iPhone and Android Phone, Which Do You Prefer?

I have used 4 or 5 Android phones before moving to iPhone (a birthday gift). I have not looked back since then.

Yesterday I saw Telegram founder Durov's comments on iPhone:

Every time I have to use an iPhone to test our iOS app I feel like I’m thrown back into the Middle Ages. The iPhone’s 60Hz displays can’t compete with the 120Hz displays of modern Android phones that support much smoother animations.

The worst part of Apple’s tech though is not clunkier devices or outdated hardware. Owning an iPhone makes you a digital slave of Apple – you are only allowed to use apps that Apple lets you install via their App Store, and you can only use Apple’s iCloud to natively back up your data.

I am wondering how people out there perceive about iPhone especially from those who have used both iPhone and Android.

    iPhone

I used to be Android users when I was younger, but then I can't keep up with all the new Tech and settings. So I changed to iPhone. I think it is easier to use at a high price tag. Easier to sell though. Also more predictable price, it is unlikely you find it much cheaper within months. Basically easier for old people.

    • +5

There is only one solution, bring back Windows Phone :(

  • +36

iPhone is all about the great user experience, iMessages, the privacy focus and positive environmental impact.

If you're looking for specs or that UX doesn't suit you, you're in the wrong place.

Everyone has their own preference and that's GOOD for competition (see latest Android 12 features copied from iOS and vice versa over the years).

    • +10

Not sure why people negged, when OP asked for personal preference.

Could be invalidating some people’s mindset if the outside world don’t conform to their same beliefs…

        • +47

Why would people be jealous of iPhone owners?

        • +4

Not everyone can afford a $$$$$ phone. Some people spend less than $100 on phones.

          • +1

            @[Deactivated]:

OP: 120Hz displays of modern Android phones
Some people spend less than $100 on phones.

            🤔

            • +6

@SF3: The most I've spent on a phone was $69. You're combining two lines that I've never argued for. For my budget, android has practically been the only choice.

              • +2

@[Deactivated]: That’s fair enough, as your budget sets the boundaries for the available options.

I guess OP’s point was, if one is paying same $ for flagship models, what are people’s personal preferences.

                • +9

                  @SF3:

                  what are people’s personal preferences.

Why you do this OP. This isn't going to end well.

Either way, whether you get a flagship model from Apple, Samsung, etc they are all notch. All great phones.

I only really came here to counter Hybroid's claim on Apple's positive environmental impact. That itself is simply not true.

Yes, it's not just Apple. But they sure aren't helping! Contrary to Hybroid's claim!

Apple, HP, and Honeywell are lobbying against a bill in the Nevada statehouse that would require electronic hardware manufacturers to provide device schematics, device parts, and instructions to third-party repair shops for device repairs, according to the Associated Press.

        • +5

Jealous lol, whenever someone hands me an iPhone I dread the sluggish feeling I get using it. It's like all the animations and response times are half the speed of my Pixel.

          • -3

@Jai: lmao I love what Android users tell themselves. Yeah, mate. Sure. What were you handed, a still working iPhone 4?

            • +3

@ThithLord: Nah, it was a 12, I buy iPhones as gifts for family but wouldn't be caught dead owning one myself.

        • +3

What is there to be jealous of exactly? You sound like someone who's never tried anything but Apple.

Pretty much anyone with an income, even a modest one, can afford an iphone new or on a plan. Its not like expensive cars where cost rules most average people out of owning them. And android flagships are just as expensive anyway. The argument about iphones being somehow exclusive is a good decade out of date, and even then wasn't valid.

iphones are decent and well made. In my view (I've owned both) they don't live up to the hype. They are easy to use for people who can't be bothered to learn techy things. My wife is a perfect example, just wants things to work and isn't interested in working out a solution if they don't. She uses iphone (still complains about it though…), I prefer android as I've done the Apple thing and found it to be vastly overrated.

      positive environmental impact.

This is the best lie I have heard to date.

Apple does not give a **** about the environment.

They are strongly against right to REPAIR. Imposing software locks to prevent independent technicians from repairing devices. With little to no competition, more devices will end up in land fill due to Apple's expensive repairs costs.

Your comment is baseless. Is that because they removed the charger? Well so has Samsung.

        • +6

Take that to Samsung. I'm not Samsung and I have no preference on phone brands.

            • +3

@GrueHunter: There's always someone who's triggered over a phone debate. Apple Karen?

        • +1

This comment somewhat overlooks the many features that appeared on Samsung and other android phones before being included in Apple devices.

        • +1

They can do that when they charge so much off their phones.

          • -1

@Duckie2hh: bahahaha I love how quickly you haters pivot and move the galposts.

            Nice try, brah

Earlier this year, Apple filed a lawsuit against GEEP Canada, a recycler it had hired to destroy and recycle old devices. Rather than do the contracted job, Apple says, GEEP employees determined that many of these devices were still perfectly usable, and diverted at least 1,00,000 for resale. After an investigation, Apple found that many of the lost phones were being used in China — presumably still in “good shape.”

          Super environmentally friendly there…

        • They can claim carbon neutrality all they want. (they're buying carbon credits to offset anything else because of the exorbitant prices they charge.

As long as they're not supporting the right to repair they can't claim they're looking after the environment. Effectively designing redundancy (and fighting to keep it) into their phones

      • -1

Some light reading: https://www.apple.com/environment/pdf/Apple_Environmental_Pr… . Show me an Android tech company more committed.

      • +2

        This a thousand times over.
Sure most tech companies are similar, but with how hard Apple push consumers to buy their next big product every single year, while at the same time restricting users repairing their devices from often very simple repairs that can otherwise make the device unusable, the "environmentally friendly" company that they try to make themselves to be just doesn't line up.

    • +30

ICloud backups are not encrypted and even Android fully encrypt their cloud backups.
IMessage does not have forward secrecy or future secrecy.
There are no cryptographic constraints preventing Apple from adding a key to your account so they would read your messages.

Google supported RCS which is a pile of shit and unencrypted.

I can let trillion-dollar corporations do their own pr, if you think they are good companies and privacy focused or environmentally savvy you are deluded.

Apple gave up all their Chinese users in a heartbeat in the name of capitalism.

Use Signal and support right to repair. I don't give a shit what operating system you use. Support Freedom.

      • +3

Don't worry. We are all too jealous of Hybroid's iPhone. We are all sheep.

But for real. Hybroid spewed out lines of baseless claims. And for him/her to call us sheep. That takes it to the next level. Pfft.

      • +2

Incorrect, iCloud backups are encrypted, where do you even get your information from?

        • -2

They're not end-to-end encrypted, basically. Still encrypted. Android users have points when they get to make up the facts, LMAO

      • Messages are encrypted lol.
Where are you getting the rest of your nonsense from?

    • +15

I have an iPhone for work and comparatively the user UI is just horrible. I find the level of intuition and consistency throughout extremely lacking. Even simple things like the dialler which is a great example, why are there 5 tabs? If I start typing it should also search through my phonebook to consolidate Dialer/Contacts/Search? The back button is at the top left forcing me to use my other hand. If I search and make a call then go back into the dialler why is it still on the last contact search - that activity is finished.

Every additional action is wasted time, every time I can't completed something one handed with my thumb is a wasted opportunity to improve the OS.

It's as if no one has ever sat down and critically looks at the UI and said "How can we create some consistency and make this better?"

    • +5

Positive environmental impact? So that's why they are still using their lightening cable? lulz??

      • Their first gen phones with fast chargers didn't ship with them either. They used the excuse that it is more environmentally friendly to use your old charger (true), however you now had a feature you couldn't use and you had to pay extra for, and if you did by the charger significant emissions were created on the extra waste caused by shipping.

        • +4

Sure sure sure get all that. But why not use a standard USB-C cable which is a cable used basically by everyone else for modern devices? The whole issue I'm talking about is yeah nice way to talk about being environmentally friendly but we really need to see it from a wider angle. If Apple really cared about the environment over profits then they would have shifted to a USB-C interface a while ago. I would consider most of the modern Android manufacturers more environmentally friendly than Apple by a mile based on the interface alone cause it's pretty clear profits > environment. This is my opinion anyways not saying you or others are wrong.

          • @JungliChilli: Cant you see? Apple is preventing petrochemicals from being turned into a gas and going into the atmosphere, instead they're being used for proprietary adaptors and dongles and accessories which will go into landfill, CLEARLY much better.

            • @meatgasm: And they couldn't do that if they used a USB C interface? Think and look further…. Apply what you've said minus proprietary interface/adaptors, substitute a commonly used interface ie USB-C and what do you have? Interoperable accessories! This is clearly much much better. Like I said profits > environmental for Apple. Any justification about being 'environmentally friendly' is just a deflection in my opinion until they switch to USB-C or whatever is the common interface type whenever they decide to change. Most people would just listen to them and be like omg these guys are amazing. But not me, not falling for that BS =D

    • +2

Apple really can't play the environmental card with their stance on right to repair etc.

    • -1

iPhone has been faster than Android for years. If you care about specs then iPhone is usually the best choice.

      • -1

Not sure why the neg, apples silicon is top notch.

  • +112

    This will turn ugly.

I'll start…. I Can't stand Apple products and the fact you are locked to their whole regime.

    • Aren’t you either locked into Apple or Android?

      • There are at least a dozen Android app stores, not just Google Play, and you can side load apps as well.

        There's one Apple app store.

        • +10

Explain what your are comparing with? I hope its not a $100 Android vs a $2000 iPhone lol…

How long is long in your opinion?

          • +2

@JungliChilli: I have a 10 Year Old Android that still works.

Than explain why an android phone lasts no where near as long as an iPhone?

This is the best I've heard to date! Android is only a software. So…

    • +1

iPhone is a product yes. Android is an OS.
      What are we comparing here?

      • Don't think many iPhone users know the difference =D

      • When people are talking iPhone vs Android it is generally exclusively about phones.

I mean, if you really want to bring Android Tablets into the conversation be my guest, but that's not a conversation that's going to go well (for Android), in my opinion.

  • +16

iPhone hassle free user experience, let's face it 99% of consumers use but 10% of a device's capabilities, the rest is just waffle IMO.

    • +4

What 'hassle' is there for someone buying a decent Android phone?

I honestly feel like people just parrot marketing concepts that bear no relationship to reality. I have a Pixel and cannot imagine how it could be any simpler to use.

      • +9

A lot of Apple devotees have never owned anything else, so have zero experience of android and how it has vastly improved since the very early days when IOS was better (I'm talking pre iphone 5 at the very latest). You're not in a position to comment on android if all you've done is upgrade to a new iphone every year or two.

I've seen really dumb comments from several people on Apple forums about when iphone cameras are playing up (my wife's iphone 11 camera was having problems so I was looking for answers - it eventually had to be replaced by Apple) like "the photos look like Android photos". Given that the best cameras available in phones are largely in Android devices (Pixel, Samsung, Huawei etc), and have been for some time, this is just uninformed dribble by people with no subject knowledge.

Android these days is very much hassle free and easy to use, its no more difficult to use than IOS and far more customiseable. My wife and kids use iphones and I've had them in the past. I just don't see why they are worth what they cost. I have a similar view on all "flagships" and the comment above about people using 10% of a phone's capabilities surely supports high end devices, including iphones, being a waste of money.

The biggest thing for me with android is choice. Choice of brand, choice of design and choice of price range. You still have high end flagships but can also get very well made and capable android phones for under $400. Apple does not offer this.

        • iPhones are just another choice. The whole concept of it being one market vs another is wrong. IMO.

Yes, from time to time, different phones these days have claim to 'best camera'. However, iPhone, is usually always in that conversation, particularly with video but usually stills as well.

I think to a lot of regular users, choice is off putting. They dont want to think so much about their phone or their next phone. I genuinely believe lots of apple users would be happy on android, and vice versa, but there really is not a compelling reason for a non-enthusiast to switch. Unless you feel very strongly about privacy (and also believe one gives you that over the other) or app lock in (which i doubt few non-enthusiasts do).

its no more difficult to use than IOS and far more customiseable

I think this is actually why (some) people find them harder to use.

Ultimately, when it comes to why people prefer iphones. I generally think when you remove what people are used to, when you remove their own perceptions of brand and reliability (lots of people have had iphones and have had great reliability out of them, so they see no reason to switch, the number of iphone 6 and 6s i see people still using is insane), then i think you are left with primarily the fact that the iPhones are great all rounder phones. Great cameras, displays, performance, and design. Now, when you compare against android, you get a bit drowned in that sea of choice, and you'll ask someone for advice and they'll go well if you care about the camera get this pixel/sony/whatever, or if you care about screen get this samsung just remember to get the one with the good processor or whatever. That's great if you really care about a few of those things, and not others.

Apple has also improved the line up of offering, by 1) selling previous years models at lower price points and 2) splitting the regular and pro lines when the regular line has pretty much every feature a person could want. I mean, its incredibly hard i think to justify a pro given the value of the regular, yet lots of people do.

    Android.

    I've had a 3, 5(?) and a few 6's and haven't liked them. I've had a few Android phones and prefer them.

    3.5mm Jack

    • +29

      Poor Jack. That's so tiny.

      • The smaller Price Jack is, the better

    • +1

I have bluetooth headphones but having the 3.5mm jack is still so nice if I need it in a pinch, shame its becoming harder to find a phone with one even on the android side.

  • +10

I use both phones. For work iPhone and for personal Android is a lot better.

    • +1

Can you elaborate on why you like Android for personal phones better?

I’ve only ever used iPhones but did use a Samsung phone for a bit, didn’t really like Android compared to iPhone.

I only really use my phone for email, photos, browsing the web, YouTube, some light gaming, as a result of that I don’t really find any issue with using an iPhone.

      • If the only Android phone you've ever used is a Samsung then you haven't really used Android at all. Samsung is bottom tier with their terrible customisations and locking down of the system.

I guess it stems from being deep within the Google ecosystem already in terms of apps, Google accounts, YouTube etc. Having a lot of flexibility in what services I use without having to be locked down in the Apple ecosystem.

        • While i do agree android is inarguably a more open platform. The juxtaposition of you making that argument immediately following your statement about being deep in the google ecosystem, i think does show some of the limits. Sure you can use an android phone and go light on google services, but is it a good experience then?

Personally, I dont really trust google with my data any more.

          • @modiika: You don't have to be deep within the Google services if you don't want to. You have the flexibility of using others.

            • @Clear: I think I acknowledged that. But I guess my question was, if you do that on android, does that undermine a lot of the useability and seemlessness? Perhaps not on a Samsung, given they seem to duplicate every google/app?

              • @modiika: It depends how far you want to go. Many people just have an account for the Play Store and use no other Google related apps. You have the flexibility of having a different browser, email app, search engine, phone dialer, sms app and more. You can even install an alternative app store.

Root your phone and you can blow away Google or install a custom ROM. Alternatively you can buy many of the phones that don't come with Google.

        • I can't see how anyone is happy to pay top Samsung dollars for that absolutely disgusting user interface. I am a pixel guy and thought I'd like to change to a premium hardware device, testing Samsung devices made it very clear I could never buy one, I'd rather jump to an iPhone

          • @billdsl: Samsung is the Boeing 737 Max of Android phones.

I use OnePlus myself and OxygenOS is close to stock with a lot of enhancements.

      • +1

        Budget.

A clean stock android OS that is well optimized can be very nice.

    • +2

      100%

I'd never buy an iPhone for personal use, it's too restrictive on me as an individual, to be able to do what I want to do.

But iPhone for work is fine - I'm already restricted by my employment - I'm only meant to use my work phone for work, so I can set up my iPhone with my work apps and just use them, and happily mess around with my Android and customise it however I want.

      • +2

Lots of people on here talk about being able to customize and not being locked down. I think it would be helpful to know some examples of what you do regularly or need to customise that you cant on IOS.

        • +1

Load and install external apps, use a usb to directly transfer files on the move

          • @kawinuyo: what are external apps? I assume you mean non-app store apps. I guess what i want to know is what sort of apps do you need you cant get in the app store?

Pretty sure you can do direct file transfers now on ios. You certainly can on ipad. That being said, I cant think of a single time i've needed to do that with my phone.

            • @modiika: Sometimes I would download an older apk of an app if I thought the update had broken the app. I had a manga reading app that wasn't on the play store either!

It has been a little while since I used an iphone so if they have changed the direct file transfers into the phone that's great! More flexibility is always appreciated. Hubby has an iPhone for work and I don't think he has been able to use the usb though.

              • @kawinuyo: pretty much the main thing i miss, is not having the myki pass on the phone, like you can have on android.

Android is infinitely better for doing cool tech things with, but iOS is the best to use for people who want as little to control as possible.

    • +2

Can you elaborate on the cool “tech” things you can do with Android?

      • +1

Not sure if this qualifies but one of the best ways of using YouTube on Android is through the NewPipe app which gives you a fairly seamless, ad-free, account-free and tracker-free (with a VPN) experience. It works by scraping the YouTube service which is almost certainly against both the terms of service for both the App Store and Google Play. (The scraping does break occasionally which is why I said "fairly seamless" but the developers are almost always quick to fix it.) Luckily, Android users can sideload the F-Droid app store which doesn't follow any such terms which is where you can get NewPipe. All apps in F-Droid are built from source so you can be confident that they do as the developers claim.

Whenever I'm in the presence of a friend watching something on YouTube on their iPhone, I'm just groaning about how they put up with the constant ads on a daily basis.
