +2

Just to extend on that, alot of customers are actually choosing to do the FB part in store when they collect the unit, which is also acceptable too :) only takes an extra 2 minutes while you're here and we do it together.

  • +2

Good deal for an Ultrabook, cheapest on SI is $799 and sharply rises after that.

It's an entry level Ultrabook and there will be waves of next gen ones coming out that promise to be even better, but if you need one now this looks like a good unit.

3-cell battery and only USB 2.0 are drawbacks for me personally, but unexpectedly it comes with a 2 year warranty (plus 1 if your CC provides it).

    • +1

Thanks for the praise cyssero! I also forgot we're giving out 2 years warranty (above specs were copied from acer website). I have changed the post now to mention the 2 years warranty.

I know the low USB ports is a bit upsetting, but as far as a ultrabook goes on todays market thats pretty good. acer is launching some new models late next month, should be interesting to see how they pull through features wise!

      • +1

No problem, credit where credit is due. The new models look even more appealing (especially ones announced at CES) but for someone who wants a decent Ultrabook now and not later this fits the bill quite well. CPU is quite reasonable despite only being clocked at 1.4GHz

        • +1

our techie has overclocked his to 1.8GHz, however only time will show how it handles the extra heat! its been going okay for the last 3 weeks and he uses it literally all day in the office.

  • +1

sorry for the questions, i have another one…

how long is the battery life? How much is it for an extended battery (6-cell maybe?) and how much for an extra battery?

    • +1

Ultrabook's should achieve at least 5 hours battery but can't be certain without seeing a review. The ULV CPU will help in this regard as will integrated graphics.

    • +1

thats cool. battery lasts up to 6 hours
can not be upgraded or replaced unfortunately as it's built in to the machine itself. Acer might offer this upgrade/replacement directly, but you'd need to chase that up with them if they do (I doubt it though).

      • +1

Apple seems to get away with it…and as long it lasts for a few years

  • +7

Thanks for answering all the queries and complaints rep! +1!

    • +5

Lol that's fine, thanks for noticing!

  • +2

So can you do the $200 off for a FB comment on the i7 Model W/ SSD @ $1199* as well? - for $999 I'd definitely be interested

    • +5

the deal is only for the i3 model. shoot me a quick email ([email protected]) and I will chat with Acer on Monday to see if they will let us do the same deal for the i7 model too. ill email you back the response when I get a final answer.

      • +1

        YGM

      • +1

yes. dont forget the i5 model too? may be a bigger discount cus they cost more? :D

  • +2

Sorry guys, but it's home time! expect no more responses until Monday 9AM. Enjoy your weekends! Any queries will be responded too when we open next.

  • +1

The 3 Cell Battery is the deal breaker here :|
But a very cheap ultrabook. (It's Acer though)
Good rep, good bargain, but the battery is disappointing.

Hey Dereko, just a quick question, is there an estimated date for Ivy Bridge laptops to come in?

    • +1

The Processor should give this laptop about 5-6 hours of battery life with a 3 cell battery though

      • +1

According to several reviews, the battery will last 2.5~3.0 hours on average when CPU is at load (i.e. video playback).

Officework — expect about 6 hours thanks to the low CPU wattage and the chipset's low power draw.

  • -5

hmm how heavy is this thing?

  • LFO, do you know if this Aspire S3 has an mSATA slot? My google-fu tells me that the S3 doesn't have one, but I'd like to know from a more knowleadgeable source.

  • Already bought macbook air 11" for $999 :( would have considered this ultrabook. good deal +1

upgrade to 128GB!! SSD for only $129 more! I don't care what you called ultra bla bla. But if that 20gb ssd can called ultrabook, then this one with 128SSD can called SUPPER ULTRABOOK…at CHEAPER price… and better build(in my opinion)…and FREE bluetooth mouse(with $1 tips)…and FREE sleeve case(another $1 tips)…and double battery life…and…what else you want?!

you want something really good value? take the i5 cpu, 128ssd, 2x2 wifi and 64bit win7 upgrade, take both $1 packs. All at only $628.20… now we can call this SUPER+ ULTRABOOK.

believe me you will love this SUPER+ ULTRABOOK with 4GB ram upgrade (don't do it from lenovo, $49 is too much).

I know Lenovo is 1 year warranty compare with Acer's 2yrs.

btw that office deal and bluetooth upgrade is good price if needed.

    • +1

Just found out that Lenovo have the ThinkPad Edge E320 - Performance model as well, have 6gb with everything else for $679, take the 2x2 wifi upgrade make it only $689. cheaper and faster…much faster!

really want to get me one as well, is looking at the samsung tablet which is $1500+, this one disallow you touch it's screen but half price!

just not really like that 128gb ssd, it probably kingston or intel made, can be much slower than my corsair 60gb sata3.

      • Why do you need sata3 ssd on a sata2 laptop?

      • Go play with one of the ultrabooks on display at JB or DSE

You'll know why they charge such a high premium on the S3 — the build quality, materials, and the thinness of the machine beats the E320 hands down.

I know because I own an E320 and this notebook, which I agree has pretty good specs for the price, has a fairly mediocre construction and on WP there is discussion on the somewhat average build quality of the lid, screen and hinge.

    • The E320 deal is good in its own right but isn't in the same category as these Ultrabooks. It's a good buy but it is heavier and thicker. Of course it's also cheaper and more powerful too, but Ultrabooks are not meant to compete directly with this.

Something like this is ideal for Uni or for those who travel a lot.

    • That's not an ultrabook though.

  • +1

Hi guys. Just thought that I would post this info about LFO so that you are aware this when deciding on a purchase.

In October 2011 they had to pay $50,000 to micrsoft due to the fact that they were using second hand COA's (windows license stickers) on laptops that they were selling.

    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/aupiracy/archive/2011/10/25/50-000-l…

I'm not judging or neg-ing the deal and I'm sure that they have probably stopped doing such things - just thought that you might be interested in the info.

    • +3

Scotty posted this before but I think this issue affected desktops, not laptops.

Laptops are pre-loaded and imaged with Windows as soon as they leave the Acer distribution centers — LFO does not load the software.

      • Fair enough. Thanks for the update. For me personally it would make me think twice about dealing with LFO but that's just me. I'm sure that there are many who have had trouble free dealings with them

    • +1

Ah, all the laptops use OEM SLP keys anyway pre-activated [via OEM Cert on the factory-installed image of windows + SLIC table in the bios] when they come out of the factory, even if they're using second hand COA's, it shouldn't actually affect you.

  • +1

I have to say - JB Hifi have 10% off all notebooks right now.

There is an Asus ultrabook i3 with a 128gb SSD which has been reduced to $996 and a further 10% off takes it down to $896.4

    • Asus +1
Toshiba's. - The fan is clearly visible underneath.
Acer's whole thing is so plastic and cheap

    • I wanted Acer s3 but the Asus is in a different league aesthetically. The tech performance and battery life is also significantly better in performance reviews.

Having said that, the Acer looks a lot better than any of the old 13 inch laptops, excluding MacBook Air, ever did.

This is a great price for the entry model, but I was happy to pay a bit more and bought 2 Zenbooks for the office.

  • After a quick search, seems like this is the cheapest Acer S3 Ultrabook. I am definitely recommending this to my friend who is starting uni in March. She would love to fit something faster than a netbook in her small bag.

  • Can you please give me the full model number for the i7 Model W/ SSD - $1199*? Also, I see on your website that that price is after cash back, can you please give a link to the terms and conditions?

  • temping but i'm holding on until they mark it around $400 price, true ozbargain deal :D

  • +1

The good features of an ultrabook is that they are very light, and yet very fast because they have a full SSD and decent CPU. This model is cheap because it does not have a full SSD. ie. this is just a light notebook/netbook, not an ultrabook. The weight is also barely under the 1.4kg limit (1.38kg). Acer are stretching the rules, perhaps because Intel allowed it with their lax definition, but $699 is about where this laptop really should be in price terms. Compare it with Toshiba's 1.1kg and full SSD z830 and you'll see why real Ultrabooks cost more.

  • +2

The lack of USB 3.0 on this ultrabook is the killer. not future proofed. and USB 3.0 has been around for a while now. dont know what Acer was thinking.

    • i think they didn't put usb 3.0 because they couldn't/wouldn't include it at this price point, you realise they have other models they want to upsell to you!?
but there is a possible technical reason why they didn't include usb 3.0, just a theory, usb 3.0 needs to provide more power compared to usb 2.0, off the top of my head i think it's 900ma vs 500ma, and because the S3 only has a fixed internal 3 cell battery it would noticeably affect battery runtime, mind you i have used the odd laptop where the usb port was underpowered(which is why i said possible reason), if they made it a little thicker and put in a 6 cell battery (my preference) it would have been no problem, these ultrabooks are neat but the sharp edges can give me blisters on my hands!

      • well none of their ultrabooks have a USB 3.0 so im not sure what else they want to upsell me. when im looking for ultrabooks and want a USB 3.0 and none of their ultrabooks have a USB 3.0, guess what i do? i go and buy a ASUS or samsung ultrabook. so i guess it was partly overlooked.

As for battery, thats another fail from Acer. ASUS did a much better job there too.

  • +4

Online have it for $699 + free shipping without conditions like Facebook
    http://www.onlinecomputer.com.au/product_info.php?products_i…

    • Hi Shole, as you may have been aware this would have been made to compete with us a day ago, their previous prices they advertised were higher a day ago, and in addition all their other Aspire s3 models are steeper in price.

In saying that LFO is the first store in Australia Wide to launch such a Promotion on Price proving to the End User that we are always the first ones to deliver on Price and Service !

      • ok now how about specials on the higher moder Acer models and may be the zenbooks too? :D
        Something similar to this special

        • in the ultrabook range or normal laptops?

        • Ultrabook range please.

        • Ultrabook range

        • np guys, this model is also on special (mentioned in the above post).
          http://www.lfo.com.au/index.php?page=shop.product_details&fl…

Check it out, let me know your thoughts!

        • -1

dereko, did you just increase the price of the i7 version? On the weekend it was shown as $1199 after cashback (like you wrote in the original post). Now it comes up as $1399 after cashback. What happened?

I fear I have to neg this deal now, since I feel someone is pulling my leg. Plus: I had some questions above and never got an answer.

        • +1

          Hi team teri,

The price of $1199 after cashback is an exclusive price offered to OzBargain only. If you wish to buy one for this price, I will sell you one - but only through OzBargain as it is an exclusive deal for all of our fans on here :) Please remove your neg as it is incorrect, but understandable due to the circumstances. If you would like to order one, feel free to submit your order via email to "[email protected]" with the subject header as "OzBargain Deal" and we can arrange an order for you immediately.

As for your answers, sorry if you were missed, from Saturday 5:30PM until Monday 9:00AM we were not responding to OzBargain as we were closed, we returned to an extra 32 +'s and 40+ comments which came through during this time. I did try my best to answer all questions, however if yours was missed repost it and I will answer now or you can submit it via email. Sorry for missing you, but this post has almost gone viral so it's hard to maintain the 100% attendance it had when we first posted it!

        • ^Ah, a classic case of "it's on special! Oops we forgot to list the undiscounted price"^

        • Guys - give him a break - like he said he'll honour the $1199 price on the i7 for OzBargainers - what more do you want - we all know another $200 off the $1199 would have been an extreme bargain!

Which is what he offered orginally in his post
          "i7 Model W/ SSD - $1199*"

          and like he said
"Happen to see it cheaper? LFO Will Beat It!"

I seriously doubt you will find the S3 i7 cheaper than that anywhere…anyone found it?

        • @bodogbodog
I work in retail, never said anything negative about dereko, it's just sometimes retailers will forget to put the original price up, and only have the sale price on, which people will think it's the normal price, then scream "deceptive" when we put the "savings" and "down from _____" price tag on.

          Read below.
V- Previous price before rep came back on OzBargain was definately $1199 after $99 cashback (saturday) - V

        • @dereko & Bodogbodog
On Friday & Saturday the price for the i7 model was $1199 after cashback on the LFO website. No strings, no conditions, available to everyone who looked at that product.

Then derko wrote here "the deal is only for the i3 model. shoot me a quick email ([email protected]) and I will chat with Acer on Monday to see if they will let us do the same deal for the i7 model too. ill email you back the response when I get a final answer."

Now the price is $1399 after cashback with $200 off for ozbargainers - I assume under the same conditions as the original post, like them on Facebook, etc. In my view the deal for the i7 model got worse today, same final price as on Friday, but now strings are attached.

At the same time the rep pushed it in this thread, just a couple of posts up. That kind of gave the impression that they were now doing the same deal for the i7 that they initially did for the i3…

Never mind, after reading plenty of reviews I decided against the Acer. The questions about model number and T&C for cashback are no longer important for me.
